This is a major welcome addition to Gansevoort Market, which fills the gaping void for a satisfying dessert left by the sudden disappearance of the short-lived Jeni's Ice Cream Pop-up.
This is the second location, after the one in Little Italy, which is also well-positioned in another area that is severely lacking in ice cream options. Either way though, the gelato here is really excellent. They have the standard gelato flavors you would expect, as well as some really excellent, unique ones. Best of all of is Delirium, made with chocolate chip biscotti cookies and cream, while Giulia is a close second, made with caramel and salted peanuts.
In addition to cups and cones, you can also get these great flavors stuffed inside of a Hot Panino ($6). This looks and sounds better than it usually is though, as I find they are usually a little stingy with the gelato, and it's mostly the bread. The combination of hot, fluffy bread and cold gelato is still pretty amazing.
There are a few other good options for sweets in the market, like the greek yogurt, crepes and macarons, but this is definitely the top choice for an excellent dessert.
There is something about beauty, about how transient and fragile it is, that makes it precious. I think about times I have had with those I've loved, with family members who have passed away, and it makes me want to cry how brief and tenuous those moments we shared were.
Ice cream is kind of like the food version of this feeling. I know it sounds stupid, but it is something that is so fleeting it barely even exists on the tongue before it transforms, before it becomes something that has no real connection to ice cream. It's no surprise that ice cream is often associated with childhood, it is itself childhood.
And so that brings us to M'O II, probably the closest to Italian gelato you can currently score in the city. It is easily in the top 5-10 ice cream joints in NYC in my opinion. The milk chocolate, almond, nociolla, and nutella are all absurdly good. The taste and lightness of the ice cream is outstanding.
I wish all love could last forever. I wish all ice cream could just be what it is eternally. But we are so lucky to ever have been alive at all, ever to have eaten gelato like this, ever to have been with that girl or guy that we love, even it was only for a moment.
