First and foremost, I like Mr. Vino's Cucina because of the beer sitch. I've worked in similar shops like it, and I always rued that they never sold singles of the more niche beers. While Fairway has started to do the whole "make your own 6-pack," their selection is considerably more pedestrian. MVC had a few standby's like Ballast Point and Anderson Valley, along with a few other interesting midwest brewers I wasn't familiar with.
Their cheese counter is a little less wow-worthy. Some good showings, a Piave here, a Jasper Hill selection there, but nothing you couldn't find elsewhere. I was also surprised (and maybe a bit terrified) that they don't use cheese planes to sample out cheese but cut a small piece and hand it to you blade side out via paring knife.
Overall, it's a good stop on Austin Street. Their staff is a little more brusque than I would expect for a shop with these prices, but I'm more willing to blame that on the management for not observing/teaching their employees how to speak to customers.
I came here this evening to purchase cheese for the first time. I came in here a couple of months ago just to take a peak. Both times the staff were really friendly. They had a decent selection of cheese. I also love the variety of dressings and olive oil they have. This is a good place to have in the neighborhood. I enjoy supporting small business'. Not to mention, the prices are reasonable for such great quality cheese.
When I came in today to purchase some cheese for a road trip, everyone was extremely accommodating, and took the time to chat with me about artisan beers, and cheese. I was even offered a sample with a lovely piece of cheese on top. It happened to be the crackers that I was thinking of purchasing.
Thank you! 🙂
a solid new addition to Austin Street, Mr. Vino's Cucina is a tiny shop with a reasonably-sized inventory of gourmet/imported goods for your kitchen. and yes, they are the same people who run the adjoined liquor store (accessible via a passage in the back).
they've got an impressive array of jams, oils, syrups, chocolates, pasta, cheeses, cold cuts, and most importantly BEER! I was quite glad with this – while Forest Hills' supermarkets and delis usually do have pretty good beer selections, it's tougher to find single bottles of craft and import brews.
one of the friendly staffers came over to talk to me about various beers they had and made some recommendations. he seemed to know his stuff regarding beer, and wasn't pushy. I ended up purchasing two bottles of different IPAs, and enjoyed them both.
the prices are a little high for some products, but not that bad. also, consider the following and I think it's justified:
(1) you're coming here to buy higher-quality products anyway.
(2) Austin Street rents are ridiculous for small businesses.
(3) it's not another damned bank kiosk, pharmacy, or hair salon.
they also have pre-made as well as customizable gift baskets.
it's good to see a small business succeeding here and adding to the continually-improving atmosphere of Forest Hills. props to Mr. Vino for expanding into a much-needed niche here.
I like their sweet dry saucisson. I buy the one already sliced and packed in clear container. One container is around $5.50.
They have unique selection of grourmet food like Beer Cheese. I want to try all of their food!
The workers are friendly.
This place is great for pairing wines with cured meats and cheeses. The staff was awesome and very informative. I love a great aged cheese and wine pairing and this place had exactly what I requested!!!!
Cute little shop for picking up some interesting craft beers, cheeses and snacks. Some are ridiculously overpriced, but they have quite a bit that is fairly priced too.
Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. Every time we come in there is one guy who always comes over and helps us pick out a beer or two. Sometimes he can be a little pushy, but I think that's because he loves beer so much and just wants to tell you everything there is to know about each one (^_^);;;;
Have not bought cheese here yet but they seem to have a very good variety. They also have several different types of interestingly flavored chocolate bars too. Yum!
Mr. Vino's Cucina is one of those small speciality foodie store that I wish I have in my neighbourhood.
Here you can pick up cheese, cured meat, condiments and beers. For a small store this size, I was pleasantly surprised by the beers they carried both local and import selection of different beer styles.
Since I was staying in Forest Hill while visiting, it was convenient for some last minute purchase for some drinking and snacking at "home".
Our friend was raving about this "while labeled" beer called "Lunch" that we had to try at Mr. Vino's Cucina. We walked in at 9:40pm and Eric asked if we were looking for "Lunch". He had just sold thee last bottle 30 min ago – Nooooo!
Eric (you can find him on FB at "Eric I The Beer Guy") is a beer connoisseur. He just LOVES beer and knows everything about it. He has his favorites but will help anyone out according to their tastes. My husband went in for Flavorful Hoppy, I went in for Fruity and Sour. We both found something.
Roberto wanted in on the action too so he provided us with Baked good samples, rainbow cookies to be exact – Delicious! Random, but I purchased a 1/2lb of Wasabi peas for $2.50 – that's really affordable right, compared to Kasugai.
You can find all sorts of bougy stuff here: Beers, coffee, cheeses, smoked salmon, etc.
I love this place, will be visiting more often!
