New Star

“So for me, New Star is definitely not an eat-in kind of place, only takeout and (free) delivery.”

“They have great service at decent prices, a plus is that they take debit and credit cards, the only draw back is that it can take a little while for the food to arrive.”

  1. It's been about two years since I've had Chinese takeout.  There's no particular reason as to why I stopped eating it… I just did.

But on a recent Saturday night we were hungry and the boys decided we should order some Chinese.  According to our friend/host who lives in the neighborhood – New Star is the best.

He wasn't lying.  It was good!

I know I know Chinese take out is the just, well, Chinese take out…but something about this place just made it better than so many other places I've had in the past.

For one – both the portions and proportions were right.  If I order a combo meal I want a equal-ish amount of rice and chicken – I don't want an entire container of rice and three pieces of meat.  New Star surprised me by giving a large helping of chicken (I ordered the sweet and sour) and a smaller sized container of rice.  Perfectly proportioned!  And I didn't feel super stuffed on rice after dinner.

And because I wasn't stuffed I was able to try the Apple Sticks!  These have never been my favorite but the boys ordered them and insisted I try one.  Wow.  Other take-out places have mushy barely fried apple sticks – not New Star.  Crispy and golden and just the right amount of sweet apple filling – they were so good!  Next time I'll be the one ordering the apple sticks.

  2. Not happy with my regular local Chinese takeout, I went a-Yelping for a new place to try and found New Star. It's got good reviews on Seamless, Grubhub and Urbanspoon too. They have a 2012 Golden Grub Award for their General Tso's Chicken. And free WIFI. I didn't like that bits of food from previous patrons were left on the tables and the dining area was grubby. Even the countertop where you order was greasy. But the place has a DOH "A" rating so I decided to have faith that the kitchen was better maintained than the front. The countergirl was polite and helpful, and dealing with her was very pleasant.

My group liked everything we got: eggdrop soup (very hot!), pan-fried vegetable dumplings, eggroll, apple sticks, vegetable chow fun, Thai fried rice, boneless spare ribs, shrimp & broccoli. Everything was fresh, tasty and not excessively salty. I especially liked the dumplings–a nice variety of veggies including good tofu in a delicate dough, lightly fried and not at all greasy. The portions are ordinary-size but the Chinese noodles are skimpy, only half-full packets. But they're fresh and crispy, not at all oily or stale, and I actually ate them unlike the oil-soaked packets of noodles I've had at other takeouts.

So for me, New Star is definitely not an eat-in kind of place, only takeout and (free) delivery. And delivery will be very easy using online ordering and my credit card.

UPDATE 5/10/2015: Delivery is SLOW! The food comes by motorbike at least 60 minutes from the timestamp on my online order, and on busy days even longer than that (example: "4/20").

  3. It was getting late on a Saturday evening and with the rain and all, didn't feel like venturing out for food. I tried this place because of the reviews and because they did delivery, plus being able to order online is the best! On top of that, it isn't very far away from my apartment.

I tried the shrimp and broccoli, shrimp roll, spare ribs, and cream cheese rangoons. The food was delicious and hot! The shrimp and broccoli I got as a combo, the rice was just ok but the shrimp and broccoli was cooked perfectly. The shrimp roll was crispy but not too dry. The spare ribs were moist, meaty, and some of the best. The cream cheese rangoons were fried to my delight!

The delivery took about an hour. The delivery guy was very pleasant and even apologetic that it took so long, I guess everyone was doing delivery that night because of the weather. I will definitely be ordering from here again when I am having craving for delicious chinese food.
