Nagomi

“It's also very rare for Japanese owned and operated (sushi) restaurant that delivers but Nagomi delivers to West Village from Soho.”

“I usually splurge a little and get the deluxe set, which is 8 pieces plus a spicy tuna roll, plus a miso soup (which I must say, is very good).”

“I say this is a great local place and nice to have around in the area.”

  1. Try lifting a Britax stroller with a 10-pound baby and all the space-consuming infant accouterments, and you'll have a pretty good idea of how hard it is to find some standard, not-BlueRibbon-pricey sushi in Soho.

I admit that because of close proximity to my almost-in-the-Holland tunnel job location, and my endless craving for sushi, Nagomi remains high on my list of possible lunch options. It's still pricey and you can probably order only one dish–no lunch libation–to keep up with your saving-for-a-mortgage budget.

But, the spicy tuna rolls are divine. The service is humble, treat-you-with-the-utmost-respect respectful. And the atmosphere is clean, pleasant and my personal favorite, fly-free.

    Delivery – good

There is another restaurant, En Brasserie, that offers not always fresh sushi but that is it in the village. Aki 4th St closed and the same location became a tasty ramen joint, Ramen-ya. It's also very rare for Japanese owned and operated (sushi) restaurant that delivers but Nagomi delivers to West Village from Soho. This obvious reason, we became a regular (delivery) customer. We oder the same thing and has been accepted their inconsistency in quality.

    Nagomi's Chirashi Deluxe ($40)
    – it is enough for two of me. It is packed with variety of the sea. Most exciting item for me is a crunchy fried Prawn's head. I loved the crunchiness and saltiness of the shrimp. It adds oily crunchiness.

    Sushi Omakase  ($60)
    – Sushi Neta has been good to fine. Occasionally we hit with a fishy tuna, always tuna interestingly. The soup that comes with has been good. It's different each time. My favorite is a whole crab in miso soup. It packed with crab-ness. Appetizer that come with is mostly thinly sliced yellowtail (inconsistent quality) with Yuzu citrus dressing and with/without garlic chips. It's good when it's fresh.

Nagomi is not the best Japanese but they have a integrity in making traditional food and reflecting to what they make and knowing that, it comforts me. The chef creates old school, to me, but I appreciated the chef's humble care in each dish. If a dish requires graded radish and forgot to deliver with my order, they send an one right away.

  3. Ordered take out for two.  Pricey for average sushi. The eel and cucumber roll should have been called cucumber with small amount of eel roll.

  4. This place was pretty whatever. Didn't have to wait for a table and it wasn't bad or anything. Just very very average. We got miso, salad, dumplings and then larger chef selection platter for two people and were not full. I guess its cheap for sushi but still not a cheap dinner. Wait staff was a little slow even though there were only two other tables full.

  5. Decent sushi spot.  Not amazing, but more than edible.

4 of us went on a Saturday night and it was fairly quiet inside.  It appears they do a good take out service as I saw many bags going in and out, but only another 4 or 6 people were inside when we showed up.

The menu was pretty substantial.  All the normal rolls and sushi pieces you can imagine.  I think the best rolls for the value were the Tune Double and the Salmon Double.  Another one we really liked was a seared tuna over vegetables and a really sweet sauce.  I can't find the name on the menu, but it was good.

The decor was simple and the bathroom was clean.

  6. I was taken to Nagomi by a coworker on my first day and I thought it was pretty good. Their lunch special for 3 sushi rolls is a bit on the expensive side compared to a lot of other lunch specials around the city but I believe it's better quality fish. It's definitely a lot fresher than your typical "3 rolls for $9" specials.

It's a decent sushi spot and you get soup with your lunch special, which is always nice. The service is pretty attentive and I didn't feel neglected at all, even though I think there maybe only 1 waitress while we were there.

I rather enjoyed the Salmon, Tuna and Yellowtail-Scallion rolls I had. I'm already plotting about my next lunch here!

  7. This is a solid sushi option in the area.  It's not Blue Ribbon, as some have felt obligated to point out, but I hardly think they're trying to be, nor should anyone expect them to be.  I've eaten in and had takeout, but would generally recommend the latter.  It's a small space and fills up quickly.

Standard combos and sushi fare are on offer, but you're definitely paying SOHO prices here.  A simple sushi combo with 6 or 8 pieces, plus a roll, is going to cost you upwards of $15.  Probably closer to $20 all in.  With that said, the quality of the fish is consistently good and the preparations are well done.  I have never had an issue.

This isn't my ace in the hole, but I have been a number of times and will undoubtedly return.  As long as you don't go in expecting to have an out-of-body experience, I recommend this place.

  8. Went to lunch there today with a friend.  The small side salad was DELISH!  A nice portion for $3.50!  I also had the tempura udon.  Gotta love some panko-flaked veggies & shrimp placed on top of a lovely pile of noodles in a delicious broth!
Things to know:  $15 credit card minimum… so make sure you order generously or have cash.  My friend had the bento box and it was TONS of food!!!  Impressive for a local lunch place… I think we'll be back!
