Stumbled upon Nolita Wine Merchants while walking around Nolita/Soho last week. This place is super chic and sleek and by far the best looking liquor store I've been to! The selection of wines is equally as superb as the design. Notably, everything I saw was middle range to upper range which spoke highly of the place and their taste! The back wall display was rather nice: an array of bottles handpicked by the staff.
My BF and I walked away with a bottle of Castellare di Castellina Chianti 2013 and Moissenent Bonnard White Burgundy 2013. We had signed up to the mailing list and immediately after, was informed of their cash back program – just email address required. I most certainly will be back!
Amazing selection, incredibly friendly and knowledgeable staff, complimentary tastings on Thursdays and Saturdays and overall an awesome vibe. You can't go wrong with anything in this store, and everyone who works there is happy to help you out.
We came here while we were walking through Soho on a Sunday. They had a wine tasting going on between 4-6 pm and we decided to check it out. This place is really nicely set up. There are wooden racks that hold the wines. The places has a really new wooden smell – although this place has been open for a few years now. The wines are all organized by the various regions that they are grown in, which makes it easy to navigate through the store. The thing that really drew our eye was the back wall which carried all these different colored roses, which really made the shelf pop and make the place look very aesthetically appealing.
There was a wine tasting going on when we walked in. For the tasting, there was a white, a red and a prosecco, all from Italy. The prosecco was really nice and light. The red was called the Odoardi Savuto 2009 – this was really light on the palette for a red especially and it had these subtle floral notes. Typically, I don't like reds because they tend be dry but this has was a nice light, floral red, which really you could pair with any dish that isn't super bold or spicy. The white they had for the tasting was the Ancarani Centesimino – this was very summer white, a great pairing with cold foods.
One of the things that I really liked about this place was the price point of the wines, all the wines that we tasted were in the $20 range. Very reasonable, and there were lot of great options in the $20-$30 range. The person who was conducting the wine tasting was not only very helpful and knowledgeable about the wines, but she was not pretentious, something that really irks me about wine sommeliers.
Overall, I would really recommend trying out this store either for the tasting or if you are looking for a reasonably priced wine if you are in the Soho area.
This is a beautiful wine shop in Nolita – I loved the sleek, uncluttered design. They also have labels that are from smaller importers/distributors and I really appreciate that – to me it shows that they really care about what they stock and that they're not just going for the big, well-known brands that are often over-priced and lower in quality. Wish I lived nearby – it would be my regular shop!
Great service, and knowledgeable staff! They even keep your name on file and record each bottle you purchase if ever you want to buy that particular wine again.
Asthetically simplistic. Utterly chic.
My friend and I were looking for a pairing with some newly bought Brie and crackers. The man at the register gladly and diligently searched for the perfect bottle of white. He asked us our price range and described the best type that would go well with our Brie. "It needs to have body, but not too overpowering"… He told us. "Fruity, but dry enough to compliment." Was the jist of the conversation.
Boy, he was right. What a great pairing for our late night wine and cheese date – will be back again for the next bottle!
