I'm really surprised to se so many negative reviews. Although, I must say I ordered delivery through Seamless and did not visit the restaurant.
I live in Hamilton Hts. and there aren't really any sushi restaurants nearby that are easy to get to (going cross town is a NIGHTMARE.) So on a late Sunday night when I was feeling the stomach pangs for food and having a crazy craving for sushi I found this place on Seamless.
I ordered a yellowtail and scallion roll, salmon roll, and spicy tuna, and striped bass sushi. I expected to be waiting a while, the wait time seemed a little exorbitant, but it arrived promptly, in about 30 minutes. When it arrived I was pleasantly surprised to see that the rolls were substantial and the piece of sushi was gigantic. It was easily a large enough piece for two good sized pieces. The fish was fresh and the rolls were wrapped well.
I wasn't a fan of the spicy tuna, it was more tempura filler than fish, but I kinda expected it and decided to risk it anyway, so you know, you live and you learn. My only complaint is that they down include anything to put the soy sauce in, which kinda sucks because I like to the soy sauce ginger and wasabi. Other than that, no complaints and the price was unbeatable–22, not including tip. I'll definitely be ordering from them again!
Excellent food and service!
I really liked this place. It's great for cocktails, sushi, and traditional and modern Asian cuisine, and a great place to take a date.
I had a variety of sushi, sashimi, and nagiri. All were excellent although I did have a bit of a difficult time telling the rolls apart. The menus were not too specific about what the rolls were, though I could have asked.
I would like to come back here and try the hibachi.
Cool, quaint hibachi place… it's like Harlem has a small Benihana site! Fun for groups of friends or family members. The servers need better aim, my dress was sake-d Down but, the food was good!
Went here, February 2016, for a birthday dinner. The food was decent, needed a bit more seasoning because the rice was dry but the overall meal wasn't that bad. The drinks were strong, maybe to distract you from the food. They also offered Hibachi styled dining but we did regular dining. The service wasn't too bad, could've been better but the waitress was friendly. And customization on the menu items were very limited – they are so standardized that one order had a request for no egg in the rice and it came as is anyway.
It took them forever to give the table Soy Sauce for the dry rice and extra napkins. And the food was too hot, I'm not a fan of room temperature food so for me that just kills the experience.
Over the last few months, Nikko has become my go-to place for sushi by Columbia/Morningside Heights.
If you have never walked into Nikko before, just prepare yourself. It's no typical fusion place – it's huge and super flashy! There is a separate section on the left for the bar and hibachi tables. The right side is the huge, darkened moodlit dining room which shares its space with the hot kitchen and sushi bar.
The food? Not bad. I have to admit that I really only come here for/order the sushi. The other stuff… I think it your typical pan-fusion stuff. I tried the grilled squid (not bad) and the wasabi shui mai (which I almost believe are the frozen supermarket kind) and wasn't super impressed.
The sushi, though, is pretty good. The spicy combo is my favorite.. and the rolls are actually spicy. The chirashi is also very good and comes beautifully arranged with thick slices of sashimi.
The plus side for me: a Columbia ID will give you a little discount at certain times of day.
Don't be fooled by the 3 star rating. The food is good AND affordable!
Came here for lunch on a Sunday with a few friends. This restaurant has fairly dim lighting, I guess to set the mood. They also played sad romantic songs. Not what we particularly were hoping for, but I guess it adds to the mood? Please play something happier. I don't know too many people who enjoy going on dates where the mood is set by depressing music.
It was also really really cold, and it wasn't really that warm outside. It was cold enough to order hot water… which half the table did. They looked at us really confused at first, as if we were insane. I promise you we're not crazy, just a little unwell, I know, right now, they can't tell, but if they stayed a while, maybe then they'd see, that we were in fact really really cold.
On to the food. Most of us opted for the lunch special, in which there were like 20 choices, and we could choose 3 of them. It was like 12 dollars! I was expecting small terrible quality food because it was so inexpensive.
Well, first the miso soup came out. It was just better than decent. The issue is it came out lukewarm, and since we were freezing, we were really hoping for HOT soup. We had to wait a while before the entrees came out… seems just a bit slow, but to be fair, there were quite a few of us. To my surprise, the rolls were very well made and tasted delicious.
Service was not noteworthy. There was not that many people, yet it was still a bit slow.
I would definitely come back to this affordable sushi joint and I recommend it. It's great value for sushi to the dollar. However, I would advise bringing a nice warm jacket, just in case they have the A/C at full blast.
Wow the interior is so decorative!
I came here with a group of friends and all tried its lunch special. It is not the cheapest lunch special in this area but I can tell you that it is filling, fast, and clean. All that for about $10. Or $13 after tax/tips.
I highly recommend the Lunch Box option where you get a side salad, some small rolls, main entree, and soup. You could potentially split that into 2 meals! Lunch special runs until 3:30pm, I believe.
For its lunch entree, it is definitely very fusion. They offer Thai, Japanese, and Chinese. I tried the Panang Curry and it was delicious. You could choose your meat option: chicken, beef, and shrimp.
Staff are super friendly and nice. During my visit here, the place was busy but not completely packed. So the staff were pretty attentive. I don't know how crowded this place gets during dinner time though.
If you have an hour lunch break, this place will definitely make you happy. Or if time permits, you could even just relax here with friends and enjoy the decor without rushing your meal here.
They are decent, though over the past year the quality of the brown rice in the rolls seemed to go down a little. Still, overall the sushi is fresh and flavorful. The sweetheart roll is a winner.
