What can be said about a chinese joint where they serve fried chicken and french fries? Simply: Blech.

This place is passable only if you have an intense craving for Chinese food and you don't want to take a 5 minute ride over to Prince Street to get the real deal. C'mon! Great Asian food is a hop skip and a jump away. Don't settle for this.

I've eaten here a few times over the years and nothing in particular was very good or notable. The wonton soup is essentially flavorless, the meat and noodle dishes have a uniform, heavy, somewhat greasy sauce on them, and the egg rolls drip nasty globs of oil.

When you pull up in the parking lot to this place, ask yourself if it's really worth it to sacrifice taste and quality just to get hot, below average Chinese food in your belly. If you think it over, I'm sure you'll agree that you're better off elsewhere.

You may be asking, who in their right mind would want to go to a standard run-of-the-mill Chinese takeout restaurant when you have an abundant choice of Chinese restaurants in Flushing (Main St., Roosevelt Ave., Prince St., etc.)? Well, storms were torrential, the rain pouring down, or might I say, sideways from the wind. I was working in the area and chose convenience over a satisfying meal (Mr. Chan's is located in a large parking lot with several other stores vs. parking at the municipal in Flushing and running in the streets).

I got there around 1:20 PM and the place was pretty crowded with 8-12 people, some sitting at the ~5 tables while others were waiting for pickup. I quickly scanned the menu and decided to go with my staple choice of Beef & Broccoli ($5.50), which pretty sums up if a take out is hit-or-miss. Brown rice was available for no extra charge, which I also took advantage of. It took about 6-7 minutes for my meal to be ready, which I paid $5.50 + tax = $5.96, and was on my way back to the office. It took about 10 minutes to get back to the office, and my food was still very hot upon opening the white styrofoam tray.

I was glad to see that they put one staple near the front in order to reduce the risk of it opening during transit. Portions were average (see photo), neither generous nor skimpy. The flavors were pretty standard here, beef was tender, and the broccoli was fresh and had a nice crunch. (You have to be really bad to mess this dish up.) My only dislike was that the brown sauce was slightly darker than expected, and it was also slightly oily than the norm. The flavors were very familiar, yet ever so slightly off. I just couldn't quite figure out what it was. Grease perhaps? I was a bit bored so I also had a chance to count the number of broccoli and beef: 15 thin slices of beef, 10 small-to-medium sized broccoli florets. The brown rice was cooked as intended, not too hard nor too mushy.

For $5.96 with no can of soda, egg roll, or soup, I found prices to be on the higher side. With high prices, no extras, moderate portions, and subpar flavors, I don't think I'll be coming here again until they decide to change their lunch specials to actually include something with your order (soda or egg roll at the least). Better yet, I'll remind myself to just go to Flushing instead for some good eats.

On their takeout menu, it says "Winner of 2007 Best Take Out". It puzzles me what kind of food competition that was. Were there only 2 competitors? Definitely not a hit in my book.

One of my local chinese spots close to one of my favorite food shopping spots, Pathmark.  Food is good and nothing spectacular.
