BEST korean for the money west of FT Lee, very unassuming place, welcoming interior, great friendly staff, really nice great food and awesome service! lots to choose from, love the little side dishes with Kimchee, bean sprouts, , my wife and I shared the beef ribs had the Tofu with kimchi and grilled pork all very delicious.
We went here because of other Yelper's recommendation and they had decent reviews. It was a small place about 8-12 tables so its rather a small place. The waitress was nice to show us the menu, it wasn't a big menu at all. It had the typical Korean items on its menu. After decided we ordered the Bulgogi entree with rice and the Jap Chae noddles while my wife ordered the spicy seafood soup.
Can't comment on the soup but the Bulgogi tasted fine along with the noddles. It had a nice favor along with the preparation of the food. They had the typical Korean side dishes of Kimchi, fish cakes, and pickled cabbage. It was good service and food but I felt it was over priced for the food. 23 for the Bulgogi and 19 for the noodles was kind of pricey. The soup was average 12 dollars. They have lunch specials that is cheaper so go during lunch. I gave them 4 stars because the food was overpriced for dinner.
It's so very refreshing, to find a place with good – and authentic – Korean cuisine. Entering Mr. Tofu House, the first thing you notice is the fresh, clean lines of the dining area. Light and airy and walking that wonderful line between modern and traditional, the restaurant is comfortable, yet functional.
The menu, although not large in appearance, offers quite a lot, with the available combinations and options in most of the dishes. In addition, Mr. Tofu House offers the traditional Korean small-dish appetizers (banchan), complimentary with each meal. These range from the traditional kimchi (which Koreans enjoy at ALL meals), to black beans, to tiny dried fish, pickled cucumber salad, and more. We were also given steamed (scrambled) egg, in an earthenware bowl. A GREAT way to begin a meal!
My wife ordered the bibimbap, a combo dish containing fresh salad, mushrooms, a meat and fried egg on top and served with hot, steamed rice. The rice is mixed with the other ingredients in the bowl and tossed with gochujang, the traditional Korean spicy BBQ sauce. My daughter had the chaphae (sauteed cellophane noodles with veggies and beef), and I had kimchi tofu soup with beef. These were all incredibly good and all so authentically prepared.
If you're not familiar with Korean food, why not go there for lunch? It's a great way to try some superb food, and the service staff can help you choose something to start with. By the way – if you enjoy BBQ, Korean BBQ is some of the best. Mr. Tofu House is definitely worth the visit. Today was our first trip there. . . and we can't wait to go again!
Thank you tofu gods for bringing a tofu spot closer to home! We normally drive 45 minutes to either Fort Lee or Edison but now we only need to drive 15 to Mr. Tofu House. Score.
To get straight to the point, their soondubu jigae is the perfect fix. Why? Because the "Regular" spicy is the perfect amount of spicy for me and they don't screw me over on the protein to tofu ratio like other places we've been to. I went with the dumpling and he went with the beef. The spot we would go to in Fort Lee didn't have dumplings as an option so Mr. Tofu House is winning for me. Both tasted great.
We also ordered a kimchi scallion pancake: Not an oily/soggy mess like other places, perfect amount of crunch and came with a tasty dipping sauce.
All in all, thrilled with our first visit to Mr. Tofu House! We'll be back next week!
Solid soondubu. Glad there is one closer to Montclair now. I still favor SGD's crispy rice in stone bowl in East Hanover, but this place is closer to my stomping grounds. Milder in flavor and feels more homemade, for lack of a better word. The service was really friendly and they gave us a steamed egg casserole to try on the house. The restaurant itself is modern, bright, and clean even though the curb appeal of this unassuming strip mall in this area of Wayne may suggest otherwise.
We also had the seafood pancake which is doughier in texture than I would like, but that didn't stop us from polishing it off.
The spicy level is on the conservative side. I ordered mild, and barely tasted anything spicy, and I have a low tolerance for spicy food. As if all other places now, they serve kalbi but at an exorbitant price.
I would come back here.
Thanks yelper for introducing this gem to me. Love Korean food! It's a small restaurant located in a strip area between subway and Japanese restaurant with parking available. The service was friendly. Our waitress took her time going over the menu with us and recommended some non spicy dishes that are popular amongst customers esp. what kids like to eat.
For starters, we ordered fried pork and noodle dumplings. Then, the waitress brought us all the knickknack dishes such as calamari, Kim chi, fish patty, egg casserole, spicy pickled cucumbers. Free refills if you want so just ask! For main course, we had jap chae, which is potato noodles with veggies and beef stir fried with soy sauce. We also ordered their beef bulgogi served on hot sizzling skillet. I had also order seafood tofu soup. There are different kinds of tofu soup. You can order pork, beef, seafood, vegetable, or Kim chi soup…etc. There are 5 level of spice list: plain, mild, regular, hot, danger. When placing the soup order, you'll need to tell the waitress how spicy you want the soup.
Overall, the food was pricey but delicious. All 3 main course meal was served with white rice. We will definitely come back and try other dishes.
