im wary of irish bars, they can be crazy packed, bro-y and full of bud lights. but this one, i walked in and immediately felt a sense of ease. relaxed well spaced environment to get dinner. and pretty reasonable prices too. if you wanted to just nibble on fries its like 2.50 for a small. i like food and drink together more and more at bars. hamburger with onion rings, like 9 bucks and another 2.50 or so for a side caesar salad. onion rings were crackkk…well fried and not those big, horomonal onions. i love putting em in my burger which was good but not life changing or anything. it definitely needs ketchup and mustard. salad was dronched in dressing but i nommed it up. i was hungry and i think a couple drinks makes the food more exciting than it actually is. sometimes food is better because ur with good friends in a warm environment , and so ur mood (and hunger pangs) makes it all the more satisfying.
Murphy's feels like one of those throwback gritty downtown bars. There's no glitz, no glamour, no sign of Wall Street execs — just your everyday average Joe's looking for a drink and looking for a quiet time at the bar. I've only been here once after work with some co-workers on a weekday at 5pm and it was relatively quiet inside with a few patrons. The tavern was pretty spacious and we sat in the back.
There was nothing extraordinary about this tavern, but they did have an extensive happy hour menu, which consisted of many beers and cocktails. We ended up ordering some food, wings and calamari, from the menu as well. The wings were good and everyone at our table loved them, but the calamari was not edible to most of my coworkers. It was basically like chewing a rubberband, so skip that dish at happy hour.
Other than those observations, the waitress was attentive and there were quite a few TVs inside for anyone just looking to relax and catch up on the day in sports.
I walked in at 4pm on humpday- I was waiting for an old friend who was bringing her kids to meet me, so I didn't want to wait for her where I couldn't quickly jet out of upon her arrival.
Drinks are cheap, so that's a sweet find in the neighborhood but I'm never coming back after my last experience. My second time was a couple weeks later – it was perfect bc my plans had changed and I decided to go meet my SO who works right around the corner.
It has nothing to do with their service, but I was appalled to find that some of the patrons here were blatantly racist. It's almost 2016, and hearing someone calling me a banana and making pretentious remarks, e.g., that the white person sitting in front of me was making a huge mistake with an inferior Asian was literally one of the most shocking and disappointing experiences. It's happened before, but it's not a common occurrence, especially not in NYC – the melting pot of the country. The 2 star is still well deserved. Service is fine, but once it gets crowded, no one came to the table and I was dancing my way to get anyone's attention for my next drink.
Anyway, the bathroom isn't all that clean and the toilet is completely deformed – the seat's coming off about 9 inches. The food smelt weird, as did the rest of the restaurant. A strange musk was omnipresent both times I've frequented this ancient bar.
Definitely needs a face lift. There's an ATM near the entrance, and if you're game for cheap drinks with a "eff the atmosphere, I'm not on a date!" kind of humpday, this is the perfect spot for you. Needless to say, I won't be back.
Well, they had Yuengling, and the bartender was lovely. And the crowd was a people-watcher's dream. So win win win!
Literally stopped by for one drink. Was a bit disappointed that there was no pong upstairs
Service = awesome. Prices = awesome. Food & Drinks = awesome.
I work in FiDi, just a few blocks away and was introduced to Murphy's by my Uncle who not only works in the area, but has been coming to the bar for nearly a decade. Although my Uncle's go to bartender (whom he raves about) wasn't there that night, our waitress was great – incredibly friendly and fast service.
I usually don't order wine unless I am at a wine bar or Italian restaurant where I know I will be given my grapes in a proper glass – otherwise I get skeeved out at the small thick rimmed glass supplied with. The later mentioned glassware is usually what dive bars/taverns serve; however, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Murphy's gave me wine in a decent wine glass. Wine snobbery aside…..
Buffalo flavored chicken tenders, quesadillas and warm pretzels are all solid selections. The sauce served with the pretzels is this crazy delicious but definitely super unhealthy concoction of jalapeno, cheese and beer. Wild stuff. Love this place.
Less sketchy, more busy and less financebro-y (although maybe i just got lucky) than White Horse Tavern. Beer selection is a bit nicer too and a $5 happy hour that runs until 8. Great place.
Really enjoyed this spot! After doing the tourist thing to Ellis Island and lady liberty we were hungry and wanted to get out of the cold wind chill and stumbled upon Murphy's Tavern. Bartenders are def entertaining and welcoming. It is a bit of a dive but with great character, nice tap selection and menu with various pub items.
We were informed of the wing Wednesday special, 60¢/wing. Together we ordered 12 wings, the Irish old fashioned for my husband and the IPA for myself. The Buffalo wings were nice, hot and crispy and paired with a nice blue cheese and celery sticks. The rosemary garlic wings were also dynamite. They were very crispy and had a great subtle rosemary flavor.
This was about the most reasonable prices we have paid so far here in NYC. Being so close to the ferry I was pleasantly surprised and pleased to find this spot. A townie and local spot, this was great! I can easily give 5 stars for the wings and quick, great service. I think we paid some $30 for 2 rounds of drinks and wings. Cheers!
