I'm a food blogger, or at least I was. At one time I proclaimed No. 7 the best restaurant in the universe, or at least the neighborhood. When it first opened, No. 7 had an innovative menu that was executed to perfection on a regular basis. Now, it's an interesting spot with disappointing food and a good bar that's usually too crowded. The food isn't anywhere near what it used to be. Take the broccoli tempura, for instance. It used to be the size of a baby with a flaky batter that made you gasp. Now it's the size of a doll's head and tastes almost burnt. It's a bummer.
It's a decent spot and I don't think it's bad, but every time I've gone recently I've felt disappointed because it's nowhere near the height it used to achieve. By itself it's probably 4 stars, I guess. I just can't help but remember how awesome it used to be.
This place seems to be a bit confused about what vibe it's going for. Conveniently located literally RIGHT next to the Lafayette Ave C stop, this restaurant features a substantial bar area where people basically don't talk to each other while they nurse their drinks either on the bar stools or the lounge near the entrance.
The inside seating area opens up underneath a massive sun roof and windows strategically placed at the highest point on the wall before it's basically just ceiling. The decor is typical New American (aka wooden paneling, shades of brown and more brown, and white walls). It's sort of romantic at least when the restaurant isn't packed, but then, once it does become packed, it becomes rather difficult to have a really substantial conversation.
On the plus side, though, the food is really REALLY good. Yelp reviewers suggested the double decker broccoli tacos, and boy, were they a good choice. The black bean hummus was savory, the broccoli was tender, and HELLO can you ever go wrong with tacos? We also had the General Tso's grilled chicken sandwich (that sauce was SPICY and definitely…not General Tso's but it was delicious so, however questionable that name is, redemption exists) and the cheeseburger. Solid solid solid.
We also split a bottle of Verdejo because on Wednesdays, bottles of wine ARE HALF PRICE. Bring a date, order a bottle, and you won't even care that they give you candles for your table before the sun has set while you're sitting directly underneath the sun roof.
The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because I didn't really have time to scope out the place, so I have no idea what it looks like beyond the front bar area.
Came here for cocktails on a Friday night around 9pm. While it was sufficiently crowded, my friends who got there before me had secured a decent amount of space by the front window. Its pretty odd that the storefront is right in front of the stairs to a train station, but makes for good people watching.
Cocktails seemed priced as you would expect, maybe as low as $11. While my drink seemed well prepared it didn't take long to get which was great.
Broccoli tacos.
Broccoli tacos, guys. BROCCOLI. Get your butt over to this cute little place and get yourself some broccoli tacos! These are the tacos you've been dreaming of when you think your drunk ass wants Taco Bell–these are seasoned so well with feta and black bean hummus that you would never know there's no meat. At $10 for two fantastic sized tacos, deal!
Came in for a friend's birthday–a group of us managed to snag several seats at the bar counter, and it was great service, great drinks, and broccoli tacos (can you tell I loved them?). I had a couple of the "When a Problem Comes Along" (also had a really stressful day at work, so this was appropriately named) cocktail, and it was absolutely delicious–if you like grapefruit and vodka, this was perfect. The cocktails were moderately priced, and I can't quite remember the happy hour special, but it was pretty decent. By the end of the happy hour, half a dozen drinks and tacos came out to be around $55.
Ambiance is really cozy, and it's conveniently right outside the Lafayette C stop–a perfect pick for those snowy wintry nights when you don't want to travel too far to get something good to eat. I can't wait to come back here.
I'm not gonna lie. The only reason I came to No. 7 was for one thing: Broccoli Tacos. I saw a post of these unique snacks & I had to give them a try. Photos don't do it justice so don't let them deter you. The Double Decker Broccoli Tacos consists of a soft flour tortilla wrapped around a crunchy taco shell & filled with shredded broccoli florets, feta cheese, black bean hummus, & fried shallots. All the ingredients blended well together & provided an amazing flavor in each bite. Two good portion sized tacos were $10.
