  1. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with this restaurant and bar.  We stayed at the Hyatt, and enjoyed a lunch, a dinner, and some cocktails at this restaurant & bar during our stay.  The food was above average (we had BLTs, a pizza, a baked pasta, chicken wings, a caesar salad and a burger during our visit), and the items were all good or better.  I particularly enjoyed the baked pasta with bread crumbs and the BLTs at lunch time- very tasty.  This is better than average hotel food- and in fact we enjoyed the food here much more than we did at the Battery park Ritz's restaurant.  The bar is excellent and they feature a number of TVs which provides an excellent setting for watching football.  I would return and eat here without hesitation – although clearly not a 'destination' restaurant.

  2. The service was decent and the drinks certainly leaned towards the expensive range but nothing about this place wows you. This is an OK hotel bar. Good for if you are staying at the Grand Hyatt or attending a meeting there, but certainly not a destination like many other NYC hotel bars.

  3. If you're in midtown and you need a convenient place to meet, this hotel bar is in the Grand Hyatt just over Grand Central Terminal. It's nothing special and it's expensive.

The prices: $6 for a soda, $14 for a glass of merlot, $18 for the glass of malbec, $18 for a tuna tartare appetizer and $14 for a hummus platter.

Would I go again? Not if I can help it!

  4. Admittedly, short of going to Grand Central when I need to, I avoid Midtown like The Plague. Busy. Crowded. Tourists. Overpriced. I'd rather eat my own foot. (Perhaps I could pick a better analogy, but hey. I like it.)

However, when meeting with two members of my college's alumni department who were in Manhattan for a conference, I was thinking of where to meet for coffee and tea near the trains. Ummmmm…one of the dozen Starbucks around G.C.S.? Perhaps the Cosi on Lexington if I really wanted to switch things up? (Oh…dear lord…no…) Luckily, they came across New York Central while waiting for me in the lobby of the Hyatt, so up we went.

It really is this pleasant oasis in the midst of the chaos.

With bar foods, stiff drinks, coffees, teas, and desserts, this is a perfect spot to meet friends post-work. It also provides a nice spot for impromptu, casual business meetings over cappuccinos, tea, and zeppoles with creamy chocolate dipping sauce. (Mmmmm.) The glass facade overlooks the bustle of 42nd Street, and I was in a peaceful place with my tea and dessert, so close, yet so away from it all.

Midtown, you provided me with a place I'd go back to on my own volition. BRAVA!

  5. Good location if you want to grab a bit after work before heading out by train. The food was good I had the trout with quinoa and red lentils.  The skin was crisp, but the grain/lentils seemed a little watery.

  6. ***3.5***

Walking into this hotel restaurant is like walking onto the set of an 80's bond-villains lair – cold, fantastical, with large interpretive sculptures peppered throughout the cool color palette decor. I could almost picture Christopher Walken sitting at our large, round table ready to get a quorum on some mad plot.

It was a work dinner outing and this place was my recommendation (after some research), so flutters of nervousness did occasionally run through me as we sat down at the table and began our dinner order.

Well, dinner was a win across the board among my colleagues – they loved their lamb, their burgers, the grits they had on the side and all the appetizers that came before.

As for myself, I thought the multicolored watermelon salad with mozzarella was perfectly refreshing and really tasty. My scallops…not so much. Unfortunately each time I bit into a scallop, my chew was accompanied by grit or sand, and level of salt in the dish really reinforced that scallops do in fact come from the sea. And…then there was the fact that the scallops were overcooked. I think May Day would retire this meal at Zorin's insistence.

The service was slowly attentive and our servers polite and unobtrusive. The wine list here is large and well-thought out (though the presentation via clipboard was a little strange) – definitely recommend a perusal.

Will I come back here again? Not personally, but if there was a need for a group dinner for my coworkers, this place will do just fine.

  7. Nice little restaurant in the Grand Hyatt on 42nd Street. Had the three course theater dinner…our party had roasted tomato and country chicken soup…salmon, grilled pork chop, and chicken—all were very nice. Meal also came with a glass of wine. Scotch on the rocks wasn't very generous, but at least they got the Johnny Walker Black right. Waitstaff were very attentive all during the meal…never had to ask for something but they didn't show up with it before we could. Three star solid meal…Jorge was a five star server. Great location in Midtown.

  8. Great place for work lunches. I tried their hot pastrami sandwich with a side of Caesar salad. I would give the sandwich a 4.5/5 – the melted cheese really made the sandwich.

You can do an Express Lunch option, which comes with soup or salad with half a sandwich order. I thought the portions were perfect. I wasn't grossly full but I wasn't hungry after the half/half.

My first time there, it was tricky to find because the ground floor entrance to Hyatt lists New York Central as being on the same floor, when it's actually on mezzanine. Other than that, I think I've found a pretty decent spot for future lunch meetings!
