  1. Really good, but they have a limited selection of flavors and the shop is small.  We stopped in on National Ice Cream Day. I really liked the Earl Grey, while my husband enjoyed the spicy Strawberry Chipotle.

Good place to go when you're walking around Hamilton Park.

  2. I had a good experience here. Very friendly staff, lots of options to taste!, nice-clean place.

I tried a bunch of the flavors, but ultimately the wifey went with the earl grey fudge (which was my favorite), shiso mint (very fresh tasting), and fruity pebbles (which literally tasted like fruity pebbles, so was just eh).

I got the salted caramel sandwich between two snickerdoodles. flavors were good but it was only one scoop of ice cream….should have been 2.

Prices are too expensive for me ($6 for 2 cookies and a scoop) but are what they are for organic/trendy-type places.

  3. I love the ice cream at milk sugar love! Perfect name for the business that makes ice cream with all those ingredients. They use all grass fed, organic milk, which gives the quality a step up from other ice creams. It is incredibly creamy and rich.

The flavors also stand out from other places. While they may not have as many choices as standard ice cream parlors, they make up for it with an interesting selection of unusual flavors as well as rotating flavors. In my most recent visit I ordered the ricotta pistachio. It was so delicious! I also tasted the Thai iced tea which was very good as well!

I like the option to have soft serve or hard ice cream and the soft serve flavors rotate too. The other cool thing about this place is the create your own ice cream sandwich option. I first came here thanks to the Yelp gets schooled event a while back and was able to try a few of the sandwiches. I really liked the brownie sandwich.

Unfortunately the cost of the ice cream doesn't quite match the portion size. I wish you could get a little more for your money's worth. The regular is probably a good deal as you do get 2 scoops for about 4.50.

  4. What a discovery! I want to pat myself on the back for finding this sweet spot. It's a small shop that actually makes their own ice cream in house with such amazingly unique flavors for a very reasonably price. Two 3 scoops of ice cream came out to 11.50. I can't remember all but the honey lavender and he nutella are the ones I could remember. There was also something like dominican birthday cake or something. Really good. I wish I lived closer so I could try all the flavors here. I must've tried about five samples before coming down to a decision so I very much thank the friendly staff here.

  5. The shop gets kudos for making everything in house. Homemade is always better.

This was my first time here so of course I had to buy a plethora of items. I ordered the Snickerdoodle and Salted Caramel ice cream with waffle toppings and let's just say, I was tempted to go back and order another if my waist wasn't going to pay for it. The Snickerdoodle was absolutely delicious especially with the pieces of cake inside. Nice touch. The SC was literally the best ice cream I've ever had in my life. It was soft, creamy and filled with flavor. I can't wait to have more.

My boyfriend ordered the Salted Caramel and Brown Sugar Oatmeal which was outstanding! Nice texture in the latter. The birthday cone was a nice combo too.

I enjoy the small scoops which allows you to enjoy the ice cream without making you feel dumpy. I love that you can make your own ice cream sandwich which I learned all too late.

To go, I purchased a pint of the Dominican Cake which I will admit tastes good, despite not really liking almond extract but will have it be known that this does not tastes anything like Dominican Cake which was a disappointment.

In any case, MSL I will be back soon.

Side note: I forgot to mention, that I had tried their macaroon ice cream sandwich some time ago at a friend's home and this was the reason why I was lured here.

  6. Come here for the Earl Grey Fudge!! It's one of the five permanent flavors on the menu while the others rotate. (Really wanted to try their coffee but they didn't have 🙁 )The Lemon Olive Oil is good too, but could be an acquired taste. I think the other flavors are really sweet, though they are spot on. Like the snickerdoodle seriously tastes like the cookie. And don't get the blueberry crumble if you don't like blueberries lol

    Pints are $10
    Small cakes are $40
    Minimum cc charge of $10

The specialty cones are pretty, and I'm pretty sure they're the same as Ice & Vice (Don't quote me, not sure. They just look the same). But honestly the flavor of the cones just don't come through. Especially since all the MSL flavors are so strong independently. If you do get a specialty cone, just do it for the gram haha

  7. After moving to JC, I've decided to get acquainted with the ice cream/gelato places in the new 'hood. I am extremely fond of ice cream, and after saying goodbye to my beloved Il Laboratorio del Gelato, I was desperately in need to find a replacement.  I have tried four places in the area thus far, and instead of reviewing them individually, I thought it would be useful to compare them against each other.

I have listed them by preference, starting with my favorite:

Bucket & Bay Craft Gelato – I've visited this place the most, and is the one that I generally take visiting friends to. As I mentioned above, Il Laboratorio del Gelato was my favorite place in the city, thus, I am fairly biased toward a artisanal gelato place. Bucket & Bay has the most unique flavors and my absolute favorite is Purple Sticky Rice.  However, even just the simple vanilla is amazing.  Also, you have to try it with the homemade waffle cones, they are the best waffle cones I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. There are usually new flavors every few weeks and I always make an effort to try them. To be fair, I am not a huge fan of the alcohol infused flavors, but that's just because I prefer to drink my alcohol instead of eating them. Lastly, the service here is always friendly and helpful.  The only downside is that it is fairly pricey for gelato, but given the fact that they make everything in-house and the freshness of the ingredients, it's worth the splurge.

Downtown Yogurt – my second favorite place and the only one that charges by weight. This is where I go when I want variety, I love the fact that I can mix and match as many flavors as I want, and the toppings here are so delicious. My favorite flavors are pineapple, strawberry shortcake and salted caramel pretzel. As for the toppings, you have to try the cheesecake bites, they are insanely delicious.

Torico Ice Cream – I love the vast amount of flavors at this place, there are usually more than 30 flavors (I think) each day, which is staggering. Also, I love the fact that they have interesting exotic flavors that you rarely see elsewhere, such as jackfruit and mamey. I personally like lychee and ginger. However, I prefer the gelato/frozen yogurt from the two places mentioned above. Also, there is generally a long line here and the service could be slow, which is understandable given the amount of ice cream being offered here. I once waited more than 20 minutes here as the people in front of me were trying numerous flavors, or ordering milk shakes, which could take awhile.  I think this would be the place for you if you are looking for good old fashioned ice cream.

Milk Sugar Love – I have to preface the review of this place by stating that I've only been here once, in comparison to 20+ times at Bucket & Bay or 5 times at Torico, so take what I say with a grain of salt. The reason why I only came once is that I personally felt the ice cream here is too sweet. I've tried earl grey fudge and Thai tea in a waffle cone, as well as a chocolate chip ice cream sandwich. I thought they were all too sweet and waffle cone wasn't as tasty as the ones from Bucket & Bay. The service here is great, the woman behind the counter was helpful  in making recommendations.

  8. Downtown Jersey City isn't lacking in quality options for fancy frozen treats (Torico, Bucket & Bay, Gia) and, like those others, Milk Sugar Love offers many delicious (if not cheap) scoopables.

A clean, sleek, and minimalist storefront offers a rotating selection of a dozen gourmet flavours in cone, cup, or as part of an upscale ice cream sandwiches. Cakes, cookies, and coffee are also available but ice cream is the star.

You probably won't go wrong with anything you choose: I went with a scoop each of salted caramel and lemon olive oil in a cup. $4.65 is a bit pricey, but well worth it. The caramel was just salty enough to balance out the sweetness and provided a perfect foil to the earthy tartness of the lemon.

Grab yourself some scoops for a nice evening stroll around Hamilton Park.
