  1. Failure of both fish and presentation.

Tough conclusion to be made of a restaurant that can't figure out how to serve chirashi – the classic dish of sliced sashimi on a bed of sushi rice.  At Nana, sashimi arrived on a platter, with a dome of meagerly flavored rice on the side.  So much for authenticity.

Even worse was the presentation of escolar, the banned-in-Japan white fish that causes diarrhea.  When asked about the fish's identity, the waitress explained "white tuna."  In the words of Trump, WRONG!   I'm not sure if it's illegal to identify escolar this way, but it's at least very misleading.

Fortunately, no diarrhea after my dinner.  Next time, will stick to rolls.  Hold the escolar.

  2. Nana is my new go to sushi restaurant in the neighborhood. I've tried almost every option in the area and Nana is great. It's a large restaurant, pretty nice inside, and they have BYOB with no corkage fee.

To start I always have a Kani salad. I really happen to love the Godzilla roll at Nana. The roll is just spicy tuna inside topped with avocado and eel/mayo sauces. I once tried the sweetheart roll and really didn't love it.

It's great to have a sushi spot that's consistent considering most sushi in the neighborhood is mediocre. Definitely worth trying it out!

  3. Our office has ordered sushi from here for the past few years.  If I had written a review when we started ordering, I would have gone down to 3 stars, mainly because delivery was so slow.  I'm glad to report that their delivery time has improved.  Also, to be fair, we are a bit away from the restaurant.

Their sushi is pretty good.  The sushi & sashimi combo ($49) for 2 is HUGE.  It could easily feed 3.  At $14 each, you may be better off ordering 2 sushi & sashimi lunch combos, which are well made and filling.  Also, you get your choice of miso soup or salad with these.  The miso soup is okay, but it's more watery than in other Japanese restaurants.  For me, the salad, which comes with sesame-ginger dressing on the side, is the better choice.

The lunch special bento boxes are pretty good, and, at $7.75 or $8.75, well priced.  You can't go wrong with their chicken teriyaki.

Recently, I started to order their lunch kitchen entrees, which feature Southeast Asian cuisine.  I really liked their Malaysian red curry.  Depending on your choice of tofu, chicken, beef or shrimp, these go for either $7.75 or $8.75, and you get a lot for your money.

The vegetable spring rolls are pretty good.  One appetizer is the Indian pancakes with curry potato dipping sauce.  It has a unique (and I mean that in a very good way!) taste.

I have visited the restaurant for lunch and dinner.  The décor and service are very nice.  I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere.

  4. FYI, it takes a while to get food and the service isn't super good. Was here for lunch with one other. Interesting place with semi-better sushi than what I can find otherwise around my job.

The atmosphere here is a bit bizzare. With the red lights, the bar, the seats, and especially the house/trance music, it almost reminds me of a club more than a random Asian Fusion place.

I got some tea while the other guy got a plum iced tea. The former turned out to be free and nicely strong while the later reminded me of Maesil, a Korean plum tea. Had a similar flavor. He kind of liked it while I thought it was fine.

For my main dish, I chose unagi don which was listed under lunch specials for 12:95 or something similar. The plate was quite large. The eel was quite fresh and while the rice was a little clumped, it still tasted fine. There were also some pickled radish and some pickled carrots which were both fine.

I asked him about the free miso soup it comes with and he said it doesn't though I thought the menu said otherwise.

The other guy got a 3 roll choice for 11.50 or 12.50. He chose a shrimp tempura, California roll, and a sweet potato roll. He also got some spicy sauce to dip some of the rolls into. The portion size again was quite big. The wasabi on the side tasted pretty fresh and was quite spicy.

The weakest of the three was probably the shrimp tempura but it still tasted OK.
The california roll, which I usually dislike, was pretty fresh. Good amount of fake crab.
The sweet potato roll was remarkably good with some excellent crunch and some nice sweetness. I'd easily order it again.

It also came with the usual side salad/miso soup though I would note that the miso soup looked like it had a bit more seaweed than normal

We got the check and the price was a little bit high. They charged me 18.95 for the lunch special. The waiter didn't seem to know that it was part of the lunch special though I had pointed it out. He said my mistake, which seemed to be pretty genuine, and changed it to the lunch special price.

I am not sure if the portion I got is also the same for lunch. Other than this, the food was fine, borderline quite good especially with the sweet potato roll,.

If the service was better, I might bump it up to a 4. I'll probably be back here again.

  5. Nice place, empty on July 4th at lunch. We both got the Spicy Shambal Sauce Entree, with very nice tofu, and very large portion, very happy about that. Girlfriend got the Peanut Avocado Roll, she loved it.

    Good, efficient and polite service.

Note to some restaurants on Curry Hill, provide the vegetarian with a good portion, make it spicy, and have a polite waiter, and you will get higher ratings.

We will be back to sample more.

  6. 4 friends who starved in an evening stopped by as it was almost empty. We really loved their rolls 🙂

  7. I have been to Nana about 5 times in the past month. I am a huge fan! There are a couple of sushi places in this area, but I keep coming back to Nana. I live close by so the location is extremely convenient for me. Prices are super cheap for NYC. The BYOB is a huge plus and they do not charge a corking fee. The staff is kind and attentive. The food is always fresh and delicious. Great for either sit down or take out.

If you have a large group I would recommend calling ahead to reserve a table. Never had a problem with waiting though. They always seat parties promptly, but they do have a pretty large dinner crowd.

Keep up the good work Nana!

  8. Tip: this place is byob. We didn't know at the time so we actually ordered our appetizers and my sister walked across the street to a great wine store and got us 2 bottles (no corkage fee!)

As for the food it was excellent especially for the prices. The seaweed salad was a huge portion. We also got the cheese wontons which were different then your typical cheese wontons. These were in the shape of a ball packed with tons of cheese (aka if you're looking for a crab Rangoon with lots of crab not your place, but if you like lots of cheese come running).

The sushi was very good. We all got one of the combo dinner plates. They came with 3 rolls, each of 6 pieces aka tons of sushi. You won't leave hungry or sober by coming here.
