The one and seemingly only bagel shop in my new hood…and it's decent.
Mr. Bagel is bare essentials. I don't know if I would trust the lox here (didn't see anyone order them and they were just sitting out in the deli case).
We arrived at around noon on Saturday and they only had two kinds of bagels ready (plain and sesame). LAME.
So Rus and I both got plain bagels with scallion cream cheese.
They were pretty tasty. The bagels are thick and cakey.
Pros: Not overpriced, decent bagels, lots of beverage options.
Cons: Not enough stock of bagels, spreads are not displayed, takes forever to get your order. The iced coffee, lox and refrigeration are all questionable.
Will I go again? Yes.
Do I secretly hope that some bougy, overpriced bagel shop opens up soon? Yes.
A step up from a Dunkin Donuts bagel but nowhere near as good as a true NYC bagel like Ess-a-Bagel.
Came around 9:15 on a Sunday and there was a small line but nothing crazy, it took almost 20 min to get out of there though, which seemed a little excessive.
There wasn't much rhyme or reason to the line after you ordered so I was worried about getting the right stuff when we checked out.
Our 2 breakfast sandwiches and 2 bagels with cream cheese were all correct in the end though, so it all worked out fine.
It is definitely the most convenient non-chain to go to when in the area for us so I'd probably go back!
The food is okay, but what really struck me was the service.
I ordered a Ham,egg, and cheese sandwich (which was delicious) for the record, and a medium (16 oz) coffee.
I figured you had to pay for everything first, so I wanted to pay for the coffee before I got it. But the guy didn't understand me and ended up arguing with me over something that wasn't even an issue!
I'll think twice about stopping here when I'm back in town….
I give Mr. Bagel 3 & 1/2 stars. It's a decent bagel store. Although they aren't authentic bagels, they are good nonetheless and make them on premises. It gets crowded in the early hours obviously. They close early. They can make a lot more business if they stayed open a little longer. When the guy in the back is making the bagels, he keeps the door open. Not very sanitary, especially in the warmer months. They have delicious muffins. The french toast and cranberry and orange are the best. They don't carry large quantities of what they sell. Be it bagels, muffins, etc. Their egg salad is yummy. The guys that work there are…uhh..irritating. Went there yesterday to get my usual egg salad and tomato on a bagel. One guy asked if I wanted jalapeno on it. I thought it was a good idea so I said yes. He said "You sure? It's hot. Hot like you.". Ugh! When I got to my parents place and opened up the sandwich, there was no tomato. Just jalapeno. That's what happens when you flirt with customers. You forget the tomato. I didn't feel like going back. Not worth it to me. Not too many bagel places in the area so Mr. Bagel will do if a craving is there.
