OMG so good. It's a pity that I'm rarely in the neighborhood, because if I worked around the corner, I would eat here lunch and dinner. We ordered two platters, but I can't wait to come back to try the many different salads and sandwiches. Think well-flavored, reasonably-priced, pretty healthy home cooking.
(1) Miso-glazed salmon platter: the salmon was a little overcooked but I loved the sauce poured over the brown rice. The best part was the slightly burnt crispy portion of the fish.
(2) Shanghai home-style spare ribs: these could have come straight out of my mom's kitchen. My favorite part is eating the bit of saucy gristle tucked around each piece of bone.
NEXT TIME: spicy Thai steak salad, tofu and buckwheat noodles salad, grilled lemongrass shrimp
Read other reviews and decided to stop in for lunch. I wasn't disappointed. No wait at 1:00 so I guess I got lucky. It did fill up an stay that way while I was there. I started with the pea shoot and garlic dumplings. They were very good but I thought the dough was a bit chewy-as if they sat out a bit too long and dried a bit. I then had the smoke whitefish sandwich. It was served with a green salad with ginger citrus dressing which was very good. I'm a big smoked whitefish fan and have never had it other than by itself on a bagel so took a bit of a leap of faith. It was a bahn mi style sandwich on great french bread with freshly prepared daikon, red peppers and cucumbers. It was fantastic. There are a log of other things on the menu I'd like to try but if I get back here it will be difficult not to order this sandwich again because you just won't find it anywhere else!
Had several dishes here in the past– Curry Chicken Stew, Grilled Lemongrass Shrimp, Miso-Glazed Salmon and I wasn't impressed. After reading the reviews, I decided to give them another chance. This time, I opted for the Short Ribs Shanghai Home-Style.
The feeling remains. They are mediocre at best. Portions are stingy, expect a lot of rice or greens but a small portion of protein. Their flavor has potential but each time I've order, either things are overcooked and dry or drenched in sauce.
I stopped in with my girlfriend for dinner was was decently impressed. We went around 4 on a Sunday and the place was empty. The restaurant was a little stuffy and I'm not sure if I would chance it in the summer. Service was obviously quick as was the food.
We started with the crayfish dumplings which I enjoyed. I believe it came with 8 total and other than being a little under-cooked they were quite tasty. I got the slice steak plate as my main which I liked. It was a little salty but otherwise very good, the steak was fairly tender and a decent cut of meat. My girlfriend went with the salmon which was also very good. It was a nice sized piece of salmon cooked well in a decent sauce.
While it's not Chinatown cheap for the quality of food I think the prices are pretty reasonable. For $40 total with tax and tip I came out full and enjoying my meal.
Great for lunch or dinner. The miso glazed salmon is my favorite, marinated very nicely. I also recommend the steak with chimichurri and the lime rickey beverage.
One cold, windy Thursday evening, I met a friend for dinner at Mooncakes Foods around 5:30. Only two other parties were there at the time, so the waitress seated us and took our orders immediately.
I got the spring roll appetizer and a side of grilled eggplant. Our food came out crazy quickly, like probably less than ten minutes, which was kind of bizarre, but no complaints. The summer rolls were good, nothing too special, but the eggplant was awesome. It's lathered in a sweet teriyaki type sauce and super tender and delicious and such.
I'd definitely visit Mooncakes Foods again when around SoHo, especially on a rainy or snowy day. (Too specific?)The railroad diner layout made for a warm, homy environment, the perfect cozy escape from the elements.
After eating some desserts, I decided to stop by for dinner nearby since it was also freezing out. Found this place on Yelp and the pics looks so good! Came here and tried it out. I ordered the shrimp salad and it came with about 5 shrimps and a big bowl of salad. My boyfriend ordered the beef sandwich and it was really tasty but only had a little meet inside which wasn't enough for him.
Service was really good. The lady made sure the food was good. As the salad was a bit plain, I asked for sauce on the side. The lady gave me two different sauce, one spicy green sauce and a sweet sauce. Both were good depending on your liking. Overall great place to eat at. Super fast service as well.
I don't like to be unkind in reviews, because there are many hard working people at an establishment that don't deserve to be bashed.
So I will just say I had the wings and they were not to my liking and the person I was with had a salad and that she did not enjoy either.
Also it is not a place that you would necessarily go for the ambiance – many people I work with who recommended it do takeout.
