New Rochelle Diner
“For entrees we had their Gyro platter with Greek salad and French fries and their open faced turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and broccoli.”
“that being said differences from thruway and issues/areas to be improved.”
“Love their pancakes and they offer all flavors in a short stack.”

This diner has been long awaited by many. Ever since the much-loved Thru-Way Diner (which was located across the street) closed in 2008, residents of New Rochelle have been without a local diner. Enter New Rochelle Diner, which hopes to fill the void that the Thruway left.
Though it is natural to compare New Rochelle Diner to the Thru-Way, it's actually more accurate to look to the Nautilus Diner in Mamaroneck for comparison since they're owned by the same people; I frequently eat at the Nautilus and recognized many of the employees from there.
They did a good job with the construction and design of the diner, it's big and open with splashes of reds, yellows, and oranges on the walls and booths. I prefer cooler colors to decorate a diner but this scheme works fine. I actually tried getting in here last week but I could not find a spot in the lot and the line to get in was out the door. This time, however, I had better luck and waited less than five minutes for a table.
The menu is extensive and has a good selection of most things a diner serves. The bread basket is worth noting because it contained a lot of different types of breads, plus saltine crackers, Melba toast, and sesame breadsticks. The food is pretty much the same as they serve at the Nautilus, and that's okay because I like their food – compared to other diners I find the quality to be a little higher. Tonight I had the chicken BLT wrap which came with a side of cole slaw and a pickle, though no fries (you have to order it separately – don't really understand that). Nevertheless, it was tasty as expected.
Service is a sore spot here, I've found it takes a while for anyone to come to our table after we've been seated (even times when it was relatively quiet). Moreover, the quality of the service is average; they're relatively new in the area so they should be wowing clients with customer service.
For me, it's a convenient spot to go to and the food is good; that alone will make me return. Hopefully they brush up on their service, but we'll see.
Looks nice but thats about it.
First came here with my girlfriend and picked up some desserts. Typically diner deserts in that they looked really good but tasted like every other diner dessert ( not good). I was hoping they would give the BLDs "big chocolate cake" a run for their money, since the big chocolate cake happens to be a lot of money at 8 dollars a slice. However, it did not come close, and it looks like i'll be shelling out major money to just to be able to get a good slice of cake at a diner.
Decent diner.
As most other reviews pointed out, this is a little near where the beloved Thruway Diner used to be. That diner was sold and torn down to make a failed Walgreen's. Instead of building on that land, they took a part less than a block away (across the street from the Home Depot). Not sure if these are same owner of the old Thruway (who also owned a diner in Larchmont), but once again there's a diner in this area of New Rochelle. No need to go through a further history lesson about this diner or its predecessor, as most others already mentioned it.
It's fairly new, so things are clean and look new. The bathrooms are actually clean here. It's pretty spacious inside as well.
The waitress I had seemed a bit distracted with personal issues, but was generally ok. Food came out in a decent time, so no complaints about the wait or anything along those lines.
The menu is diner average. Most items on the menu you'll find at most diners anywhere, so you should know what to expect. The problem with this diner is the prices of the items, which are a little higher than most. That is the reason for the generous 3rd star and no more. Perhaps they are trying to get help paying the bills or thought that they'd cash in on being a diner back in the area, but they need to shave some of the prices off and be like most other diners. Why would I come here and pay a few dollars more when I could get the same dish for slightly cheaper elsewhere?
I had my normal bacon cheeseburger deluxe. I thought maybe with the $2+ more than I pay elsewhere that this bacon cheeseburger would be even better than normal. It wasn't. It was ok, but weaker (and slightly smaller) than other diners. The fries were not that great at all actually – and I hardly ever complain about fries, which is rare for anyplace to mess up. I don't take pictures of my food ever, but probably should have this time. Seriously, charging higher than most other diners and their food is not even up to par with the average diner is ridiculous. I'd only come here out of desperation. And no, I'm not cheap – but I refuse to pay for something simply not worth the price. Maybe I'll give them another chance sometime and revise this review if things change.
The parking lot is on the small end with some bends, so use caution here. I came around 7pm, so the lot wasn't full.
So all in all, some will love that there is another diner back in this area. Due to price, I'd probably go elsewhere more or less when I'm in the mood for a "diner" experience.
It's a diner. We had breakfast it was fine. Close to home. Good place with decent service. I'll back. It's a good option.
Cute, makes me want to sing 'Happy Days'. The food is hearty and portioned well.
Seems like they are always busy, so that's always a good sign of great food…right?! Right! 🙂
I say hop on a train if you're in the city and eat at this diner. 🙂
Just went in with my wife after work and got some breakfast. Greek omelette, toast, and a side of corned beef hash. Wife got a short stack of chocolate chip pancakes. I thought everything tasted real good considering its a diner. I didn't expect Eric Ripert manning the grill in the back. Come on folks- what are we really expecting here? In the end, it's a good diner, the menu is as extensive as any other diner, service is so-so like any other diner but the most important thing here is that it helps to fill a void for the area.
We should be back.
My second time here, hoping for a better experience. It's really nice to see this place back, right across the street from its original location! It came back with a whole new design and modernization to it, which is nice. The staff is decently nice, just a little attitude I got once when I didn't want a drink. The cleanliness is up to par. When I first came here I was not impressed with the food whatsoever, which was a tuna melt, and breakfast omelette… You would think something so simple wouldn't be bad, but it was. This time I had decided to keep it simpler and order a veggie burger…. It was simple and really nothing wrong with it! Overall a fail yet easy to get a quick eat
