O.G. Korean.
Brought my out-of-town parents to Myung San based on stereotypes of it being a no-frills joint with loud ahjussis and free-flowing soju. They were right. Ultimately, it was a down-home restaurant with homemade quality food – no better, no worse.
You know a place is old school when the banchan includes spicy raw blue crab.
Kalguksu was thick and toothy, and thankfully less salty than Japanese and Chinese noodle joints tend to offer. Family enjoyed their spicy seafood stews and doenjang jjigae, though they mentioned that they could probably whip this up themselves if they had the time. Alternatively, bulgogi was actually pretty poor – thin, dry, and somewhat overcooked.
Best experience was watching the 2015 NLCS between the Mets and Dodgers on the big screen, with the game narrated by drunk Korean dudes for the benefit of their wives.
Next stop, Sik Gaek for some stupid human tricks!
This is one of your typical Korean restaurants. The service was friendly and was unique because it seemed most of the patrons were on friendly terms with the waiting staff, to the point where our waitress was enjoying a beer at their table.
The menu can be a bit overwhelming because the English translations of the food do not do the dishes justice. If you are craving something specific, just ask your server and they will recommend something. They do stock up on the complimentary banchan, which is always a plus.
Alcohol selection: Kloud, Hite, Coors, various Soju, etc,
My friends and I arrived on a Tuesday afternoon and comfortably enjoyed our time and drinks without being hassled by the staff.
The food did not blow me away, but it was satisfying and definitely a good experience.
It was OK. Not the best Korean food I've had.
We came here for lunch on a weekday and ordered their bulgogi and their daengjiang jigae (soy bean paste soup).
Both tasted decent and their side dishes were very fresh however the bulgogi we were served were all tiny little pieces like if they were shredded. I looked at the people next to us who also got bulgogi and their beef looked was all fully sized pieces. So I felt like they probably served us some of the left over ones. And it was also way too sweet.
Other than that service was ok. There are just way too many good Korean restaurants in flushing for me to come back to this one again and give them another chance.
I think this is the best Korean food I've had so far in NYC, simply for the authenticity of the food. There's nothing really flashy or corporate about this place, yet this humble hole in the wall stays true to the Korean staple foods and are so expertly executed.
They have all the foods you'd expect to find in home style cooking, Kalgooksu, (kind of like a Korean chicken noodle soup), galbi tang (beef short rib soup), yukaejang (shredded beef soup), tteok mandu gook (dumpling soup) etc…
Pretty much all their banchans (side dishes) were on point. There wasn't a single one I didn't like. They're not cheap or stingy with the sides either. They bring out the good stuff like the preserved little fish and potatoes. From the sides to the dishes, to the barley water, everything here tastes like it was made with love.
God bless you Myung San. God bless your sweet soul. They're not about that hype, they're just making some true and real Korean food. Stay trill, Myung San. Geez, even the big waiter who looked like a G had the biggest smile on his face.
Someone is doing something right here.
