No 1 Chinese Restaurant

“We love pretty much everything they deliver and BOY oh BOY do they deliver fast!”

“Typical Chinese food delivery based restaurant but what makes them my favorite around the heights is the following: 1) SUPER FAST DELIVERY and 2) their food is fresh, not greasy and flavorful.”

  1. A pre-Sandy dinner was in order. Jin's Superette was too packed for us to run and and pick something out, the deli next was closed, and walking down to Le Chéile was too much damn effort.

Walk in and expect your food to be ready in about 10 minutes. Not too shabby!

The vegetable lo mein was passable, though loaded with mushrooms. (My inner child was going "EW EW EW!" as I picked them all out with a twisted and sour pout on my face.) They forgot to give me my white rice. Adam got the chicken and broccoli. 'Twas also passable. HE got HIS white rice. (Clearly not seething and jealous at the moment…)

I've never been the type to order Chinese. It's convenient, sure, but rarely to I want it or crave it. Still, on an eerily quiet night, questioning if our existence would cease to be due to a monster hurricane, a little bit of MSG coating processed noodles ain't too bad of a deal.

  2. No 1 is probably the number 1 place for Chinese Takeout above 168th but it is relatively mediocre when compared with the other true gems out there.

Yes, they offer lightning fast delivery (even faster than if you were to order in person). They even have a website that enables the lazy locals to order using a credit card (yay, Paypal!… not in person). If it were not for the fast delivery though, No 1 would take backseat when compared with it's nearest competitor: Great Wall (yelp.com/biz/great-wall-…) who also has a website and credit card options and a nicer staff.

The service at No 1 maybe efficient but they are not the nicest…sometimes blowing off a customer to take a phone order or starting an argument with a customer about something benign.

The food is… okay. The General Tso's chicken here doesn't even come close to trumping my favorites places Peking Kitchen and Boulevard Palace (yelp.com/biz/peking-kitc… and yelp.com/biz/boulevard-p…).  Alas, only so much can be expected in the Heights.

  3. Favorite neighborhood Chinese restaurant by far. Crispy wings spicy food and tasty everything!

  4. I only ever order Roast Pork Lo Mein and an egg roll from chinese take out places. However! I saw all these amazing reviews for the General Tso's chicken that I decided to mix it up and go for something out of the norm.

What a mistake. The chicken was clearly of the mystery variety, over breaded and under flavored. It was covered in sauce, yet was oddly flavorless. The broccoli was hard and was just sitting under the chicken, it clearly hadn't been tossed in the sauce.

The only saving grace was the egg roll, which is hard to screw up.

I received a free can of soda with my order, which is nice if I drank soda.

I don't like badmouthing the places in my hood, but I just was totally grossed out by what was supposed to be awesome.

In a positive light, they have received an 'A' from the health inspector.

  5. Up this far, I think this is as good as it gets. If it were all as good as their vegetable steamed dumplings, I'd rate it at 5. Everything else is at 4.

I was skeptical at first, having gone in to simply get a menu one day. The restaurant itself seemed just like every other and the menu looked just like every other. It took me a while to order from them, but when I did, boy was I surprised! For an americanese place, this is really yummy.

I can understand them over the phone, they double check my address, they have never screwed up an order (though I have to remember to mention brown rice, they never ask), and they are usually very quick.

    The best dishes so far:
-Vegetable steamed dumplings wins, hands down. Not just good for up in this area, I love it! The steamed shimp is also good, but the vegetable ones are bigger, better, and cheaper.
-Wonton Soup. I usually get the large, and it is filled with wontons. No skimping here! Veg tofu soup and hot and sour soup are also good, but I prefer the wonton overall.
-sesame chicken and orange beef. Really good stuff. I just ordered the lunch special sesame chicken and couldn't finish it! Wowsers! Sure I've had better, but not in this area.

    The less good experiences:
-The egg drop soup (the only time I had it) was very average and unexceptional. Not bad, but the other soups I've had here seem better.
-The Special Black Bean Sauce pork lunch special should have been called rice, onions, and peppers, with occasional meat and decent sauce. Honestly, this made me want to stop ordering anything other than soup and dumplings from here.

  6. this is one of the best chinese take-outs in new york.
the lady who took the order actually smiled at you and chat with you, which was a nice surprise.
i got szechuan chicken lunch special. hmmm it was flavorful. the rice was really nice. and of course the portion was huge. but it was very good that i had no problem finishing it in one sitting.
