Really fresh organic ingredients, very tasty dough, sauces and cheese. Lovely spacious decor. The only problem is they take a llloooonnnggg time! Not good if you only get a 30 minute lunch.
Had this two days in a row. It was good thin crust pizza. Probably due to its ovens the texture was different from a wood fired oven. It was a doughy chewy bread with nice acidic tomato sauce and cheese. There's a nice crust but there's still a nice chewy texture to it. I only had their pain red and white pizza. I prefer the red one.
got takeout here last night. pizza was pretty damn good! we tried the buffalo mozz margarita and a sopressata / mushroom pie.
only complaint was the Kale Caesar salad. it was literally a handful of kale, a few chips of shaved parm and a side of dressing in a small container for $8.00. I'll go back for the pizza, but will refrain from ordering a salad next time.
How cool is this spot! I'd seen the food trucks around town but this is their origin.
I dropped in as part of Jane's Walk, a tour of East Harlem.
Max Crespo, the owner and an East Harlem local, talked with us for a minute about NE's green philosophy. His trucks use clean energy – a rarity for refrigerated food trucks in NYC – and this gorgeous brick-and-mortar actually generates more energy via solar panels & mini turbines than it uses! The location is made entirely of restored & reclaimed materials, including the original building's gorgeous wooden ceiling.
But what matters is the pizza!! When Max described the pizza-making process, I was a bit skeptical. An electric oven that bakes pizzas in one minute? Isn't that heresy? Then the pies came out and all misgivings were instantly forgotten. Fresh, gooey, flavorful toppings on a perfectly baked crust. I get picky about crust, and NE's is a star-crossed combo of soft, fluffy center and firm, crispy edges.
In three words: NOM NOM NOM.
Neapolitan Express proves that you can serve the community and the environment with a fantastic product. I can't wait to return!
