  1. For sure, I won't be going back to ShopRite again now that I have discovered this market. Clean, bright, fancy, high-end. Wow, what a difference. I also don't feel like someone is about to knock me on the head as I walk back to the hotel with my groceries.

Possibly the only down-side is that their shopping carts are for inside the store only. Since I'm only getting a bag or two at a time, this isn't an issue for me. But if you're thinking about a big shop, you'll need to get your own.

    Bonus: Free wi-fi.

  2. I am so jealous that Rachel A beat me to the first review!!

I just came back from Morton Williams on my lunch break today and it is FABULOUS!  Finally a supermarket right next to work!!  I can finally stop eating nasty Mall junk food!

Today I went in to see what all the fuss was about.  Lo and behold, I walked out of humidity and into air conditioned grocery shopping heaven.

I literally heard the angels sing as my eyes were filled with fresh bread, prepared meals, a hot lunch bar, aisles upon aisles of fresh fruit and veggies.

I turned to my boss and said "omg this is the color a tomato is supposed to be.." ( it was a nice deep dark "eat me now" red )

I went to sniff the sourdough bread while my boss and my coworker checked out the ready made pastas, salads, sandwiches, chickens, steak, cake, etc etc etc….

Then we decided to walk around the store to see what else it had to offer.  There are two aisles that are basically devoted to ASIAN food!!  Thai, Korean, Chinese, Japanese – it is all there.

It's so weird to see such an Americanized store with so many Asian products.  Usually when I go to an asian supermarket there is flourescent lighting, sticky floors, and people who don't speak english, but this place was like the best of both worlds.

It was kind of like me.  ABC.  American born Chinese.  Or in this case just a really Americanized place that contains a lot of Asian brands.

I can't wait to come back tomorrow and forever.  Goodbye Newport Mall, hello Grocery Heaven.

My boss and my coworker each left with one rotisserie chicken each.  I watched them devour it in the conference room.

    It must have been good.

  3. Quick note… -super- blowing AC. I like chilled, but I really felt like I was in a cooler the entire shopping trip!

Although, I did find non-iodized salt here for 79 cents. Nice. Most places you can't find this anymore.

  4. Expensive, yes, but convenient for when I'm making dinner and forgot a last-minute ingredient and don't want to head to ShopRite or ACME (formerly A&P). That said, they do have things that are worth buying per se. They have a good cheese selection with several varieties on sale every week, and a diverse array of international foods. There's plenty of East and South Asian goods, though more expensive than Chinatown or Journal Square of course. Their European goods, however, are actually quite nice because 1) they're hard to find in the first place; 2) there's no ethnic supermarkets for them; and 3) the small ethnic shops in NYC that do sell them are just as expensive if not more so. Case in point: I love British biscuits. I can get a roll of McVitie's Digestives for only $2.35 in Chinatown, but HobNobs aren't as readily available. Costing $5 at both of the two British shops in West Village, they're just $3.50 here.

Overall though, everything is just more expensive here. Often they sell ShopRite-branded goods at a markup compared to ShopRite itself. Their "sale" prices for meat and produce often end up being the same as regular price at ShopRite.

  5. If you live in the Jersey City/Hoboken area and you don't feel like going into NYC for Asian goods, then I say, come to Morton Williams.  I live in Hoboken and Morton Williams is pretty walkable from downtown Hoboken if you walk along the river.

Prices here are average, maybe slightly higher than, say, Shoprite.  But their selection at Morton Williams is pretty decent.  There is a big section of Indian, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean foods.  I even see paneer being sold in the dairy section, which I've never seen before.  There's also items like cold udon noodles, lots of Asian oils (sesame, ginger, etc.), and green tea mochi ice cream!

They're open until midnight every day, which is great.

  6. Overpriced grocery store.  And it's not exactly offering specialized products either.

This past weekend, I saw honeydew for $7.99.  Gulp.

I'm there only when I am on a time crunch and realize that I ran out of onions or milk.  Also, they close late at midnight. $5 delivery charge for Newport New Jersey area.

  7. The frequent overcharges cannot be accidental. I don't see how the cashiers are profiting from this so maybe it's just for fun. It's not like the actual prices are great bargains. I need to remember that a 15-minute walk to another store isn't so unbearable.

  8. I have been very happy with Morton Williams.  They are incredibly clean, neat, and well organized.  Their produce is very nice, and their selections of cheeses is fantastic.  They are more pricey than some of the other supermarkets, but you are paying for convenience.  If I am planning to do my weekly shopping, I would go to one of the other chains, but in a pinch, they are great.
