This New York Mart just opened in Brooklyn and I love this market so far! Avenue U is a haven for Asian food and they are not short on Asian supermarkets either with 2 not too far off and another smaller New York Mart about 6 blocks further East.
This New York Mart really separates itself from the other markets because first of all, it's HUGE for an Avenue U market! It has plenty of aisles and one of the largest selections of food I've seen. Second of all, since it's new, it's clean (for now)! I'm asian and I haven't seen too many clean asian markets over the years with the seafood stench and unorganized foods in them.
I love the new feel to this place and, believe or not, it's not extremely crowded so there's plenty of space to navigate here.
This place is certainly much cleaner than the two supermarkets down the block heading down the streets numbers. However, the prices are a bit more expensive than the ones close by.
I won't lie though- they do have a great selection from Japanese to Filipino products. Their downstairs section is mostly junk food and candy (a whole section by the wall strictly dedicated to haribo and those of the like) and some pots, pans, ceramics, etc.
I don't like that the floor is slippery by the seafood section. That's a safety hazard and I've caught myself multiple times before slipping here.
I wouldn't come here really- it's not safe, just clean and neat. It's not as crowded but then again, you'd have to think why.
I've been in a couple of times now and have mixed reviews about the place.
Easy to find right on avenue U. Parking is the usual for busy Brooklyn, on the street and hard to find especially on the weekend. I usually just walk down here.
At the front is some produce, most of it looks alright but sometimes you just have to pick thru it to find something fresh. They sell flowers at the front as well. There is almost always someone at the front yelling about some specials. It can get loud and obnoxious on the weekend but just walk right past and move on….
Inside they have a decent selection of fish and some meat. Towards the back of the place they have fresh frogs and eel, and it smells anything but fresh. The smell is enough to make one want to turn around and run for the exit. Just breathe thru your mouth and keep walking. They have dirt cheap stuff to make sushi rolls. I love getting my sushi rice here. Cheap and delicious. Down the few aisles they have a lot of choices for different ethnic food. There is also a downstairs area which has occasional good finds.
Head to the check out lines which are always busy but move quickly. Cash and credit cards accepted. And also in the front is a red bull fridge 🙂
I came here and the doors were opened, but there weren't too many customers walking around. I only was in the store for about 2-3 minutes and they started flickering the lights and eventually portions of the light remained powered off. Of course, that was their way of saying get out of the store.
If the store was closing soon, shouldn't they have considered possibly locking the doors to not allow other customers to come in? To me, I felt like them not informing me they were closing soon right when I got in was a bit rude. I wasted my time in coming here and felt rushed. Who wants to buy anything when they're rushed right?
It was poor timing on my part, but the store could have handled their store closing a lot better, after all, they have been here for a few years already.
Probably the cleanest Asian supermarket on the ave considering that there are 3 within a ten block radius. You can find decent produce and even some more of the "exotic" types ( live turtles, conch). The place has 2 floors and an elevator to use if you're pushing around a shopping cart. My prefer market given the area.
