Sunday night family night, as our family put our heads together to figure out what to eat, my dad suggested New Tasty House 18. I didn't hesitate and said NO because I was not a fan of Tasty House 18 due to their service, quality of food and etc (we'll save it that for another review) but my dad insisted that we try the place so off to New Tasty House 18 we go! (Dad WINS, FATALITY!)
The main difference between the New and the original Tasty House 18 is one is a fast, take out style restaurant and the other one a sit down, family style Cantonese cuisine restaurant.
New Tasty House 18 is right next to the old Tasty House 18 on Kissena Blvd. it's pretty much right across from Walgreen so it's hard to miss.
Parking: There is usually a good amount of street parking on both side of Kissena Blvd and also there is a small parking lot directly behind the restaurant, the entrance is on Elder Ave BUT if you use the small parking lot, you'll have to go thru the old Tasty House 18 backdoor and go around to the new Tasty House 18.
Decor and Seating: First impression- WOW this place is so bright the walls painted green how interesting! Pretty clean, not too much decor other than a few LCD tv around the restaurant. They got a 3 round tables in the back that can seat about 10 each and then a few rectangular tables in the front that seats 2-4 each.
We came on a Sunday night at around 6:30pm and the place was fairly empty. Since the round tables were full, they combined 4 rectangular table together to accommodate our party of 9. We were seated right away and our waiter was friendly.
Since the menu was pretty standard, we order our usual favorites:
Beef and Chinese broccoli, string beans with minced pork, lamb chop, Salty Fish and Tofu Casserole, Fried Whole Fish in Spicy Sweet and Sour Sauce, Fried Garlic Chicken, Fish and Tofu Casserole, T-bone Steak and Silver Golden Egg Fried Rice.
All our dishes tasted pretty good but my favorites are:
Fried Garlic Chicken- Definitely did not expect this quality of food in this restaurant- the chicken was cooked perfectly- crispy skin and the meat was tender and juicy. Good flavor on the chicken with the drizzle of soy sauce and the fried garlic gave the chicken an extra layer of texture. Definitely impressed! MUST TRY
Silver Golden Egg Fried Rice- Usually I don't like to recommend fried rice but their fried rice definitely stood out here. first of all, rice is not mushy- a key to good fried rice! it wasn't overly greasy nor salty, they did a great job using a small amount of bacon to bring out the flavor. Super nice color and flavor. A MUST TRY!!
Fried Whole Fish in Spicy Sweet and Sour sauce- the fish tasted fresh- a big wow factor here, it was fried to golden brown, sauce was on point and perfectly balance. My only complaint is the portion of the dish.
Price: Overpriced: Most dishes ranges from $13- $25 and the portion is small! Considering how some of the top Chinese restaurants in Flushing charge about the same price with better taste and bigger portion and it's a 10 minute walk away.
Overall: New Tasty House 18 is Okay- It's clean and the food tasted pretty good. Now they'll just have to work on their price point and perfecting the taste on some of their dishes.
I lambasted its sister restaurant next door in 2012 for poor food. This is more of a sit down restaurant with a fairly standard Cantonese menu. Decor is decent and place was clean.
We had Peking pork chops, fish and tofu casserole, crystal fried rice, pan fried noodles and crispy garlic chicken. Everything was pretty good which was surprising given how much I disliked their food next door. Portions were a bit small for the price ( about 13 bucks a dish), but the chef clearly can cook.
Service was off but it just opened so I'm willing to give a mulligan. Had to ask three times for water and the waiter asked my kids to help him clear the table before dessert. Plates were also super cheap looking which detracted from presentation and doesn't fit with the look of the restaurant. Not a bad option in a northern Chinese dominated food area.
These are the same owners as Tasty house 18, amusingly enough the two restaurants are literally joined at the hip and separated by a door cutout. l wonder what their thought process was in naming this place. I guess it went something like "Oh screw it! Just add New to the existing name!" 🙂
New Tasty house 18 is a nice sit down restaurant serving up all your classical Cantonese type fare. What I love about this place is the prices are very reasonable and you get a decent portion for the price you pay, now with that said the food is pretty tasty as well.
The main dining area is upstairs and they also have 2 private rooms downstairs with a Karoke machine in the larger room and a separate Mah-jong room. Reserve the downstairs room for larger parties.
I always gage a Chinese restaurant by "Wok heat" or "Wok Hei" and the fried salted pork chops is always a good medium to use to see if the Wok is hot enough, Wok heat passed! The pork chops were meaty, flavorful and more importantly moist and tender. All the dishes are delicious and flavored well.
Some of my top pics are:
* Fried salted pork chops
* Salted cod, chicken and tofu casserole
* Ginger, scallion and garlic with oysters
* roasted chicken with scallion in gravy
* Sweet and sour eggplant casserole
* Fried fish fillet with tofu in brown sauce
The service staff are very friendly but I can see that they are still sluggish in perfecting the service. Hopefully a little more time in service will help the flow. What I was disappointed was the deameanor of the manager, though friendly he seemed always to be very distant and disconnected with the patrons.
Free self parking in the lot at the back and you enter through the Tasty house 18 doors and proceed to make a right turn to the restaurant. Note, since the restaurant can fill up pretty quick with limited space, they will seat you at the tasty house tables next door if you can't wait
