Solid and authentic. If you like mole this place does it very well in my opinion. I was looking for the americanized or possible California-ized version, though. But maybe you'll love it!
3 and a half stars. The tamales are superb and I love the red mole sauce that comes with their chicken tamale. My husband and I frequently order the tacos and love them. My only complaint and what gives them less than 4 stars is the lack of seasoning in the meat. Frequently, the chicken is bland- especially if not masked by a taco— it's most noticeable in the fajitas and the grilled chicken entree. They really need to work on seasoning the chicken!!!! However, portions are huge. The food is generally tasty and delivery is always prompt and they always cater to special instructions when you order on Seamless. They are definitely worth ordering from for take-out!!!
Bad and slow service. Really good chips. But you only get one for free. Then they'll charge you for the next batch. who does that? If you come as one person you get a batch. If its two ppl you get the same amount and get charged if you want more. Also. ..really really slow. We were the only ones here for a while and it's been about 20 minutes since we ordered.
Seriously, you can't find a better burrito in Manhattan. And trust me, I've looked! Not to mention, for $8.50 you get a fully loaded refried bean burrito (w/ guac, sour cream, the works) and it's better than Chipotle (I *might* give Chipotle a slight edge with the rice, but this is the nice mushy yellow rice, which to me can do no wrong).
I've had take out there and I've eaten there once. I ordered the huevos rancheros for dinner – a rarity here in NYC – but it was so good…I dream of it. It comes on top of the crispy corn tortillas but also you get corn tortillas on the side. My friend ordered one of the specials, which came with nachos and chorizo, and other yummy items. My friend is also a big guy, but he couldn't finish it!
My only gripe is that while they do serve alcohol, it is WAY overpriced, especially for a place in this neighborhood. My gold standard is that during happy hours at Harry's Burritos on 71st St, the margaritas are $3.50 and flavored $4. Here you only have two choices (regular or strawberry) and frozen/rocks of course. But they're small and cost EIGHT DOLLARS. Even Harry's MUCH BETTER margaritas are $5.50 regular price. So…yeah. Won't be ordering alcohol there again.
But don't be discouraged…the food is awesome and amazing and definitely don't miss out.
Good food in the 'hood.
Sometimes, I just crave that "real Mexican" that isn't Tex-Mex: perfectly simmered black beans, yellow flavorful rice, and enchiladas filled with quest blanco, smothered in freshly-sliced white onions and (thankfully) a relatively mild molé sauce. This place provides!
The cheese quesadilla with queso blanco was pretty bangin' too, if I do say so myself. It's got a good flavor and satisfying bite to it, thanks to the cheese being more solid and not so melty and drippy. It worked well.
The sangria…well, a bit too expensive for the amount I got, but tasty with lots of chunks of apple, chunks big enough to joyously stab with a straw so I could eat them. Yes!
It's a very chill, laid back spot with good food, good service, and a good crowd. I def want to go back and try their burritos sometime. The table next to mine ordered one…it was the size of a newborn baby, and I say that with very little hyperbole! (Perhaps just a hair…haha…)
I don't know what I was thinking the night I followed my friends to this spot near campus. Coming from Houston, I know to be wary of Mexican food up north, but months without getting my taco fix had worn me down, I guess. Service was slow and very sporadic. Our food came out barely warm and very bland. I don't know what these other reviewers think is authentic Mexican, but this is definitely not it.
I tried the pollo burrito here. It was alright – huge portion, but still pricey. The flavors were ok; for some reason the chicken tasted greasy but at least it wasn't dry. My friend tried the carne asada torta and it came with french fries. The fries were a little soggy, but he said he liked his torta. It's a really blah kind of place – just merely ok, nothing too special to write about. Which, in turn, makes this review also mediocre. Not bad enough to joke about, not good enough to rave about.
I came in with high expectations, because friends had told me this place is GREAT.
Maybe I got the wrong thing? We ordered chicken/beef fajitas and a chicken quesadilla for the kids. The food was definitely edible, but it was nothing special… pretty bland.
I'd like to come back and try the tamales, since it looks like a lot of people really enjoyed those. Our first visit wasn't very impressive though!
Service was nice and fast.
