This place is incredible. I've been meaning to come here for the longest time, but either never got out of work on time on a weeknight or tried to avoid it on weekends due to other reviews saying it gets packed in here.
I stopped by in the afternoon of a weekday when I had the day off. I didn't even know where to start when I walked in. You're immediately overwhelmed by a large amount of homemade sausages, prosciutto legs, other charcuteries everywhere.
I didn't know what to get, so I looked around while I was waiting to be next. The guys are pretty helpful in letting you know what they have to offer and all the flavors you are to expect from your choices.
I ended up bringing home:
– goose pastrami – amazing! unlike anything I've ever had. The perfect ring of fat around the flavorful meat. Just melts in your mouth.
– homemade prosciutto – wasn't the best I've had. But I'd definitely eat it again. Good amount of fat. Delicious with some sliced beefsteak tomatoes, basil and mozzarella
– jalapeno sausages – LOVED these. I put them in my shrimp boil. They were SO flavorful and offered the perfect amount of spice without being too overwhelming. Definitely not mild. Expect some heat. They are already pre-cooked, so you only really need to heat it up – whether it's on the grill, in a seafood boil, or chopped up for an omelette like the butcher recommended.
– garlic rolled bacon – my favorite! I could probably eat the entire roll, but since I live by myself.. I only got 1/4 pound. It was clearly not enough. Next time, I am skipping on the other items and just getting this. It's already cooked and ready to eat. If you like, you can crisp it up in the pan quickly.
– pork pate – pretty good, but portion is too large. Wish they sold it in a half size. The consistency is a little gelatinous, but if you spread it more.. it will taste great.
Holy Crapolas. If you don't have any strict dietary restrictions, please do yourself a favor – run to Muncan as soon as you can. Being a veggie lover, I start to salivate the moment I step inside the store. Wondering how much stuff I can get away with before my husband start to chide me, on being too ambitious, on attempting once again to sample the whole store on our third visit.
Muncan is a little heaven of charcuterie, cold cuts, imported goods and some ready to eat items. Their salami, goose and duck pastrami are delicious, anything meat roll that is sitting on top of the cold storage is fresh and also delicious. The chicharron…. OMG. If you are skeptical, then ask for a piece of this warm, crackling goodness. We can't be friends if you think this stuff ain't yummy. I have seen a Filipino lady purchasing 5 pounds of those, that's telling.
The bacon here are quite interesting. The tarska is Andrew Zimmerman's favorite if you watched his show. I would recommend skipping the regular smoked bacon and get from double smoked or of any caliber above that. Don't cook it the way you do with regular supermarket bacon, it will end up being overcooked – too dry and salty. Cut the time and adjust the flame accordingly.
The only thing so far that I wouldn't order again for myself is their prosciutto. Too salty for my taste.
The staff here are efficient and will gladly provide samples of the cuts if requested. The manager/owner? of the store is always welcoming, sometimes offering samples to the people waiting in line. He wears a smile for his customers.
My father is somewhat of a meat-shop connoisseur and has toured the West Coast looking for authentic and unique carnivore experiences. He also watches the food channel and whenever they feature something interesting in my neck of the woods, he passes it along.
This is how I came upon Muncan Food Corp and boy do I owe my dad for this one! Tracking down the shop in Astoria, opening the door, my mouth immediately started to water. Dried, cured and freshly prepared meats of all shapes, sizes, flavors and animals hung around in a dizzying array of delicious scents.
Not only was their selection impressive, they are all house made AND the staff were incredibly friendly and generous offering us a taste of whatever caught our interest. My boyfriend was in heaven and I think they have just found themselves a couple new regular customers despite living in Brooklyn – the trip is worth it!
Very pleased to find this place. I was in need of some Kielbasa and couldn't make it to Greenpoint. Picked up some Kielbasa and also some Euro style franks. Franks were great! Kielbasa was good. Fantastic service-extremely nice people. Knocked off a star because it could be a little less cost; however, I'll be back.
This place is incredible. It is an authentic Romanian butchery/dried meat shop. We went on a Saturday morning, and he place was packed. We actually ended up having to wait about half an hour to be waited on, but it was totally worth it. There are tons of different kind of sausages, sliced meats, and fried treats. As we were waiting, the put out a steaming slab of pork belly that we had to try! It was to die for! Everything we got was super tasty and some were verrrry interesting! My favorite might be the duck prosciutto! We left the shop smelling smokey with tons of treats in hand! Can't wait to visit this place again on my next trip to Astoria!
Waking up and frantically realizing I had to get a christmas gift for the family gourmand, I found this place on yelp (reasonably close from the UES) and came with a loose-ish shopping list and about $35.
I had high expectations (another reviewer pointed me towards the $8.50 a pound lamb prosciutto) and Muncan's exceeded them. From the moment I walked in and saw the three levels of cured meat hanging from the ceiling, the 10 types of salted bacon, and the sausages from all part of the Balkans.
The staff was very helpful and accommodating of my indecision. I ended up getting some pancetta, some njeguska sausage (which is similar to a spicy chorizo in flavor), and lamb prosciutto. All of them were smash hits; impressive for what I assume is a mostly made-in-house selection. I'm going to go back, it's a question of when. And how much sausage I can fit on the train.
Meat Mecca. The smell of the cured meats as you walk in is absolutely overwhelming. The selection is overwhelming, But fortunately, the service is very friendly and quick. Take a number when you walk in and they'll serve you soon.
Unfortunately, the sheer number of choices overwhelmed me, and I only picked up some chicarones and the tarska bacon. Both were excellent. The chicharones were not too oily, not too salty. The tarska bacon was very flavorful, with interesting texture contrast between the outside and the tender insides. You could even detect the metallic taste of blood on the outer area of the strips.
Picked up a bottle of Elderberry Fanta on my way out too. It's unfortunate that this is so far out of my way.
This place is an absolute blessing. The service is impeccable, and the staff will let you try any of their meats for free. And what meat selection! If you can think of it, Muncan will have it. I particularly recommend their sausages, and the chicharron was superb – crispy exterior, juicy pork in the center. If you ever have people over who appreciate delicious cuts, this is the place to go.
