  1. Neil's Coffee Shop
    NY: Manhattan: UES

After a sleepover with an ex girlfriend who I hadn't seen in 15 years, she didn't even make me breakfast so I opted for Neil's Coffee shop. The window specials which attracted me didn't apply since it was Sunday. I ordered corned beef and hash, eggs over medium, wheat toast, and black coffee. The eggs were overeasy and the plate came with more potatoes. The hash was from a can meaning plenty of salt. The two pieces of bread were crispy with just the center buttered. The coffee was strong. Overall a quick bite of diner food. Pay at the counter. $12.

  2. It's a cramped greasy spoon, but I love it.  Very New York.  Had breakfast here one morning.  Completely overpriced – but welcome to NYC.  I sat at the counter and had a very greasy egg and cheese and bacon sandwich.  It really hit the spot.  But this is one of those typical small diner-type places that just litter NYC.  It's why I love it here – two steps any direction you'll find food.  Back in Texas, I have to drive 20 minutes just to get anywhere!!!

  3. Not a bad little place to pop in and get an egg sammy. Coffee is what you would expect, the best part of this place is all the famous head shots on the wall.

  4. Went here to grab a bite to eat with a friend for dinner. It was around 8pm on a weekday, so there wasn't much of a crowd.

For my meal, I decided to get a corned beef sandwich and a fresh squeezed orange juice. While the orange juice was amazing, the corned beef sandwich left a lot to be desired–the meat was chewy, it was a bit on the smaller side, and the rye bread was flavorless.

Needless to say, this place doesn't seem to amount to much of a lunch/dinner place.

  5. Sent to Neil's by our doorman after arriving in NYC, we wandered in for a late lunch and it was a perfect unassuming coffee shop of days gone by.  We ordered the standard fare: Burgers, Salads, and Milk shakes.  It was fast, friendly, and tasty.  A place for locals, it is just as easy a destination if you are visiting and want an authentic old school coffee house experience.

  6. I like Neil's Coffee Shop for breakfast on the UES; however, I can't say I love it.

They give you a lot of food; however, the quality isn't the best and the food is a bit on the bland side. But they do have Tobasco sauce among the many other condiments on the table / counter. The prices aren't cheap but  then again not a lot of places are on the UES.

The kitchen seems to be haphazard with the food / plating. Some orders turn out great while others not so much. A splurge breakfast for four here costs just under 50 bucks. A basic breakfast for three costs just under 27 bucks.

Service can be slow and you may get some attitude from your server.

  7. Solid diner, but note it closes early: Monday evening, they were shuffling us out at 8:30pm.

That said, the service was very friendly, and my turkey club came on exceptionally well-toasted whole wheat–which seems, and is, a ridiculous thing to commend a place on but I really did bite into it and think, "dang, that is well-toasted bread!".  (This speaks either to the bread and its toasting, or to the paucity of interesting commentary threading my internal monologue.  No comment.)

The diner fries were perfection.  I ate here with a 9-year-old from southern California (where apparently they have no diner fries? Savages.) and he treated them with an awe he might otherwise reserve only for aliens, or snow.  The fries were golden and not too greasy and firm and light, and a few of them were the length of a hand or even a pint glass.

The decor will appear to you to be one of two things: quaintly dated, in a "aww, they haven't changed this place since the old days", or thoroughly in need of renovation.

Minus point for messing up my sandwich order a bit (they left out the cheese).  Plus point for being a diner.

  8. Iconic NYC diner with the neon sign outside to match. They served me up a really good French toast plate with coffee that tasted ok. One star off for the priciness. You can get a cheaper breakfast at other delis nearby but this gives you a nice booth to relax and read the paper.
