Overall the food isn't bad. I like the chicken teriyaki that comes with onions. Last time it was raw so I sent it back and it was still raw. Before that I didn't have as many problems. I heard the sushi is good too.
The last time I wrote a review for Momoya, I spoke a lot about their food and very little about the service. I just want to emphasize, this time around, how consistently GREAT the service is here.
I had a big family lunch here, back in June, to celebrate my graduation. A few weeks beforehand, I inquired about reserving a large chunk of the restaurant for a party of 35 on a Sunday. I came in five days before our lunch, sat down with the owner to pre-order the food for our party, and she was genuine and extremely helpful in helping me select portion sizes and menu items. We ordered about $600-700 in food.
The day of the lunch, everything went according to plan. Appetizers were on the tables – sharing plates provided. The sushi boats were placed on each table, with a variety of choices for everyone to choose from. The teriyaki/kitchen items were all served buffet-style. The servers were extremely attentive, helping out whenever there was an opportunity to.
Every time I come in here, whether it's with my parents or with my boyfriend, the owner never fails to come by our table and see how we're doing. She really does everything right!
As I've said in my previous review, I've been a Momoya customer since I was in high school and though their waiters and waitresses may have changed over time, the service has never faltered. Great to see a local business thrive for so many years!
Followed the hype from other reviews to this place and it was a solid meal for sure but wasn't hit with anything spectacular. I'm not a huge sushi fan so when I find myself in a Japanese resturant I'm looking for their other dishes to be really good. My favorite thing was the Gyoza appetitzer – pork dumpling. Very tasty, excellent sauce. I had the Katsu chicken with brown rice. Chicken was plentiful and crispy but the sauce gave me a like it – don't like feeling. It was good and not very good at the same time like may e it was meant as a maranade and not a dipping sauce. I tried the Take roll which i think had eel, tuna and spicy salmon. They were just ok, but again not crazy about sushi. The service and seating were ok, nice decor and food presentation but nothing amazing. If you're a big sushi eater maybe give it a shot.
Two words: mind blown. I've had sushi good and great, but never in a million years of this caliber. Came here with some friends on a weeknight and I got the Fancy Home Roll- tuna, salmon, avocado on top (see picture). DIVINE. Avocado was perfect ripeness, sashimi were perfectly tender, presentation was flawless, and very decent portion! The sriracha on top was a nice touch. Definitely full after a roll.
Also tried the Momoya spicy tuna, also 5/5 with this tangy flavor and fried yellowtail I think on top.
Finished off with green tea tempura ice cream and mochi ice cream. Tempura one was perfectly warm without melting the ice cream too much though we wish it came in a bowl, and fried to perfection. Never had anything like it! Mochi one came in 4 halves with whipped cream.
Summary: add Momoya to your bucket list sushi places wherever you're from!!
I asked for shrimp curry but they didn't have it. I was a bit bummed out since that's what I really wanted. But we ended up ordering tons of sushi. Very yummy. Very fresh. And I drank the taro bubble tea- Delicious. Service was great. And the restaurant itself is very cute.
Side note: the sushi display is like a piece of art. They put great effort into not only making the food taste great but also making it picture perfect.
I've eaten here once and I would recommend it and personal return.
I see some really nice pictures of presentations in store, but for takeout without that fancy presentation it seems like the food doesn't speak for itself.
First off I found their online ordering system terrible. For someone who fairly frequently orders take out, I've seen much better systems so there's no reason for it to be so inefficient. I was going to check it now to detail it better but of course it's "Sorry! Online order temporarily unavailable, please call to place order! Back" As I remember, I wanted to order 2 chicken teriyakis and you have to select by quantity, so in the comments I had to write what was different: one with soup one with salad. Ideally I could order for one person and add preferences then go back and order for another instead of ordering for both and trying to differentiate in the "special notes". They also had to call me and ask if I wanted brown or white rice and if I ordered sushi or sashimi. This would be MUCH better if these options were selectable when ordering, both so I don't have to take a personal call at work and to not waste their time either. Also their site plays music and I think one of the first lessons from a web design class I took was don't auto play music, people don't like that.
For the chicken teriyaki, the chicken was good but it had very few carrots/broccoli and a lot of onions which I don't think are standard for this dish (at least not from experience or a quick google search of recipes.) As someone who hates onions, it was disappointing to find a bed of them under the dish.
I think the decor was super cute and I may try to order just sushi in the future. I'm not sure if I want to try the dine in or not. It's probably better but possibly only in the visuals. They were able to accommodate me calling up and asking for a later pick up time. This may be better quality than the kind I've gotten from mall food courts, but for the price I wasn't impressed by the taste.
Came here during Bloomfield Restaurant Week. They had a pretty sweet deal going on – $30 for a Miso Soup, Seaweed Salad, 1 Appetizer of Choice (Shumai, Shrimp Tempura or Edamame), 1 Entree of Choice (Sushi Combo, 2 Specialty Rolls of Choice or a Teriyaki Dish), and 1 Dessert of Choice (Ice Cream or Fried Cheesecake). The soup was good, had a good flavor and the standard tofu and seaweed, but nothing special to rave about. The seaweed salad was delicious and had a great sesame taste to it with a bit of a crunch. The Sushi tasted very fresh. I personally liked the Cilantro Yellow Tail Roll. The seared peppered tuna is an awesome touch.
Tip: This place is BYOB, so don't forget the booze!
Best sushi in the Montclair/Bloomfield area hands down. I've tried those joints on Bloomfield Ave and they are overpriced and mediocre. I ordered takeout from momoya and not only was the sushi very fresh, but the amount of fish they put in my rolls was seriously bomb. I'm talking huge hunks of salmon. The price point on their lunch menu is unbeatable as well.
Definitely my new go-to sushi spot!
