Admittedly, my experience with Caribbean food is almost non-existent. Unless you count what I ate in New Orleans and some jerk chicken I've made myself, though I tend not to.
The decor is colorful, quirky, warm, and welcoming- so is the service. Our waitress happily answered whatever questions we had. I'd come back for drinks just to sit in a beautiful environment, and the cocktails were worth coming back for.
But I thought the food was bland. For $25, I want to be blown away by that jerk pork. I also tried some kind of ramen dish, with pork belly and jerk chicken. Same story. Caribbean ramen is obviously fusion and therefore questionable, but I've had similar ramens before and loved them. I was told the spice was pretty substantial, but I didn't detect any. The scotch bonnet sauce on the table didn't really do it for me either (though I didn't use much because aside from any heat issues, I just wasn't digging the flavor). Everything we had was cooked absolutely perfectly though.
Came here for the boozy brunch. Had a reservation for 9 people at 3pm. Our entire party was on time. We waited outside because it was tight inside. The hostess acknowledged that we had been waiting a long time (almost 30 mins). Finally we were seated. We were given glasses with no water. No waiter, we weren't even given menu's. What?!
Our waiter also happened to be the DJ – tough life! I don't really get how this place functions with 2 waitstaff attending the ENTIRE restaurant and one is the DJ. I am confused.
He finally says we will get drinks. Me and two friends shouted we wanted bloody marys but he disappears. Then, we get empty champagne glasses and he starts putting raspberries in them. He gives us a giant bellini pitcher. Um, I'm sorry I'm not a picky person but I just want the menu and a drink that I ordered not some round of whatever you want to give us.
The menu comes out, I try to get his attention. We order. By the time food comes it was legit 5pm. I had had about ~3 drinks and then another woman comes over and starts telling us that our 2 hour time limit is up. Oh no, the lawyer at our table set the timer for when we actually got our drinks which was 3:45pm so we were not skimping on this bottomless deal.
I'm sorry, the food was delicious but the service is unacceptable here. The ackee and salt fish was really quite good but by the time we ate it was time to setup for dinner. By the way, the whole time, there was a table of about 6 ladies behind us who got their menu's, food, and waitress serving them before us and they came after we were seated. Christina (think she was a manager) was gracious enough to discount our bill but NYC has plenty of bottomless brunch options and I will not bringing my business back here. It was absolutely ridiculous how slow the service was. Our waiter was trying but they need to hire at least 3 more waitstaff to service this restaurant properly and train them.
Paid $18 for the ackee and saltfish meal, which came with one festival, 4 friend plantains and a side of fruit. We skipped the cocktails. The food was delicious and very filling, but kind of on the pricier side. That being said, it is soho and I like that they did not skimp on the ackee as many places are wont to do.
The service was timely and okay (not exceptional, but not terrible as some of the past reviewers experienced) and they didn't rush us out the door.
The only feedback I would give is to serve the fruit plate first and the warm meal after instead of together so that my food is not getting cold while I eat my fruit.
When i'm so charmed by a spot that i return mere days after my 1st visit, you gotta know it's LIT!!!
A longtime homie introduced me to Miss Lily's and i'm truly grateful for it. Why? Cuz the food is bangin'!!! i was already 5 bites deep into my delectable fish sandwich when my homegirl lets me know that one of chefs at the spot is Andre Fowles who won on an episode of the Food Network's "Chopped" this past February. AND who happened to just be leaving the restaurant as i'm noshing and imbibing? Chef Fowles himself of course. But i'm from Brooklyn. We just don't mobb celebs. So i respectfully tipped my hat from a distance and dug into my callaloo.
But they've def got something special going on at Miss Lily's. The vibe is so chill, combined with NYC summer and a constant rotation of good tunes, it feels like you're by di beach somewhere in Jamaica.
The 2nd time i returned for dinner. Lily's Punch livened my mood, and i stuffed myself to the gills with the mac n cheese, pepper shrimp, AND the fish tacos. Everything was seasoned well, full of flavor, and truly good.
The only flaw i can see at this lovely spot is the presence of 1 measly restroom. If you not gon' let me see the bottom of my glass, ima need more than one restroom! Other than this minor inconvenience, Miss Lily's is a welcome addition to my list of reliably good restaurants in my favorite city on the planet.
Always wanted to try this place. Place always seem to be packed.
We came right between the ending of happy hour and beginning of dinner – was able to get a table right away and by the time we left – place was packed. Would have rather sat outside – more space for you . Inside it's very cramped. Staff is nice but laid back so maybe service isn't as swift lets just say.
Menu is small but have all the main things people may want for an island / carribean menu .
Drinks are so-so. I ended up only having one.
Tried the cod fritters and fish taco apps which were good.
I had the jerk chicken- which comes with one side. I chose the peas and rice. The chicken is a large portion but mine was not entirely cooked well and the jerk seasoning was scarce compared to my friends. My friend loved hers which was basically the same thing. The peas and rice was bland . I don't know- I kinda expected more for a 100 buck tab.
Maybe I came on a off day.
It's 50/50 if I'll come back.
Negril isn't right around the corner.
The hostes has a very, very weird sense of humor. I can tell She's a nice lady, but I had the missfortune of watching how she threw "jokes" at costumers that weren't being very well received. Same joke about three times on my watch.
Other than that, the waiters and waitresses were extremely nice. If you go there, please try the corn. TRY THE CORN. It is out of this world. Absolutely spectacular. Do it. Other dishes were good too.
Miss Lily's was the perfect satiation for my Jamaican food craving thanks to our bellman's recommendation. The bf and I arrived a half hour after they opened, and the place was already packed! We got lucky and were seated at the bar, gladly.
The atmosphere was festive in bright colorful decor and Carribean beats playing in the background. The staff also added to the tropical celebratory vibes with their exotic looks and vibrant clothing. Our bartender was super busy but eventually took our orders and served us up a Red Stripe for my bf and the white sangria for me. I liked the kiwi garnish touch. Ordering was quick once "oxtail" and "goat" were spotted on the menu. The shisito peppers were piquant to my taste buds with the spicy salty spices to dip in and the flavor of the peppers. I definitely indulged in my bf's yummy oxtail with meat falIng off the bone, but I was loving my goat curry with basmati rice and roti. The roti was warm, soft and so fresh-perfect for dipping in both our exotic spiced sauces. They certainly provided a generous amount of rice to sop up all the sauce too! We both also got a coconut red bean rice.
We walked out of Miss Lily's very satisfied. Although, slow service at times, our busy bartender was still complaisant in taking care of us. Dinner wasn't cheap but was worth the excellent food. This is the type of meal I expected to have in NYC!
We came here for brunch and reallllly liked this place for several reasons:
1. You can make OpenTable reservations!
2. The fun decor
3. The Jamaican Patty Melt + Coconut Pancakes were soooo bomb!!!
Loved it and going back this weekend for a friend's birthday!