They have a beautiful marble-topped bar in the front where you can grab a quick bite & a drink. They have their own cocktails, a good selection of alcohol, & an awesome wine menu. I like a slightly sweet wine so I went for the Lambrusco Reggiano.
No. 7 is a comfortable spot with affordable prices. They have a pre-fixe dinner menu: $25 for Adults & $12 for Children that includes an entree, a side, & dessert so I will be back to check out what else they have to offer.
A friend and I needed a quick bite before heading to a show at BAM (RadioLoveFest!). Another friend of mine who lives in the area recommended No. 7 as a solid pre-BAM dinner-spot. I had thought that No. 7 was a quick bite; however, I was wrong! We arrived at 6:50 and had a show to get to by 7:30. When we told the host, he sat us immediately and our server ensured we ordered right away and basically gave us the check when she gave us our food. We were out of there by 7:20 with plenty of time to walk over to BAM. I really appreciated the service's accommodations to get us in/out. So lesson learned: No. 7 is a nice sit-down place where you should make reservations in advance – especially on a Friday night! (We got lucky because the table was technically reserved, but because we had to leave so quickly, they were able to squeeze us in)
Now, the food! Since we were in a rush, we couldn't order any of the entrees. But, not to fear because the broccoli taco starters were amazing! Seriously, who knew broccoli tacos could have so much flavor. Each of us ordered our own serving (each serving includes two nice-sized tacos) and fries for the table. Yum, yum, yum! So happy we were able to squeeze in this treat before an incredible show at BAM.
Should've written a review last spring bc it would've been better. Boy, have things changed.
Multiple opentable reservations available for a cold Friday evening so I picked 545 which is usual time my co-workers and I free up. Mind you I made the res a week before and for a party of 14 so I out down my credit card. I didn't get a confirmation call (on my cell) until 1230 pm day of but since my cell signal sucks within the hospital, so they had to leave a message. I got the message as we were leaving so I called to say we were on our way. It was 555 pm and the host who picked up the phone insisted it was 6 pm and "reminded" me of our res time. I assured him we'd be there in 5 AND that there were members of the party already there.
When we walked in he was waiting but not anxiously, more like begrudgingly. He simply walked us back and plopped down our menus without a word. This set the mood for the rest of the meal.
A waiter came asking for drink orders and when I said non-alcoholic ginger beer, I was shut down with "it's not." I stuck with water.
It used to be that the amazing broccoli tacos were on the happy hour menu that you could order anywhere in the restaurant. When I asked for the HH menu, he said "the rules have changed." Rules, are we in a classroom?
We got 5 orders of the broccoli tacos and they're just like I remember them but the mood made them a little less enjoyable.
The brussel sprouts were good also. Grilled octopus didn't taste that fresh but the fixings on the plate are tasty. General tso's chicken sandwich is moist and juicy but spicy! I didn't like the fish tacos; the cheese, strawberries, and fish didn't get along. Coconut chocolate bread pudding is grainy and the cookie pieces can be too salty.
4 stars for the broccoli tacos but 2 for the service. The food came out fast and correct, just not happily served. Each time I've been here it's for a work dept get-together, we'll prob pick a diff place from now on.
What a cute place! I love the layout of this restaurant. Huge bar/open kitchen, high-top bar seats, and an awesome room in the back with skylights and cushy seating. We went here for brunch on a Saturday afternoon.
We somehow ended up ordering two vegetarian dishes, the fried broccoli tacos and the poached eggs and hash with Brussels sprouts. The poached eggs and "hash" was more like, potatoes, marinated cucumbers, and sprouts with poached eggs on top. It was quite yummy, though they went a bit overboard on the dill. The broccoli tacos were surprisingly good, and I really liked the textures of the black bean hummus sandwiched between the soft tortilla and the crunchy shell. Not the kind of food I usually order, but if more vegetarian food was like this, I could totally get on board!
The location of our seats gave us a view into the kitchen, and I enjoyed seeing all the dishes coming out, as they all looked pretty good. Side note, the chicken salad looks like an entire head of lettuce was used in there. A salad does not equal a light meal here.
