  1. Upon first glance this place feels like you are eating dinner in someone's Southern style home. It's decorated with old photos of the owners' family on the walls.

In the menu it tell the story about how the restaurant is owned by the daughters that were inspired by their mothers cooking. The restaurant itself is named after their mother Miss Mamie. I loved seeks all of the photos of their family, especially knowing the recipes were probably passed down for generations.

My friend and I ordered the Famous Southern Fried Chicken. It came with two sides and was big enough for two people to share. The cornbread served as a free appetizer to your table was delicious! It melted in your mouth.

All of the food was wonderful! Also try the famous Spoonbread punch! I couldn't get enough of it!

  2. Went there based on a groupon, the food was amazing.  I'm glad I had the groupon though because otherwise this place is a bit pricey for comfort food.  Having said that, the Fried Chicken was amazing and so was the Catfish.  The Mac-N-Cheese was solid but nothing to write home about, but the candied yams were good.  The service was a little slow considering how small the place was, nor was it packed.  The ambiance was ok.  Drinks were a little on the sweet side.  The four stars is definitely for the food (possibly 3.5 but I was craving southern)

  3. I came here with some friends on a groupon that was $30 for $60 worth of food. It did not list at the time any restrictions. Upon arrival we discovered that roughly half the menu would not be an option for us – including the chicken and waffles which was very disappointing.

As far as decor goes, there isn't much. It's essentially a plain cube with a bunch of tables squeezed in with chairs that are just a bit big for the space. There really isn't any ambiance. Which is a shame.

I think our server was new since she seemed out of her element. She kept referring to the beers in the basement that we could order, which wasn't terribly inspiring. Our appetizer came out with our entrees, which sort of defeats the purpose. They claimed to have a bar but when our friend ordered a Manhattan the girl stared at us blankly and said "What's that?" One of our friends ordered the gumbo and after our entrees arrived and the gumbo hadn't the girl finally came out saying, "Someone called and said something in our gumbo is bad and so we can't serve it now." Which gave us all a little pause before eating. I wanted to take her aside and say, "You probably should have just said you were fresh out of gumbo. But thanks for the honesty."

I will say that you get a lot of food with your order, which probably ties in to the Southern experience. Everyone ordered something different. I had the fried chicken and I will admit it was expertly fried. Everyone else agreed the rest of the food was adequate but it wasn't really mind-blowing. Which is a shame. I love some fried chicken and sausage gravy and biscuits and was really looking forward to good Southern cooking.

Sadly, I don't think we'll be coming back, though I could perhaps be persuaded to order out the fried chicken again, but that's about it.

  4. My boyfriend and I walk past this place pretty often, and kept thinking that Southern food might be nice sometime. We hadn't really looked at it too closely though, so when we finally walked in, we had a surprise for two reasons. First of all, it's a really cute little place! Much nicer ambiance than I was expecting for a restaurant on the edge of Harlem. On the other hand though…a lot more expensive than I had expected. Each entree was between $15-20, which was a little more than I had really thought I was going to pay that night. So, we'll call those two little surprises a wash.

Food was definitely delicious, so at least we were paying for something that was worth it. The variety on the menu isn't the best, but if you're looking for Southern soul food, you came to the right place. Later on, I was browsing Groupon and I found a deal for Miss Mamie's, so I might come back with that later, if I ever want to try it again. I'm not sure I would be rushing back without the Groupon, but with the discount, I'll probably try it again.

  5. This place is the definition of hidden gem. If you didn't know it was there you could walk right past it and not even notice, and the outside is very deceiving. I was very surprised to walk in and find myself in a very bright, warm little restaurant. The staff was all extremely nice and attentive end the food was fantastic. I got the fried chicken and my bf ordered the fried shrimp, both were soooooo good. You could tell it was completely homemade. Also, I HIGHLY recommend the string beans. I know that's a strange thing to recommend but the way they season and cook them was quite possibly the best I've ever had. Although it place is a bit pricey, the food was good so it was worth it. We went in with a groupon and they were very nice about it and we could order almost anything. One warning though… the prices on their website are lower than the prices on the menu in the restaurant by a couple dollars so don't be surprised when you go in the restaurant and end up spending a bit more than you anticipated. Overall, I really liked this little restaurant and will definitely be back.

  6. It's interesting to see the angry reviews about service. It was fine today – perhaps things are better at off-peak hours.

The fried chicken was phenomenal, with a simple but addictive coating and tons of flavor right down to the bone. The tangy collard greens were another highlight. I found the mac and cheese and seafood gumbo skippable. I haven't made up my mind about the sweet tea – was it too sweet and is there such a thing?

My dining companion was on the healthier side of things, allowing me to sample surprisingly good trout and cabbage.

  7. Alicia Keys may have gave this place her thumbs up on Foursquare, but I can't say that I was overly impressed with the food.  The fried chicken is still solidly eclipsed by the magic up at Charles' Country Pan Fried Chicken, and the waffles were just on par with those at my neighbourhood diner around the corner.  The smothered fried chicken was fine but the green beans had an odd, smoky flavour to it – and when I say smoky, I don't mean "hickory-smoked woodsy", I mean it smelled like someone had been smoking a cigarette over the stove while they were cooking.  The corn bread was also unimpressive, which was unfortunate as we had our hopes propped up quite high before our visit.

Fortunately, our service was actually quite good, contrary to what many other reviewers have reported.  Friendly faces and prompt service was our experience, so maybe they've taken notice of the bad reviews and stepped up their game.

  8. We were wary at first, because no one was in the place at 2:00 pm. We went on anyway.
Lunch items were still available until 3.
Husband ordered fried chicken with potato salad. I ordered the meatloaf with Mac and cheese. Mine was really tasty. Don't know about the chicken, since the husband doesn't share.
The meatloaf had what I would call a creole taste. Two slices on the plate plus the Mac. Plenty of food. The stars were the Mac and the cornbread. Yum.
Plenty of food for about $10. The first real bargain we've come across in NY so far. Ha, ha.
