  1. A half a block away from the heart of the MeatPacking District, the restaurant is located downstairs, and may be easily missed if you are not paying attention.

We were seated right in the front, right by the front door, and next to the little knee wall, where the staff opened up and poured the wine.

Our waiter was friendly and really helpful.

Menu is set up in a unique fashion, where each dish can be ordered small, medium or large (so individual, or some form of sharing.

Food – We ordered a number of plates to hare:
Focaccia Bread with two dipping oils – great start to the meal.
Smoked Salmon – Salmon was good, however the bread they served with it was a little too smoky for me.
Meatballs – Very good – they disappeared as soon as they got to the table.
Pasta with Bolognese sauce – Decent portion, and nice flavor.
Ravioli with pesto – really good flavor for the ravioli and the pesto sauce.
Gnocchi – Ok, very bland and not much flavor.  Plus very dense, not light and fluffy as i like my Gnocchi!
Black Truffle Cheesecake – I didn't have any, however was told that this was ok.  Also, it's a special off the menu, so the $30+ price for a small piece is easy to miss.

Overall food was decent, service was good, however a basement restaurant, charging higher prices – i expected more.  Even the walkway to the back of the restaurant had the the utility meters exposed, and behind a gated area, lit up like it was something to have on display.  Things like this can be rustic and charming, however it wasn't.

  2. Came here with my wife for pre-dinner drinks before my father-in-law's birthday dinner, and thoroughly enjoyed the wine and appetizers I sampled. I would definitely come back here for dinner!

FOOD: every dish comes in small (to taste), medium (dish for one), and large (dish to share with several people), which makes it easy to taste more of what they have to offer. As we were headed to dinner, we kept it light and ordered a small portion of the prosciutto and burrata on focaccia and the meatballs. Everything was excellent. The meatballs were not overcooked, the prosciutto was fresh, and the burrata was deliciously creamy. I can't wait to try their salmon and ravioli dishes!

DRINKS: there is no shortage of selections no matter what kind of wine you fancy. Every option is available by the glass or bottle, so you will not be limited by the few selections offered by the glass as you would in many other establishments. I went with a Barbaresco (you can't go wrong there), and did not regret my decision in the least. They also provide you with a good pour, so you will not be paying out $12-$15 (and up for the more expensive wines) for a tiny sip.

PRICES: these prices are more on the high end scale because that is what is offered. For example, they offer an incredibly expensive Brunello di Montalcino, and having just returned from Italy back in August where we purchased a case of 6 bottles of this exact wine, we can tell you that it is an expensive wine. The food is also more pricey than at a typical wine bar, but judging from the dishes we tasted on this visit, it's worth it. Still, be aware that this is a more expensive outing than one would normally have at a "typical" wine bar or restaurant.

  3. This place is supppeeerrr awesome!!

Definitely has a cozy and intimate feel when you walk in.

My friend and I came for dinner with a reservation and were promptly seated.

We had quite a few questions about the menu, since everything is S / M / L and the waitress was excellent in describing quite specifically the amounts of each dish so we knew exactly what we were ordering. She recommended to go with a larger size of a couple dishes and she ended up being right – the portions were perfect.

We had the small san daniele's miracle which was served either open, or they offered to sandwich it and cut it in half. The prosciutto on this sandwich was AMAZING. The foccacia was soft and salty and buttery….it was incredible.

Then we had medium ravioli cacio e pepe which was also a 10. The filling in the ravioli was subtle and peppery, and the green pea puree was incredible.

Next was the medium polpetta which were served with a few sauces, all of which we gobbled up. They were super tender and tasty.

Last was the medium gnocchi which had a very small amount of sausage, but was complimented nicely with the zucchini and parmesan.

We chose some pricey wine at $20 and $18 per glass, but it was well worth it to try glasses you'd commonly have to have by the bottle. We each ended up having 3 glasses – which we totally should have just gotten a bottle but oh well.

Service was friendly and descriptive and I will absolutely come back to try the other offerings on the menu!!

  4. The food was excellent, but I found it a bit expensive.  They also cater to dietary restrictions,  which is great! I got the gnocchi with vodka sauce, half portion, and the lamb half portion. I also tried a non-dairy version of the gnocchi (different sauce) and the chicken. Everything was really delicious. The lamb rib chop (just one in the half portion) came with this black bread with a cheese sauce. I really liked the cheese sauce but my friends didn't. Two people ordered the tuna tartare. It was served covered with this plastic-looking and burnt-smelling rice paper wrapper that was shaped into a hard dome and place to cover the tuna tartare.  It made no sense at all. However I'm told the actual tuna was great.

Family style is more economical here,  but the friends I went with didn't want to do family style so we all got our own dishes. I'd recommend family style though.

  5. Food is wonderful.. Romantic setting.
Cache de Pepe is the best!
    Visit rather than take-out….
Ordered meatballs… Smokey flavor, not a fav
Pappardelle absolutely delicious. Take-out portion was minuscule …. So disappointed  because it was so tasty!

  6. I usually will pull back stars for first visit but this place was amazing from start to finish. Almost missed it as down in basement of building . We were welcomed warmly to this romantic/intimate place.

They do small/medium and large plates of everything.  Like to share so got three small plates except lamb so had enough for two.

From the flavorful San Daniele prosciutto with freshly made bread and perfectly sliced tomato and just the right amount cheese.  Cook cut it in half so could share.

The risotto with Osso bucco was finished table side by pouring over the sauce and mixing up the entire dish.  It was nicely cooked and this is famously dish that gets chefs kicked off top chef and I have bad versions at stk downtown.

The Polpetta otherwise known as best meat ball ever due to smoky and spicy taste done by combination of sausage and pancetta.

They changed out the chanterelles for oysters without missing  a beat in the lamb.  It was cooked to perfect redness.  Oysters bought at farmers market reminded my better half of wild mushrooms back in the day.

Did not examine wine list much but leans on Italians so lovers of oaky chard are out of luck but in thE know waiter directed us to nice wine that had full body to spare.

I will come back to try the dishes I did not try and eat the lamb and Polpetta again.  Those going to la sirena should trek here.

  7. There comes a time when a restaurant exceeds my expectations and last night this place did just that.  From the moment I walked in until I left this restaurant they went above and beyond and delivered an incredible meal with outstanding service.  Why I never knew about this place is a shame because I could have been enjoying this place a lot longer.

I ordered almost everything on the menu and every time a new dish arrived I had so much excitement because I knew each dish was going to be delicious.  I've attached pictures to show you some of the great dishes.  If you want a great meal with delicious wine and dessert then this is the place to check out.  You won't be disappointed until the meal is over because you'll want more.  To the staff and cooking crew I applaud all of you!!

    I'll be back for sure!

  8. I loved this place. We were early to meet friends so sat for a glass of wine at the bar first – I asked for a crisp, refreshing white and the bartender nailed it first time. Our friend had booked a small back room ('the library'?) which was so lovely and cosy and private. The room had two comfy leather sofas at right angles with a small table – you could probably fit 6 people but it might be a bit cramped, especially when the food starts coming out. The food was really very good – the hibiscus risotto and the ravioli stood out for me. We had some different red wines with dinner and again the recommendations were perfectly on point, the wine was delicious and a bit different. I will definitely be back to eat and drink more.
