Mottsu
“Good lunch spot for hanging out with a friend or a casual meeting.”
“I thought that all of the tiny, hole-in-the-wall, no-frills, inexpensive restaurants had been driven out of Soho…but it's not true!”
“I enjoyed their take on Tuna tartare, but my favorite was their signature Tiger Roll, seared salmon over a spicy tuna roll.”

Great little place I wandered into while I was in the area. Wasn't too packed for a Friday night but very busy regardless due to orders made on the phone. The wait staff was very attentive & kind & the sushi was delicious. I ordered from the specialty menu, a coconut shrimp mango, SO GOOD! It had some mango sauce along with eel such -which happens to be my favorite. Topped it off with a delicious ice cream tempura. Highly recommend because of the great service & scrumptious food.
Came for lunch with a party of four, was seated right away but the table was sticky – not the kind of sticky because someone spilled soda on it but the grease kind of sticky that doesn't get wiped with water. Our napkins stuck to the table because of it. I dont know what was going on.
The lunch menu is your typical japanese lunch – sushi options, rolls, teriyaki bentos, etc.
Chicken udon: can't really go wrong with this one, but I did wish there was vegetables in the udon other than just a couple mushroom slices.
Yakisoba: my friend liked it just fine, no other comments
Shushi lunch: typical sushi – not eye opening-ly fresh
I'm not sure if I'd come to eat in person again, maybe i'll order take out sometime, but there are other options around the area.
I was in the area with a sushi craving and passed by Mottsu and figured I give it a shot. In hindsight, I should just stick to the places I know.
Opted for a lunch special and got two rolls: spicy tuna and shrimp tempura.
Underwhelming to say the least. You don't get that many pieces per roll and, luckily, you can't screw up a shrimp tempura roll so that was decent; however, the spicy tuna roll didn't taste fresh. They also cut the tuna poorly, leaving tons of fat (white lines) in the roll which makes it a lot more chewy than it should.
Service was slow as well for an empty dining room.
Also, the sushi bar is oddly designed. You'd want the sushi bar at least at eye level for observation purposes. The sushi chefs with a minimal language barrier can also converse with guests and answer any questions. At Mottsu, you're staring into marble and the sushi chefs kind of tower over you. Not really intuitive.
I would overlook all of my gripes if the food was on par, but that wasn't the case. Won't be returning.
Sushi, sushi, sushi!
After getting a wee bit tipsy down at Botanica, Mottsu was just what we needed. A quaint, but spacious Japanese joint with no wait on a Friday night. The service was friendly and fast and all of the rolls were delectable.
Mottsu seems like a place that gets busy with take out orders, but you know it's good if everyone is ordering from there.
Was convinced to order from here by a friend and was less than excited because of the 3 star rating. I couldn't have been more wrong. The rolls were some of the best I've tried in NYC. The must order is the soho roll, has a hint of truffle oil on top and is really amazing. Everything else is delicious too, all the rolls are well made and the fish is fresh. Will be back soon!
Slow service and i just dont think it tasted very good or fresh. I have had much better. The sushi and sashimi platter for 50 had sushi pieces that tasted like boxed sushi.
Japanese food is one of my favorite cuisines and I've been to many Japanese restaurants within my lifetime. Sadly this place just didn't cut it, It's a small and humble space but my brother and I were the only ones eating here towards the end of our meal. It looks like they do a lot of take-out orders, but honestly their food was mediocre, and not as good as I was hoping.
The mushroom soup I got was served lukewarm, the Dragon Roll was small and you could tell the ingredients weren't very fresh. The handroll, salmon and avocado, had the salmon sliced in cubes (it's supposed to be thinly sliced) and two feeble strands of avocado. My brother's Nabe Yaki Udon was redeemable, but overall below average food. There are a lot of better places than this one, especially in New York. Was fairly disappointed and had to pay more than what I wanted, not coming back anytime soon.
Came in for the Yelp deal.
Ordered the miso soup, special toro roll and spicy tuna. Service was good and very pleasant. Food came out quickly and was fresh. They did however forget my soup. I liked the special roll with the spicy jalapeños, the tuna hand roll was average and not very spicy.
Decent place but could have been better.
