I had been eyeing this place since before they opened – with all the fast foodish burger places popping up now, I was curious to see what Mooyah brought to the table.
The interior is inviting – like other burger places you order first then are seated and your food is served to you. The way Mooyah works is you basically build your burger then add a side and beverage. You can choose between beef, turkey, and veggie, a couple different buns or lettuce wrap, cheeses, and a number of toppings and condiments. The fries come in three sizes and they also have some shakes to choose from as well. I decided on a turkey burger wrapped in lettuce and added Swiss cheese, tomato, grilled onions, and Mooyah sauce (i.e. Thousand Island dressing). I also had a small side of fries and a fountain beverage (self-serve).
After I sat and waited for my food I noticed some corners that were cut – the table I wanted to sit at wasn't wiped down from the last people that ate there, and when I went to get unsweetened iced tea from the fountain it was actually sweet tea. Also, they give you a plastic sign with a number on it after ordering so the server can identify you when giving you your food, but I noticed a number of these were left at tables from past patrons. It wasn't busy at all during my visit and there were at least 4 employees working – someone really could have wiped down the tables and collected the left-behind signs.
Anyway, the food is served on small trays – my burger was fine, but nothing to write home about; maybe I was missing out by not getting beef. Being wrapped in lettuce made it a little messy but they gave me a fork and knife which helped. The fries were underwhelming – they tasted like they were sitting out for a little while. My brother liked his burger, but felt the bun to be a little dry.
Overall, meh – the food wasn't terrible but in no way does Mooyah live up to its competitors (particularly Five Guys and Shake Shack). Two burgers, two small sides of fries and two fountain beverages cost $27 – so not worth it. Maybe they're still working out the kinks, but seeing the crowds over the last couple of months here I expected more.
