  1. This is my second favorite sushi restaurant in the Chatham-Madison area (my first being Yuki Hana). My sister and I actually have a never-ending debate on which Japanese restaurant is better because she favors Mits and I have an undying love for Yuki – we've agreed to disagree. Either way, BOTH sushi spots serve up incredibly fresh and delicious sushi and I have to give Mitsuba credit where it is due – you almost never have to wait for a table because they have a large dining area, the fish is always fresh and of great quality, and it's BYOB which is awesome because there is a liquor store around the corner that sells some really good sake. One thing that makes Mitsuba standout from the rest is their Magic Roll (crunchy tuna avocado roll w/spicy sauce, eel sauce & miso sauce, scallion & caviar on top) – it is unbelievable (but very rich so make sure you share it with your fellow diners… or hog it all, whatever).

  2. i have been to this place once and won't be back.  I generally love Japanese food and sushi in particular.  If you fall in that camp you will be very disappointed unless they had a bad night.

Sushi quality – very poor.  big pieces of fish that had a fishy taste to them.  Could barely choke them down and had a worry that I might get sick (I didn't).  However if you understand what its like to eat fish that is too cold and too old you may get a sense.  Too much rice and it wasn't well prepared (ie cold, stuck together vs being the type of sushi rice that you find in finer establishments).

Teriyaki – huge portion of terrible teriyaki.  The taste was sauteed vs grilled.  sauce was too much and not good.

am stunned that people actually like this place.

  3. After so many wonderful meals here, we placed a take out order on a super busy Friday night. Yes, I will caveat this updated review with the fact that it was take-out. And generally we never order in because it is never as fresh. But given the usual high quality and freshness of the sashimi we are used to, I had no reason to think tonight would not be good.

In fact, 3 stars might be generous. The live scallop sashimi special was terrific as usual as was the yellowtail carpaccio appetizer. So yummy! But the fluke appetizer, and sashimi platters (all individually selected by me) were actually not good at all. The white tuna was fishy, the fluke tough, the salmon sliced so thick and chewy, the toro sashimi warm and almost too mushy (we know a good fatty tuna but this was just not good texture), and the uni (which was a special) was plain bad-it tasted over cooked and sour!

To their credit, they provided us with plenty of ponzu sauce and extra pickled ginger as requested.

The kitchen seemed overwhelm (it took 75 minutes from time of order to be ready–and we were told 30 minutes) and on numerous occasions the woman at the front and on the phone kept harping about how big our order was and that it was too much food for four people! We didn't order any rolls other than two naruto rolls and two no rice hand rolls!!

Not that we care what she says or thinks but it struck us all a little strange that she kept basically saying she couldn't believe how much we were eating! Just a very unusual and less than pleasant exchange.

Still..our friends enjoyed their food at our house and we will return in person in hopes that this was just a very off night. But who wants any "off" night when it comes to raw fish??

  4. The ginger salad dressing is some of the best I've tasted. Creamy. Strong. Drinkable.

Had the Lover Roll (lobster)and Fancy Roll (tuna).  Each come with the sauces on the side which is a plus because they were sweet and mayo based. (Check out the pics).

Very filling. Should have only gotten one because they are specialty rolls, but they were delicious.

Service was great! Constant refills on the water. Only knock is I was extremely thirsty all night and was left with a slightly bad taste and dry mouth. Price you pay I guess? Probably all the salt.

Oh, and price was reasonable. A little over $30 for 2 special rolls and a salad.

  5. Mitsuba was fantastic. This is one of the better sushi spots I've eaten at in quite some time, and I knew I had to post a review as soon as I got in.

I don't know what anyone below is talking about in reference to the sushi being old or smelly, or tasting fishy; it couldn't be more of the opposite from my experience here…

Our salads with ginger dressing were fantastic as appetizers, which I'm a HARSH critic for. The dressing was nice and thick; tangy and just a bit sweet. The offerings, like many have said below me, are definitely interesting. They have some unique rolls with good combos, but personally, I'm a classic roll kinda feller…

The actual rolls we got were terrific — warm, big, and fresh as can be. The spicy tuna, spicy scallop, futo maki, and spicy yellow tail rolls all came out perfectly and tasted great. The consistency of them were spot-on. The service was also quick, with our waitress being completely satisfactory.

When in Chatham, this is your spot. You won't regret it.

    BONZAI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. LOVE. THIS. SPOT. It is my favorite sushi place in the area. I used to hit up Yuki Hana and actually refused to go to Mitsuba because I was scared I'd like it more. And then I went. And that was it. They have some very creative rolls, a nice, open room, high ceilings, clean, nice bathrooms and even a tv for your sports-addicted boyfriends. Service is fast and as expected at a sushi joint. It's also BYOB. Awesome.

  7. Fresh sushi, creative rolls.  Good for dining in or take-out.
Salad with ginger dressing could have been a bit better drained/dried–too watery.
Just a good local sushi joint.
