  1. The food is excellent. The manager is rude. Our server Gabriel was a peach. They had an event called Feteccine and there was some kind of misunderstanding about how long food and drinks would be served. The all inclusive brunch ticket that my friends and I purchased clearly says unlimited mimosas and a 3 course meal. The menu we received only had two courses. The manager then told us they would not let anyone order food after 3pm, and told her servers the mimosas were only unlimited for an hour. The restaurant must have been confused about a simultaneous deal they were offering on unlimited rum punch that was available through the same event for specified hour long periods. When she came to our table and spoke to us, she mentioned "I'm already losing money on this deal". Sorry, but that isn't my problem. That needs to be worked out with the event coordinator.

I want to give a shout out to the hook up on our '3rd course', which we received because we inquired about its whereabouts.

All in all food was delicious, service was helpful, manager boooo! Thanks for trying to ruin my birthday, it's not working. I'm gonna get back to my mimosa now! 😉

  2. This place has a lively ambiance and located around NYU. Has separate eating and dancing area. Server was nice to our party. However, food is ok…and extremely pricey in comparison to any jamaican food I had in my life. I guess this place needs a lot of rent money…but I wish they had a little more pizzazz/flavor in the food.

  3. Since this is an updated review, I will keep it simple.

The food is still great! Jerk chicken and the shrimp and grits are consistently delicious. The service can be slow, but the wait staff is overall friendly enough. The bus boys be on point though, and I find that a little odd. (Perhaps they should be waiters?)

The downstairs is still a lounge, however, not open on the Sunday that I visited and NYC has me spoiled on every night being a weekend night. Lol

**Be sure to make a reservation – you will wait quite a while without one.

  4. Honestly, the food here is good- maybe 4 stars. They also serve strong, tasty drinks, though you'll pay a premium. We actually really enjoyed this restaurant- the ambiance was spot-on. Until we got the bill and noticed they had already included the gratuity.

Now we always give pretty generous tips, even for uneven service, which honestly is what we got here. But do you really have the nerve to add the gratuity as part of the bill without really advising us of that fact ahead of time (I read somewhere it was on the menu but I didn't see it)?

That's what we call a ridiculous operating model and I won't support it- ever, in any restaurant, in any city. Make your employees happy, sure, but lose customers. A bad proposition.

I'd go back if they stop the madness…

  5. Went here over NYE weekend because I wanted jerk. However for some reason I wanted to see what oxtail taste like for the first time. Needless to say, me personally, I wasn't impressed. Not because it lacked taste or anything but because i didn't realize it was stew based and I'm not a fan of stew. We ordered the chefs taster (I believe) which feeds 2 and it included 6 dishes for $35. The highlight of this dish for me was the curry goat surprisingly because for some reason I've always been afraid to try it. It was very flavorful and I couldn't get enough of it. The jerk chicken was also just like I like it. Spicy, grilled taste with juicy meat. I also loved the greens as well, they had a spicy kick to them.

We were seated immediately upon arrival upstairs at one of the cozy 2 seater tables. Our tall, nice looking waiter's service left a lot to be desired. He never checked on us once after we placed our order. Not to see if everything was ok or drink refill. Only to drop off the check and pick up the payment.

Definitely will return when I'm back in New York.

  6. Stopped by with a friend of mine having just returned from a trip to Jamaica.  We wanted to relive the glory days I suppose.  We sat upstairs by the window and could hear the thumping music from what I believe is a club downstairs.  It was a fun and festive atmosphere, and still quiet enough to chat.  I've heard the rum punch is delicious, but we both opted for the banana pina colada and enjoyed it.
For an appetizer we spilt the Escoveitch Fish n' Bammie and I am so glad we did.  I can't say that I loved the bammy, which is a flatbread made from cassava.  It was very dry and may be something that locals love.  But the fish itself was really delicious, and the pickled veggies that coated it was so good.  Beware of the odd scotch bonnet that lurks in the veggies… I loved it!
My friend ordered the Jerk Steak and I ordered the jerk chicken.  The jerk chicken was just ok, and certainly not anything to rave about.  It was cooked well, but tasted nothing like jerk that I've had before.  If I go back I will definitely order the entrée portion of the Escoveitch Snapper.  I think my friend liked his steak a lot.
There was some slight oddness when the bill arrived… they had already included a tip.  For only 2 people I thought that was strange… especially because there was still an open line for an additional tip.  I found that a little confusing, and slightly annoying.  But all in all it was good service and I enjoyed myself.

  7. A local friend recommended Negril Village, and I'm glad she did! We went early on a Friday afternoon, and there were only a few people in the restaurant when I arrived. We started with the Guava BBQ wings, which were cooked perfectly (none of that dry chicken foolishness) and were bathed in a delicious sauce. Their baked cornbread and the whipped butter that accompany it are fan-tas-tic! I don't think most places make cornbread well, either because it's normally too dry, too bland, or both, but Negril doesn't commit either of these crimes.

We shared the jerk chicken, which was interesting and different than jerk that I've had at other places (including in Jamaica). It was very peppery–not in a bad way, but just different. The rice and peas were pretty standard. I also ordered the curry goat stew with jasmine rice and mashed yams. Let it be known: the mashed yams really made the meal! I am a huge fan of curry goat and while I think Negril's version is ESPECIALLY full of bones (more than I have ever seen before, even for naturally bony goat), I still enjoyed it.

I asked our very attentive but not overbearing server if they had a rum punch that didn't have a coconut flavor and they made the Village Island Punch, which actually made me feel like I was back in Montego Bay. The Montego Bay Iced Tea wasn't quite as good, though, but not bad. It was heavy on the mango, which normally isn't a problem, but it tasted more like canned mango juice than the good, fresh stuff.

Our waiter was very friendly and attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. I was definitely feeling the island music, and I've heard good things about their nightclub area but can't comment on that. All in all, I left Negril smiling!

  8. Really delicious food. The place was packed but still honored our reservation even though we were a disrespectful 45 minutes late. No appetizers were ordered but three of our four strayed with some drinks and beers. The beverages are overpriced for my taste. Strong and yummy but just too expensive. Order three and your almost at $50. As for food, I had the jerk salmon which was delicious. The jerk sauce was mouth watering. I was not a fan of the extra side of sweet potatoes I ordered. The extra side of Mac and cheese made up for it though- not too creamy, not dry- just perfect. The server must have been really busy because we didn't see him at times, maybe 20 minute chunks.

They have a lounge downstairs and the weird thing is, when you have to go to the bathroom you need to walk through the back kitchen, walk down the stairs and use it there. When we finished eating we wanted to go check it out and were stopped by a rude woman saying we needed to go back around out the front and pay. I said what? Pay? We just paid $287 for dinner! So I went upstairs and asked the hostess if this was accurate and with an attitude she said "Yup, doesn't matter. $20 a person" I said no thanks and we left. Another 80? To go downstairs and order more overpriced drinks? No thanks! The food was great, would have been a solid four star review but they turned me off.
