New Wave is a good, solid, old school diner with plenty to choose from in the menu. The walls are decorated with neighborhood celebs which are fans of the diner's food.
The breakfast and lunch options are legit. The service is fast and servers are friendly.
BTW, one of the waitresses looks like Elaine from Seinfeld….
Normally my post-gym snack is a turkey sandwich from my favorite deli down the street from my apartment building. But on those days when I've decided to get into the gym late before work, and thus do not have the time to make it back up to my place for a quick shower and bite to eat, I am left with scourging the UWS for a quick, healthy bite.
To be honest, the only reason I came in here was because I saw the name and I was currently listening to Against Me's "New Wave" album on my iPod. I figured it must be fate.
Yes, the place looks very diner-ish (slightly dingy), but I was in the "to go" market, so I didn't care. I ordered one breakfast sandwich with two eggs and swiss cheese on a roll. $3.50 + 5 minutes later, I walked out and dug in as I walked to the 72nd street train station.
What I liked: the roll was fresh, the eggs were hot, and the cheese was melted.
What I didn't like: it was a little…bland. And that's saying something for me since I tend to go "no salt" on everything. Even though I prefer my sodium levels to be low, I appreciate a little bit of seasoning.
Though for $3.50 and a quick 5 minutes in the cafe, it's not a bad option for breakfast.
In an ever changing world, I find comfort in places that never change. The folks who work here are exceptional and have taken the best of care to preserve this Broadway tradition. They've probably made some small changes over the years, like adding color photos to the menus. The apple walnut pancakes with bacon on top are a classic. Fresh squeezed orange juice is included. The coffee is simple, good and bottomless. I'm looking forward to the iron waffle (with ice cream) next time. The five stars may be earned by the stellar people who have eaten there over the years and are remembered on the wall; as well as coincidentally running into Paul Giamatti on the way there. Sideways really resonated with me at the time.
Our server was very friendly and food was pretty good.
No one at my table complained about their food. I got the french toast that had the bananas, walnuts, and whipped cream on that. That was yum. Their french toast is good, and they didn't skimp out on the toppings.
I'd say, if you're ever in the neighborhood and looking for a breakfast place, give this place a try.
This diner is just ok. It would be nice if the waiter listened when we ordered.
Seems like a friendly, neighborhood diner and I thought my typical omelette with hash browns and toast was fine until I found a hair in the potatoes.
