Hate writing bad reviews but I'm a Yelper and my job is to give the most accurate review and that's what I vowed to do.
With that being said, this place is not great at all. Most of these reviews on here are very accurate.
The customer service is so-so. The owner is rude as ever.
Now the food: I ordered steak and onions and it was so disgusting. How do you burn plantains and better yet serve it? I think another Yelper asked the same thing? For the food to be that pricey, I feel as though it deserves to starkest taste good.
The avocado they gave me that came with the meal was so dry and stale. And everyone knows I love me some avocado.
The steak had no flavor. I had to season it myself and then eat it.
What a waste of money.
I wouldn't recommend at all
Decided to order from MR. Pollo on a lazy Saturday night. It was a nice change from the normal take out options.
We placed an order for delivery and they were really pleasant on the phone , letting us know that the order would be about 40 minutes or so. They were right on time if not a few minutes early.
My GF got the 1/2 chicken platter that came with a side salad and rice. She enjoyed her meal and said that the rice was really good and the chicken was good too but a little dry.
I on the other hand let my inner fat kid out and got the Typical platter. It has grilled beef that was seasoned perfectly, rice and beans (with a nice hunk of pork in the beans), a fried egg, a sweet plantain and a monster Chicharon. (that's pork rind for those not in the know) It was a two whole pieces not the little nuggets so I was able to tear into it like a caveman…..a fat kid cave man.
I will definitely be back to this place The service was great and the food was even better. I recommend this place to anyone who like good food at a great price, you won't be disappointed.
This place is close to my old Queens condo and I have eaten here over 6 times when in NYC.
This restaurant is a pure mom & pop operation, and the food is home cooking.
The chicken, beans and rice are so good that if they were able to franchise this concept, they could become multi-millionaires overnight. I have not found a taste as good anywhere in California, especially at such a great price. They are sitting on a gold-mine and don't know it.
Service is mediocre–the woman, (possibly owner) who is mainly there almost seems angry at you sometimes, especially if you come in while she is trying to do paperwork at one of the tables. The place has no personality, is kind of depressing, small, and I take it home most of the time.
If you are coming here–it's for the food. That's it!
Mostly bad if you know what the dishes should taste like. I was most disappointed with my $3.75 side of sorry-looking, pasty white arepa with a limp link of chorizo thrown in it. Whatever dirty thought you might be imagining right now, it was that bad x2. My colleagues thought their other dishes and platters were fine, but I think this restaurant has passed the point of redemption with me. Scratching off another potential delivery spot in the sad, wasteland of a work neighborhood that is Whitestone. (Date of meal: April 2015)
A couple of my friends around Whitestone have kept on telling me how great this place was and how awesome the food was, so my buddy and I finally stopped by today and got some food to go.
The inside of the place is nothing to write home about. A few tables and chairs and some decorations and signs along the walls. The place is kept immaculate though, even behind the counter. The lady behind the counter was also really nice and even added both of us to their delivery system, so whenever we'd call, they have all our info ready to go.
Since it was my first time in the place, I went with what my friend had, which was the Mountain Platter. The name definitely fits the plate, cause they give you a shit ton of food. My friend got the chopped meat and I got it grilled. Basically, they give you everything in this platter: beef, eggs, beans, pork rind, sweet potato, sweet plantain, rice, avocado and a corn cake. My friend explained to me that you have to chop everything into pieces and add the bean stew to it and mix it all up. At first glance, I thought this might be bad, but turns out, it was AMAZINGLY good. With every bite you taste a little bit of the egg, bean, pork, plantain, avocado, etc. I was really surprised that Colombian food tasted this good!! Neither me or my friend could finish the whole platter and both of us had decent sized leftovers for the next day.
If you are from Whitestone or Northern Queens in general, definitely try this place out! If you are sick of the same old routine of italian, greek, chinese, japanese, pizza rotation, definitely check this place out. Cheap prices, good eats – can't go wrong.
