Montclair Bread Company is amazing. They offer several varieties of donuts. A must try is the maple bacon donut, which is a soft donut with gobs of maple frosting with strips of bacon on top. They also offer cereal donuts with varieties such as fruity pebbles and lucky charms.
All of the ingridents are fresh and it is recommended that you enjoy that same day.
There are also lots of different grab and go coffee options. Come to MBC early if you want to try one of their limited special flavors. Its also a tiny shop which can get crowded.
Nutella donuts? Enough said …
I was first introduced to Montclair Bread Company and their tasty donuts at a small event in Montclair. I saw fruity pebbles on a donut and just couldn't resist. The maple bacon donut is what really tugged on my boyfriend's heart strings. From there on, we were hooked. I've since bought two dozens to bring in for co-workers and classmates. Both times they were a hit.
As mentioned before, currently there are Nutella, Dulce de Leche, and Apple Cider flavored donuts, all available in both regular and mini. What's not so appealing is the price tag. I paid $32 for a variety dozen.
Beware: these donuts are meant to be consumed fresh! Twice I've stopped by the shop at 6am and once I arrived at my destination, made sure they were gone before 10am (pretty easy to do). Made with all natural ingredients, none of the stuff that keeps it preserved while sitting on the shelf but rots your insides. If all natural means it'll become a little stale, that's a-okay with me.
Really cute place tucked away off of busy Bloomfield Ave. The place is small but don't let that fool you – they are serving up really great quality stuff. I ordered a Taylor ham, egg and Brie on a multigrain roll and was pleased with the clean quality of the food. I had to stuff more food in my face so I washed it down with a maple bacon doughnut. Perfect amount of savory and sweet. One is plenty though.
The doughnuts were going fast (it was National Doughnut Day) and a ton of people were squeezed in ordering bread, sandwiches and various beverages. No where to sit inside but they have a few small tables out front for those nice days.
I'll be back and you should join me!
So, it's finals time and during finals I work on a study = rewards basis. The rewards are usually food and so, this morning I made my way to MCB for a donuts reward.
The donut case was full of options which I guess is a plus for going at a random time during the week instead of on a weekend. I opted for a selection of 6 (to share, of course!) and got the fruity pebbles, maple bacon, nutella, tres leches, just chocolate, and pistachio flower. When I got home, I obviously made a Franken-donut out of a slice of each so I could decide which was my favorite. Verdict: a tie between the nutella and maple bacon! The icing on the nutella donut was ridiculously good and it had a nice amount of filling, while the maple bacon just hit its flavor profile on every point. I was most disappointed by the tres leches. I was expecting a sort of gooey, condensed milk center but it just seemed plain with some whipped cream on top.
Minus one star for the lackadaisical service of the two girls in the front. I asked if the pistachio FLOWER donut had any floral flavor because I loathe that rose/lavender taste that reminds me of candles or soap. The first girl couldn't really answer ("well it has a pistachio glaze") and the second girl acted as if it were the dumbest question on earth ("ummmm no the flower part of the name is because there's a flower on it").
I will be back to try some of their non-donut offerings!!
Have you ever looked back at an old review and thought, "Who wrote that?" When I peruse my old "I go here for the bread" review, I basically want to punch myself in the face. I don't know when I got high on their doughnuts, but it was shortly after writing my stupid first review of this place. Since then, MBC has blown up my Instagram feed with drool-inducing photos of their Fruity Pebbles doughnut, as well as all of the other friends (Tres Leches, Nutella – just go on the feed and get a little fatter just looking).
The quaint shop of yesteryear has expanded, but the doughnut quality has not gone down one bit. I am now what I once scoffed at, someone who thinks of MBC as their own personal doughnut shop rather than a Bread Company. The facts are pretty simple: they do everything well here from bread and sandwiches to home brewed iced teas and sweets, but seriously, if you don't know about their doughnuts by now, crawl out from under that rock and enjoy this weather. Then go and get an assortment of six doughnuts from MBC and pretend like you're going to share them. You won't.
Make sure you come to Montclair Bread Company early enough or else your favorite donuts may be sold out! I have only tried the donuts here, but that is more than enough to have me keep coming back here!
They always promote to come early to get these donuts, since on some days if it is particular busy, many of them will sell out. I remember the last time I was here, the person in front of me got two of this particular doughnut I wanted, and there were ONLY TWO LEFT. Ahhhhh… I was not a happy camper initially, but I was satisfied with the others I had. Some of the ones I have that I liked include Tres Leches , Fruity Pebbles, Creamsickle, Maple Bacon, Apple Cider, Glazed, Nutella. I would say the specialty ones I like the most are Tres Leches and Fruity Pebbles.
However, having the specialty donuts is a bit much for me sometimes, since they are a good size. If I'm just going to eat one doughnut myself, I will be simple and have a Glazed or Apple Cider doughnut, both are no frills donuts and hit the spot! In addition, these are your cheapest option for donuts here at $2! The majority of the others go for $3 or $4, so be prepared to dig into that wallet if you are getting a bunch for yourself and friends.
Having these doughnuts are well-worth it, and I would really recommend sharing and having pieces of the different varieties to see how you may like them. The establishment also will have seasonal flavors, so be on the lookout for that!
It might be hard to give a complete review, as I showed up about an hour before the closed and there wasn't much left. I got a chocolate hazelnut donut, which was great but I really was looking forward to some of their other donut flavors. Still, it was a good price, very tasty, and purchase was made quickly. Let that be a lesson for you all, don't wait until closing, although it sucks they close by 2 on Saturday and Sunday because I don't often get myself out of bed and out by then. I do plan on being back for more when I can make it there earlier.
I recently moved to North Caldwell and my sweet tooth was kicking in. So what was I to do? Yelp for a place where I could find yummy homemade donuts!!! Montclair Bread Company is not only a sweet treat place, but they sell breads and breakfast sandwiches as well. My friend got a brioche bread with egg and cheese and it was to die for! The place is very very small, so small that opening the door upon entering gets in the way of the food case. There is fresh coffee that you can grab yourself by the window and the staff is super friendly! I love coming here in the morning and enjoying a nice cup of coffee and pairing it with a donut!
