  1. 107 West is a little slice o' nice up in Hudson Heights.

I used to live around the corner from the original on West 107th and Broadway (…so it's NOT just a clever name?), and I dined in a few times. Good, but nothing to write home about. Funny that I'd move to a neighborhood where it's sister restaurant is located. What's great about this location is that it is in an area lacking many good American restaurants. (Perhaps I should rethink saying "American", as their menu is an odd yet workable combination of southern-influenced dishes…and sushi. Heh.)

Over the past 2+ years, I've partaken in brunch, dinner, and drinks here, all with pleasant outcomes.

On the a.m. front, they've got prefectly made French toast and mimosas, not to mention Bloody Marys so hot, they made my dad sweat during Mother's Day Brunch back in 2011. (Oh, memories…)

On the p.m. front, I choose to boast about their southern fried chicken. I'd like the coating to be a hair crispier, perhaps, but the rest is solid. The chicken contains so much whole, juicy, tender white meat, and the collard greens are perfectly cooked along with firm bits of pork. The mashed potatoes are almost the star, however. The butter sauce they serve in the middle is what dreams are made of, and I don't have a damn clue how they do it. It's more than just melted butter, and it's better than congealed butter. It's just…WOW. I could unabashedly eat cupfulls of this butter sauce, die of a heart attack, yet die happy because I died eating this sauce.

On the drink front, I've had a few, both in the restaurant and in their bar area. The White Russian, my usual standby drink, is solid. Their pear-based martini drink (OH, how I wish I remembered the name) is tasty, and their raspberry mojito is divine, filled with chunks of fresh fruit, fresh mint, and damn good rum.

This 107 West location really is a shining beacon in Hudson Heights. I have love for many restaurants in my 'hood, but this one floats to the top.

  2. After my friend and I explored Fort Tyron Park and the Cloisters, we took a walk around the neighborhood and stumbled upon this place since we were both starrrving. Place is simple and comfortable on the inside, my friend and I got a table right next to the window, since it was a beautiful sunny day.
We split the tofu fries, which were made just right. My friend is a big vegan burger fan, so she tried out 107's vegan burger and thought it was pretty good. I tried the jambalaya (for the first time in my life) and loved it. It's a definite mish-mash of seafood, meat, rice and veggies. It also had a little kick to to it, which I liked as well. The only thing  was the bread rolls they gave us were a bit on the stale side. My friend got a kick outta me gnawing away on one of them for about 5 minutes haha.

  3. After a long day running around New York City and climbing around Ft. Tryon Park, my group settled into "Next Door", a place that looked welcoming and inviting.  Indeed, the layout of this bar/restaurant is very nice.  When you enter, you're greeted by a bar area with television screens lining the area behind the bar.  To the left is the main dining area, with several tables spread out with enough room to move around comfortably.

The staff was nowhere to be found when we first walked in so we just began pecking around for a place to sit.  By the time we found a seat we liked, the waiters had caught up.  It was a slow night, so I'm guessing we caught them off their guard.

Once we were seated, the service picked up.  Our orders were taken quickly and soon slices of multi-grain bread were being provided along with a spread that I *think* was some combination of tahini and pumpkin.  It was distinct, but not particularly strong, but not bad for someting that is given for free.

The menu at Next Door is mostly Asian influenced, with sushi and sashimi featuring quite prominently, but there are also other items such as burgers and what I ordered, turkey meatloaf with bok choi and mashed potatoes.

Now, I've had (and made) my fair share of turkey meatloaf in my time, and generally you have to season it very well and usuall add something (either a sauce, herbs or vegetable) to really give it flavor.  Unfortunately, this just had…nothing exciting at all.  The turkey was moist, and that's a plus, but there was no real distinctive flavor.  The mash was whipped very well, but basically tasteless.  As sad as it is to say, the bok choi was the best part of the meal.  It was tasty, crunchy and cut into big slices.

Next Door is a nice place, and I get this feeling some of their other dishes may impress more than the turkey meatloaf.  I'd give it another shot, but with only average expectations.

  4. Eek.

I should have taken the name of this place to heart and gone "next door." I'm all for businesses like this finding success in the ever-evolving uptown neighborhood of Hudson Heights, but do a better job people! The food is a confusing combo of Asian-inspired dishes, sushi and things like pasta and burgers. I haven't tried the sushi, but based on how bad and poorly cooked my chicken was, I shudder to think of their handling of raw fish.

The service was flat out not good. The restaurant was basically empty and yet we had to wait for a long time to order, get water refilled and even ask for the check. The waiter couldn't have been less attentive if he tried.

I'll not be back here again…and I strongly advise residents of the neighborhood to do the same – let's get a real restaurant in this location ASAP.

  5. For the price is not so bad but not so good it's just OK

  6. I really enjoyed the food here. We started off with fried oysters with cole slaw and remoulade. Excellent. It reminded me of New Orleans. Then I got me pan-seared sea bass with grilled sweet potatoes. The latter were very unusual and interesting. The sea bass was not pan-seared, more like breaded fish of fish and chips. Still pretty decent. There was some kind of purple sauce that was nice and I can't recall it's composition at all. And sauteed spinach, which was excellent. The girlfriend got turkey meatloaf, collard greens, and mashed potatoes. Turkey meatloaf was solid, collard greens were TO DIE FOR. I had a pear sake and the girlfriend had a mohito. Both decent.

The menu boasts of an eclectic mix. There seems to be a Japanese influence there. It's a bit unexpected but I don't care, it was perfectly welcome.

Bizarrely, they were auctioning off the art hanging on the walls. There were stickers saying "current price: $200." The art kind of sucked. I don't know what to make of that.

  7. 6 cocktails were ordered and all were awful.

Do NOT get the Stormy Hampton. Ick.

Service was rough – we had to wait 10 minutes for the last drink to come, which ruined our toast.

I came for the beer, but the options are so limited. No IPA's on draft!

  8. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN!

The woman sitting next to us ordered a "Succa-tee-knee."

Instead of Sriracha, our waitress said "Suh-chee-chaw."
And she didn't dry our glasses after removing them from the sink.
She tried to pour our beer into glasses with water still at the bottom!
And she raved about the Fried Chicken, which was dry and flavorless.

I don't know what gave me and my friend uncontrollable diarrhea, perhaps something was wrong with the awful sushi or the horrible sashimi, or perhaps it had something to do with the undercooked fatty pork chunks in the collard greens.

I called the restaurant to complain, and a very kind fellow by the name of Thomas offered to void the bill, but to be honest that doesn't really make anything "better," because I became so violently ill that I had to give up BEAUTIFUL seats for one of the most amazing operas of the 20th Century (Philip Glass' Satyagraha) and also miss my friend's birthday party afterward. Thankfully, I've seen the opera a few times before, and my friend will have many more birthdays. But, still.

JACK OF ALL TRADES, MASTER OF NONE!
