Now I understand what everyone is raving about. I love places like these – brings back a lot of good memories.
The seafood is displayed right as you enter, so you can see how good it looks. My wife had the branzino, full order and I had the prawns. They served pita, the tahini dip and a cucumber tomato salad. The dip and salad was really good, but I think the pita is not homemade as it got dry and hard real quick.
The grilled fish came wrapped in aluminum foil and it was a good size, very moist inside and although I was expecting the skin to be crisped, I guess the wrapping prevented it. Sill, it was very good. My prawns (4 for $15) was a great deal. It's not easy to find these around JC. Cooked in what they call garlic sauce, it had a lot of middle eastern spices on it, and some people might not be ready for that.
We will definitely be back to sample the other fishes such as sea bass, red snapper and tilapia.
Another hidden Gem in Jersey City that is easy to miss considering it is tucked in a busy street filled with street vendors and several other retail stores. Family owned, and absolutely delicious food that sticks to the basics (oven baked or bbq'd) with a good selection of local fish like black and stripes bass.
Got the grilled shrimp with came with an orgasmic sauce and also got a striped bass baked. Both were fantastic and did not break the bank. We left happy !
Unassuming spot. I've driven past here a million times and never realized what it was. Came here after looking for something not fried or drowning in cheese in my new neighborhood and scoping out the great reviews. Indeed, i'm looking forward to becoming a regular. It's pretty basic inside so I got an order of shrimp and a side of fried eggplant to go. I unpacked it carefully when I got home then proceeded to make an absolute glutton of myself. The eggplant were super flavorful, with tomatoes, onions, and peppers. The shrimp were shell on but the spices were intense. I quickly worked out a system of ripping off a chunk of the fluffy pita they provide and filling with shrimp and eggplant, then dipping in the sauce the shrimp came in. So. freaking. delicious. Can't wait to go again.
Good: Seafood!! Good menu options. Dishes ordered:
– Fried Stripped Bass entree
– Fried Branzino.
– Rice with Shrimp
– Calamari in tomato sauce
The entrees come with warm pita bread, tahini, fries and cucumber mint salad. All the accompaniments with the entree were fantastic. You can switch salad for fries for the entrees.
No frills place and run by a husband and wife so keeps the prices low.
Also they are open 7 days a week!
Bad: place is cozy with only a few tables. This is more of a take out place than a sit down place. They use a 3rd party delivery service that charges $4 for delivery.
Street parking around the restaurant can be tricky but there is paid park of nearby.
Ugly: nothing really
Will I be back: yes most likely will order delivery
I must start by saying that I am in general not a big fan of fish. I came here for the jumbo shrimps. Before coming here I was warned about the wait already, but man, it was long… We got seated right away, but it took 50'from the time we ordered till food arrived.
We ordered grilled branding and grilled jumbo shrimps. The fish was delicious, it's sooooo fresh and well marinated. The sauce is rich, flavorful and complement the fish so well. The shrimps on the other hand is mediocre, a bit mushy actually.
Everything just worked well for us yesterday. We were driving around looking for parking since there aren't that many spots where you could park. Luckily for us, the metered parking spot closest to the streetlight opened up and we were merely 10 feet or so from the actual restaurant. Although we arrived at 11:45am, we waited until 12:10pm-ish since the owner was still bringing in ingredients. We didn't order until roughly 12:30pm, but it was totally cool with us. Our patience was rewarded well.
Grilled Striped Bass Main Course (($17.99): Grilled to perfection. While the fish skin is charred, the flaky meat itself is moist, juicy, and flavorful. It was not a second overcooked. Each bite was enjoyable because the spice rub they use on the fish is an interesting mix of spicy and ardent flavors. It blends well with each of the different kinds of fish they offer. This "main course" comes with brown rice (or french fries), tehena, bread, and a salad. The salad is refreshing; the vegetables were fresh and crisp, while the vinaigrette they use had the perfect tanginess. We also enjoyed the tehena with bread.
My table also ordered grilled branzino and fried red snapper, both of which were just as delicious as my striped bass. Any of the whole fish they offer can be grilled, fried, or baked.
Hot Tea with Mint ($1.99): I actually wanted an ice tea, but the owner offered hot tea, so I gave it a shot. I'm not sure what kind of tea they brewed, but it was very aromatic. It had a smooth roasted taste that complemented well with the mint that was thrown in. If you order this, you might want to order an extra drink since their hot tea is served in a pretty small coffee cup.
Overall, we had a fantastic lunch. The service was great, everyone was friendly, and most importantly, the food was delicious. We will definitely come back here and try the rest of their fish selection.
Walked in and I felt like I walked into a seafood restaurant back in Egypt. We spoke Arabic with the owner from the get go and he treated us like we were family.
The seafood was so fresh and delicious!! We got the grilled shrimps for an app and they were fantastic too!
Would definitely be back!
I FINALLY made it out to Morgan.
This a Jersey City establishment that deserves every bit of praise it gets. It's tiny, so takeout is recommended, though the place isn't lacking charm. The focus is rightly on the food, with their Main Course offerings more than enough for two people to share (or for one person to make two dinners out of). Maxing out at $19, you get your choice of whole fish (ranging from cheaper choices such as tilapia and perch to delicacies like branzino and orata) with heaping sides of brown rice, tahini sauce, two pieces of fresh pita, and a tomato-cucumber-onion salad. The brown rice is tender and fragrant, the tahini thick, the pita soft, and the tomato salad immensely refreshing (with fresh veggies in an oil-and-vinegar dressing topped with dill and mint). The fish is clearly the star, prepared as your choice of baked, barbecued, or fried.
I went with the BBQ'd branzino. It took close to an hour for the meal to be prepped and driving back from JSQ on a Sunday evening is never fun but….it was worth it. The fish was as fresh as can be. What they term 'BBQ' is closer to what you'd think of as 'blackened': coated with spices and cooked at high heat until the exterior is crisp and the flesh tender. This is among the best fish I've had in a restaurant (McCormick's in Seattle still tops the list). The meat was mild and just firm enough, providing an excellent base for the heavily spiced crusted skin. The skin was a bit salty but the balance of spices worked well. This was not an easy eat, though: being a whole fish, you'll have to deal with a number of bones.
I'll be back at some point for something baked or fried. All in all, very highly recommended
