Amazing vibes! The atmosphere is relaxed, inviting, and super fun. Drinks are delicious. I give it 4 instead of 5 stars just because drinks are a bit pricey and it can get crowded. Regardless, I think you have to check this place out before you leave New York 🙂
Wow – I literally am still stuffed almost two hours later. I just got home and couldn't wait to write this review.
First, I've been meaning to come here for awhile and was delayed because I was still in the military and between all my traveling and things, I just simply couldn't, and I'm so happy – the wait was worth it! When I first walked in, I was worried, because I literally was the only one there (until a man walked in with his friend a few mins later). My sever was Marcella. who was a Brazilian native and was able to answer every question I've had and described the meals with such passion. She provided great service and definitely recommended some awesome dishes. I came hungry.
Appetizer: Large Shrimp Salad that was just wonderful. It had a garlicky dressing on it that wasn't too overbearing – but enough. I had that with a margarita on the rocks. The Margarita was definitely good and it was used with real lime – not that nasty lime juice that you find in a lot of margaritas nowadays.
Entrée: Picanha fatiada acebolada. This dish was awesome. It was Steak (that was cut up in slices, some of the pieces with cubed-shaped, but most, were thin cut) with French fries and this small plate called farofa (this amazing treat was all about texture – as Marcella describes, and was definitely right). It was like a powder, but had pieces of bacon in it. Sounds weird, but hearing bacon in it is what sold it. It was awesome, too.
Dessert: I was almost stuffed at this point but was feeling adventurous. I didn't want to order a dessert and not know how big it would come (did I forget to mention that Miss Favela is NOT cheap with her meal portions? They were very generous). So, I was interested in the Sorvete de queijo com dulce de leite – a cheesy ice cream sorbet blessing. Marcella offered me a sample after noticing my hesitation (again, afraid of plate size) and im glad she did. It was to die for. Although, that sample is what filled the rest of me up – I will be sure to get it when I return.
Besides my Maragarita, I tried out a strawberry caipirinha that was made by the beautiful bartender, Kiki. It was definitely made to perfection. It was sweet and very inviting.
I will return again, and probably check out how service is on the weekends. I hear they have live bands playing! Thank you Marcella and Kiki for taking great care of me:)
Trendy, hipster spot that has amazing tapas that are on the pricey side ($6 for rice and $6 for black beans!) You can find better offers on cocktails and cervezas in the area but the food keeps you here. The venue is well-worn like a typical Brazilian street-side restaurant you stumble upon in all of Brasil. Note: They charge $1 more on all drinks served while the band is performing.
Seeking out authentic, home style cuisine bought me here on a random summer night. With no reservation and a party of 3 we did have approx a 20 minute wait. Once seated though we ordered right away as we had time to overlook the menu and it was out of the kitchen pretty quickly.
For the table to share we ordered several different tapas:
Franco a Passarinho- Chicken lightly fried and sautéed in garlic
Pao de Queijo- cheese bread
Bolinho de Bacalhou- Codfish croquettes
Calabresa com Mandioca-Brazilian pork sausage sautéed with onions and yucca
2 sides of rice and one side of beans @ $6/piece.
The food was really good, flavorful, well seasoned, all the above and I really have no complaints about the prices except for the side of rice and beans. You pay $6 for the rice and $6 for the beans and the serving size is barely enough for 2 people. Robbery if you ask me.
Great authentic food and ambiance however the serving size can be bigger for the price.
I love Miss Favela. Though I know the food is just ok, this is such a great place to go for drinks with friends and to hang out when the weather is nice. I love their concept and how true it is to the owner's vision, she does a great job making you feel like you're at a homecooking-style casual spot IN Brazil. I've been lucky to have had many great meals at Brazilian restaurants so I'm sad to say Miss Favela's food leaves something to be desired…while the menu items are authentic, the flavors and seasoning are not..I think it's watered down to accommodate the over saturated location and hipster clientele. You don't leave there with mouthwatering memories of your drowning-in-garlic-and-onions steak, which is what SHOULD happen when you eat Brazilian food. Brazilians usually go to Queens for their fix. Most times I've been there just for drinks. Once, recently, had dinner and we had a about 4 items on the menu which were all just OK — a little annoying since we are paying double what we would pay for better tasting Brazilian food in Astoria. However, we're paying for the atmosphere and the enjoyment so I just go with it. Cocktails are delicious. When the weather is nice and the side porch is open, it's even better. Sometimes there is a really great DJ (weekends only). I say, go with friends, drink and drink and drink and dance. Oh and bring cash cuz that's your only option.
Great party on Saturday afternoon! Caipirinhas can be expensive but you will have a great time. Place is more for singles.
Not sure why this place has so few stars. Came on a Tuesday night around 6:30 & it was empty, but that quickly changed within the hour.
The waitress was attentive and very helpful when it came time to order our drinks. She recommended this apple cinnamon alcoholic beverage that was served warm. A delightful comfort on a cold November night. We ordered the seafood platter (calamari, fish cakes, shrimp and fries fish strips). Perfectly seasoned.
As we were leaving the bartender invited is to come back on a Saturday to hear the live band. I'll definitely take him up on the invitation.
ATMOSPHERE: Cute! This place is always packed, but we had a reservation and were promptly seated. However, service took FOREVER. I mean, uncomfortably long. It's a shame, because if they had properly served us, we probably would've spent more money and ordered a second round of drinks. Tsk, tsk.
FOOD: Partner's food totally beat mine out. He had skirt steak with some spicy, creamy pasta side. I had the chicken salad, which, shame on me, because who goes to a meat joint and orders a chicken salad?
DRINKS: Had their drink special called Miss Favela Caipirinha. Mine was with strawberry flavoring. Interesting liquor. Not sure if I was the biggest fan, but they had a lot of options and pitcher options available as well.
OVERALL: Good food and drinks. A bit pricey, and please pay attention to your customers!
