  1. That Monmouth Street Grocery & Deli isn't the best Italian deli in a mile radius speaks more about that mile than about the quality of the food.

While they mostly do sandwiches, they also have a rotating selection of hot dishes (chicken piccata, eggplant rollatini, et al). Their strengths lay in sandwiches: fresh, brick oven baked bread and quality meats for a decent price. Either of their specialty heroes (the Hamilton Park [sopressata, prosciutto, hot ham, fresh mozz, sharp provolone, EVOO, and roasted peppers] and the Monmouth Street (Genoa salami, prosciuttini, fresh mozz, capicola, sharp provolone, and sweet peppers) are about a foot long and will run you $9.

The bread isn't quite as good as Second Street, the meats not as good as Andrea Salumeria, and it seems like the place will close at random…but it's still a fine place to grab lunch

  2. I usually seem to forget about Monmouth street. When I am in Jersey City I usually hit Second St. Deli, but Mounmouth is a great alternative.

They have daily hot food specials as well as Italian sandwiches and salads. They also have great, crispy brick oven bread. Nice place to stop, and it's only a few blocks away from the Holland Tunnel.

  3. I've had this place bookmarked for a while because it looked like they had really good sammies. Sadly, I was mistaken when I finally decided to give this place a try one Friday afternoon. My boyfriend and I ordered two sammies – the Hamilton Park and the Monmouth Street. I can't remember what exactly was in them but it was some combination of prosciutto, salami, hot ham, provolone, parmesan, sopressata, and/or roasted peppers. Both contents of the sammie tasted pretty similar but the major difference was the bread. The Monmouth is your typical hero you would get from a supermarket. Not the freshest, but still edible. Hamilton Park on the other hand, uses this "pizza bread" which is ridiculously chewy. Before you even finish half of the sandwich, your jaw will be extremely tired. It's like an Olympic workout but for your face.

Maybe their other sandwiches are better? But if I had to judge from their tray of dry-looking chicken parm, I highly doubt that. I really wanted to like this place but I guess I still have not found my go-to Italian sammie place yet.
