I was too quick to judge New McDonald Fruit Corner; perhaps it was the blizzicane that made for such a crap selection of fruit/veg.
Went back again today and ran into people unloading fresh vegetables and the carrots/parsnips/onions I got look (and smell… and hopefully will taste) really good.
Plus, 2lbs carrots, 1lb parsnips, 2 onions — for less than $3.50. Win.
I'm not sure how to do it, but this should probably have more tags than "farmer's market." It's more of a bodega/small grocer with a pretty large selection (indoors and out) of fruits and vegetables.
If you go through a lot of veggies and are nearby, they've got a wide selection and good deals (depending on what's in season). But like many such markets, much of the fare is ripe and ready to use immediately.
I live in Park Slope but like hitting this neighborhood for the diverse markets and good deals. It's just 10 minutes from me on the F/G.
Anyhow, what I really like about this shop is they have bulk dried Mexican chiles, which was kind of a surprise. Anchos, Chipotle, etc. But they also have fare that caters to a very ethnically diverse hood – Asian, middle eastern, etc. For example, they've got big eggplants for Italian fare, but also the little Indian ones – in bulk.
It's convenient because its across the street from my apartment. I wouldn't shop here probably for anything but produce though and maybe a bottle of ketchup. It seems Hispanic run and they have a large variety of vegetables that I normally wouldn't even find in the grocery store down the block. Really unique things actually that I'm not sure how to even cook. Maybe a culinary adventure is waiting for me in the future. So I'm happy about that. Also, everything is way cheaper surprisingly than the foodtown or crazy pants Russian/Ukrainian apple grocery farm whatever its called down the block that's always rioting and on strike. If I'm coming in for a handful of fruits/veggies I never seem to pay more than about $2. I'd make sure to wash everything when you get home though. Sometimes they roll out of their bins onto the street and are placed back in.
It's been about 10 years since I've really come to this place and it's still the same! I stocked up on fruits from the outside (usually cheaper) and inside (a little pricier). They have almost anything you'd need to make an amazing fruit salad, regular salad, or anything fresh. I was so happy they even had quineps (sp) and lychee, which is great, since when you get them in Chinatown you can't pick through them yourself. The service is friendly and I'm happy to be back!
