Make a reservation because even at off peak times this place is pretty popular. Good place to bring the kids. Personally I found the ninjas jumping out at me a little annoying.
If you're looking for a unique, kid-friendly, experience in NY this place is cool. If you're looking for the best meal you've ever had, look elsewhere.
We get there and the entrance has black walls and it's dimly lit. A hostess stands waiting to greet you. The elevator opens and she forewarned is that we need to be prepared to fight. Lol. The door closes and the elevator is black as well with one light dimly lit. The door opens and a ninja jumps out of a dark area and I scream. As you walk through there's Ninjas waiting to scare you.. it worked… The food was not that good in my opinion but i did enjoy the Ninja comedian from the BX. While eating dinner Ninjas happen to walk by and reveal swords and say something crazy like YAH.. IDK! I would try it again in the near future.
If you like Crouching tiger this place is for YOU!!! lol.
Gluten Free Soy Sauce
Eh, Oyyy Danielson! This restaurant is a cool place to come for your kids birthday party, or if you have had a lot to drink. As a grown adult this place is not much of a couples pleaser with a lot to be desired after all the TV Shows I've seen it on and heard about. Was a little let down with only 3 tables on a Thursday night alongside the most apathetic waiter with little no to no ninja skills, and I know my ninjas. Also a chic who came by and performed the most dumbest magic trick I've ever seen and then says "tips are welcomed" are you serious bro?
The menu has a cheeseburger on it, that should help you understand the level of quality and direction it's aimed towards, young kids birthday parties. A bunch of adults I would def save your money and head somewhere else with a little more quality of food. The sushi was decent, I got a steak because was hard to find anything gluten free they could make and the steak was fatty and like a basic cut of choice beef. The edamame and what not came out with dry ice on it which made it cool looking and great for photos. Look for the Ninja Star on menu items for the extra "ninja experience". The cocktails had no dry ice which I thought they did, and one had a cool ninja star on it but nothing that I can't buy from a quickie mart and drink and it'd taste the same, not much mixology going on here after I tried 3 different "unique" cocktails and he called it.
I guess I went on a slow night and it proved to be a let down of an experience which I thought would be a HOY HA BAM SCARED YOU kind of place but this night no one gave a crap. Needless to say I crossed off one of the places I've always wanted to go to after seeing it all over TV, the web, etc… next.
The first time I heard about this place (a ninja themed Japanese restaurant) was when I watched a TV show featuring special themed restaurants in the US about 10 years ago. When I was doing a rotation in New York (before I moved here), I took my sister to Ninja, at that time, we felt that the food's average and it's just screaming non-stop in the restaurant as if it's Halloween when ninjas came out from nowhere to scare or "attack" you.
After the host/hostess check you in, you would down 1 floor using an elevator and then walk through a dark passage to get to the dining room. A server dressed as a ninja would greet you and bring you to the table.
I returned to Ninja last Saturday to celebrate a friend's birthday. I was pleasantly surprised by how they changed up the menu and hired more professional ninjas (servers) who would not just focus on scaring customers.
You could order a-la carte or from the course menu that comes with entree and several appetizers. The menu items with a ninja stars next to them would come with a ninja presentation (e.g. special decorators or Ninja act).
We ordered a course (Sarutobi) that's $68 for 2 people, which would come with 3 appetizers and 1 entree. We also ordered an additional NY strip. Food came out really quickly, the appetizers were caprese salad, quiche and mango salmon roll. For the entree, we ordered the rib eye that came with baked potato, broccoli, coleslaw and BBQ sauce on the side.
The smoked salmon and shrimps that came with the caprese salad tasted so fresh. There's a plastic toothpick shaped as a samurai sword that held the tomatoes and mozzarella cheese together for the caprese salad, it's such a cute presentation. The mango salmon roll was so good, it came with raw salmon at the top with drizzle of eel sauce, at the bottom, it's cucumber avocado rice paper wrapped around rice with mango purée and mayonnaise. It's definitely my favorite sushi roll now! My friend and I were not fans of quiche because most of the time, they just tasted cheesy. The quiche dish came with an eye-catching paper dragon with a light bulb in it. The quiche was surprisingly good and there's more bacon than eggs and you could not taste the cheese at all. The crust was also crunchy and good. All 3 appetizers were perfect for sharing.
For the entrees, we had the rib eye steak and NY strip steak, both came with a bourbon ring that the server would light up on fire by your table side. The meat was perfectly cooked; however, it's a little on the dry side, so without the BBQ sauce it was too dry. The sides that came with the steak were broccoli, coleslaw and mashed potato on top of baked potato. They were good.
I specified that it's my friend's birthday when I made the reservation, so when we were done with our entrees, the server approached me in a secretive way and asked if I would want to order dessert for my friend. I ordered the ninja star dessert and asked them to do a birthday presentation. The result was a very surprised friend (they even gave him a ninja headband) and a ninja version birthday song sung by 2 ninjas. As far as the surprise part of ninja star, I will not give you any spoiler here. Definitely get that dessert!!
Before I paid the bill, they sent the in-house magician to our table. The magic show's free, but gratuities are greatly appreciated. He did 3 tricks for us and they were all very cute tricks. The magician even surprised my birthday friend with 1 of the tricks.
Their food and service definitely got better, and I highly recommend this restaurant for a big group's gathering. This place is fun!!! If you want more privacy, please specify you want to sit in the village area when you make a reservation.
i came here for a friend's birthday–very fun and different experience. the ninjas would pop out randomly to try to scare you. at the end, one ninja did a magic trick with the birthday cake which was pretty great.
the food was also pretty good–i had the sushi combo, which gave me a little taste of everything. not the best sushi but it was decently fresh. considering the experience and quality of the food, the price is worth it for at least a one time visit.
I'm not sure if I went on a dull night or what the situation was because there weren't that many surprises when I visited. The prices were really insane, and I remember the food being not so great.
The ninjas didn't do as much scaring or performing as I honestly thought they would. The only thing I really remember liking was that the tables were very secluded and gave a romantic effect. That was probably the best thing about the entire place. Otherwise, the food was kinda boring & bland.
Watch out! This is a dangerous place!
There are dark hall ways and Ninjas looking for you…. You might get scared so make sure you go to the bathroom before you come in. You don't want to pee your pants!
This is a very special dinning experience. I don't want to ruin things for you so I'll just give you some hints…
-you might get scared
-you will be entertained
-this isn't a normal restaurant
-you will want to take pictures
I love different…and this place is unusual. The waiters were all dressed up and the theme is fun. Everything is pretty mysterious and it will be like entering a dark cave. Even though this place might seem scary, it's not. I'm a big scaredy-cat and I had a lot of fun.
If you're ready to celebrate or entertain someone from out of town this place is a great option!
Came here for the first time last year and came back recently on a Thursday night, from the time you get off the dark elevator downstairs there are ninjas making noises and trying to scare you so if you don't like loud noises this may not be the place for you, good thing is while you're eating they don't do those things to you, not to say you won't hear the occasional banging and screaming from other tables, I do like the ambiance of this place it's a little mysterious, the servers are funny and do maintain the whole "ninja" theme pretty well, the cocktails were pretty good and different, the food here can be pricey. My friend and I split an entree named "katana" thats shaped like a sword and for 2 people to have, it's advertised as steak, potato, fried risotto, sauce, cheese and Alaskan king crab, we were disappointed because there was only a little piece of steak and more potato than anything, I guess we expected it to be different, both times I've been here the food was just ok, this is one of the places where you come for the experience first and the food second, it's not bad but I just think the food shouldn't be as expensive, fun spot though
