This is our goto sushi place in Long Beach, the food is good and the service is good as well. My fiancé loves all of there special roles and I love the food as well. We order delivery more then we actually goto the location and usually they deliver within 45 minutes which I find to be the average time in long beach. I would recommend this place to people looking for good sushi in Long Beach.
I just love this place and wish it were closer to me. Sure this place serves up some fresh sushi/sashimi and tasty rolls at a reasonable price, but what gets me is the service and how kid friendly it is. We brought our two young kids to this place for an early dinner to avoid the crowd. It was still fairly busy with no lines though.
We sat down and ordered several rolls, sashimi, and yakisoba. Our food came promptly and everything was delicious and fresh. The waitresses and especially one of the owners (grandma-type) were so friendly and kept our kids entertained the whole time. The owner even had training chopsticks held together with rubberband and pocky sticks when the kids finished their food. Great food with great service that made you feel like part of a family. What a contrast to the popular Long Island sushi restaurant (with several branches) that serves up great sushi but has very impersonal service and no high chairs.
Since Kotobuki in Roslyn (yelp.com/biz/kotobuki-re…), my favorite Japanese restaurant in Nassau County, is temporarily closed for renovation and while I found their other locations in Babylon and Hauppauge to be excellent as well, they were too far of a drive for me compared to Nagahama, which is only a 25 minute drive from my home tops, which is only five minutes longer than driving from my home to Kotobuki in Roslyn. I also chose to go to Nagahama as I ate there a few times in the past and found it to be excellent! Since I wanted to eat home, I ordered take out. I called at 4:30PM, right at opening and got an excellent first impression, as I found the gentleman who took my call to be friendly, professional, and eager to please! Since I checked the menu, I knew that I wanted the Sashimi and Sushi Platter for $24.50, which is basically the same as Kotobuki and a Spicy Tuna Roll, for $6.75. Since I was unsure of the type of sushi they used on the Sashimi and Sushi Platter, the gentleman on the phone was happy to answer my question and he showed further concern, as he wanted to make sure he was able to accommodate my allergies and preferences. Lucky for me, I was able to eat everything on the platter and for the sushi included on the platter, I chose a Salmon Roll. As we were about to end the call, I also asked him about parking and he was very informative, as he told me that I would easily be able to park in the free parking lot across the street. Twenty-five minutes later, I arrived at Nagahama, ready to pick up my food. Inside, I found Nagahama to be as small and cramped as a Tokyo subway car, but still immaculate and pleasant. I was greeted by two hosts as well as a hostess, who was the mother of the owner, based on remembering her from a previous visit, who were very friendly, welcoming, and efficient. While I did not dine in on this visit, I found that when I dined in, the service was also very friendly and efficient. The total for my food came out to about $33 in change, which is very reasonable for the quality and portion size. When I got home, I found my dinner to be delicious. I first tucked into the Sashimi and Sushi Platter, which had three large pieces of pristine salmon sashimi, which had a satiny sheen and buttery mouth feel, three pieces of tuna sashimi, which had a soft and moist texture and was meaty, and three pieces of fluke, which were were fresh and mild. It also came with a piece of salmon nigiri, a piece of tuna nigiri, a piece of fluke nigiri, and a piece of yellowtail nigiri, which had a pleasantly strong flavor and was flaky and eight well-constructed salmon rolls. I then tucked into my Spicy Tuna Rolls, which unlike other Spicy Tuna Rolls I have had, were not minced and used a piece of tuna instead. Also, the mixture of sesame oil and chili oil did not deliver spice immediately, but packed a punch once the flavors danced on your tongue! What keeps me from giving Nagahama a perfect five? Sadly, some of the hot food is not great. For example, I ordered the White Meat Chicken Teriyaki on a later visit and found it to be mediocre at best, as the chicken seemed like it was boiled as opposed to broiled, as it was bland and rubbery in texture. In addition, the vegetables that accompanied it were a tad overcooked. However, the teriyaki sauce, served on the side, was well balanced, as it was sweet, savory, and salty. What was even worse about the Chicken Teriyaki beside the fact that it was mediocre was that at $19, the portion size was laughably small! In my experience, other Japanese restaurants I have been to do this simple dish far better and in larger portion sizes too. Overall, I would return to Nagahama if I were in the area, as the sushi and service were excellent, but I would stay away from the hot food, which is not great.
We came here after a day at the beach because I was so hungry and craving sushi.. This place was packed on saturday night and judging from the yelp reviews I think they are a very popular joint here in Long beach..There was a cute old lady at the front I am assuming she is the owner, she greeted us with a big smile when she brought us to our table.
The food itself was pretty good, we ordered the sashimi deluxe and 3 rolls and the fish was pretty fresh and the rolls were pretty flavorful as well. The price is reasonable here also, however my review is more for their service we received here.
My husband ordered diet coke which never came. When he asked the waitress about the coke, she was a bit rude about it, she kept asking us if she was the person we ordered the coke from as if we were accusing her of not bringing us the coke when she wasnt the person taking our drink order, it made me a bit uncomfortable, i dont care who took our order, we werent accusing anyone, we just wanted the coke….
Then it took forever for the sushi to come out. I think we waited 20 mins with no food and no one coming to let us know the state of the food. We overheard the old lady in the front speaking japanese to another lady working there, being japanese, my husband asked her politely in japanese how much longer our food will take, instead of letting us know the status of the food, she pretended all of a sudden to not understand japanese and just walked away. It is like a slap to our face. We thought maybe we made a mistake and she is not japanese, but then we heard her speaking in japanese to the other waitress again and we were certain she understands the language.. If you are japanese and own a japanese restaurant, do not pretend you dont speak the language when confronted by a japanese customer.
There is also a chinese waiter here who is very rude. I guess the business is so good here they dont really care too much about the service. Lucky that i was a little drunk from the wine so I wasnt too upset about my experience lol
This is by far the best sushi place on long island – I have been coming here for over 10 years and the sushi is always delicious, the staff is fantastic and they cater to sushi eaters and cooked food eaters alike.
Highly recommended.
One tip: don't do take out – the sushi isn't very good for some reason.
This is an excellent "long island" sushi joint. The fish is fresh, sake selection clearly defined.
If you are a roll person. Go!
If you are looking for exotic fish flown in from Japan, this isn't the place for you.
I always order the sweet shrimp with the heads fried. If you are going to sit at the sushi bar sit closest to the entrance. Heday the owner is the only person who should serve you at the bar.
Sometimes you simply have to pay for quality. There are quite a few good sushi places in the vicinity of Long Beach. I think this is the only GREAT sushi place around here though. And at $15+ for some of the rolls, it SHOULD be. Their special rolls are amazing. The fish is fresh, the rolls are huge (I don't recommend this place as a first date spot because it's hell-a-awkward trying to fit their rolls in your mouth in one bite, and if you do, you def look funny while chewing it). "Incredible Tuna" appetizer is awesome (I wish they made the Incredible Tuna roll too that Taiko RVC makes, so freaking good) Black Cod Miso appetizer is super tasty. And this is the only sushi around here that is so good, it's still cravable leftover after a day in the fridge. Service is friendly too. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is that it's so damn expensive. Dinner for two last week cost me almost $140 with tip. When you're on a budget, hit up the the more affordable spots. But when you feel like ballin' so hard muhf*ckas wanna find you, this sh*t cray…
My 4 friends and I came to this locally known spot on a Sunday night. Service – slow. But to give them some credit – it was very busy in there.
We ordered 7 rolls, and all of them were delicious and fresh. I like how you can have an option to order a 1/2 roll on some of the specialty ones.
Black dragon was the tables favorite roll including me!
