  1. This is one of the best bars in NYC, hands down, because it combines all of my favorite things  – brown liquor and grilled cheese sandwiches, I've been here for all occasions: birthday parties, date nights, solo drinking, etc. and it always works for whatever the occasion. I just found out last night that they actually have an awesome outdoor area so it's fantastic for hanging out in the summertime. Also, they do a happy hour where the grilled cheeses are $5 until 8pm and they will usually have some kind of pickleback deal.

The only issue is that all these factors add up to a dangerous night out. But I suppose I can't take off stars for my own recklessness.

  2. I've been a fan of Noorman's since they opened but I haven't been here in ages and I was pleasantly surprised to see it hadn't changed at all from when I last remember visiting. It has a bit of the dive bar vibe which I totally love but the most comprehensive collection of brown liquors that could rival some of their ritsier competition in the Manhattan. They even had a startling array of Japanese whiskeys (all the rage these days). But for those of us who can't hold our (brown) liquor they also provide beers (classics like Narragansett) and some killer grilled cheese.
    It's a nice neighborhood spot.

  3. I suppose it was only a matter of time, but I lost my pickleback virginity here a few weekends ago.

I was visiting friends for the weekend and we had checked out a few other bars in the area before heading here for drinks and grilled cheese. I liked the vibe of the place, it's very classic and I can imagine it would be great for a casual cocktail with friends or maybe happy hour. Being late on a Saturday night, it was pretty crowded, but we had no trouble getting quick service at the bar. Two of my friends ordered grilled cheese. I had a bite of each–I wish I had gotten my own as both were delicious. Can't really say too much based on those bites, but people seem to live for these sandwiches!

We got a round of picklebacks and I'm not sure how I lived before trying them. I LOVE pickles (too much probably) but I was always a little unsure of this pairing. Well, I was clearly wrong. The combination is wonderful, and apparently the brine is from pickles made locally (or maybe in-house?) which was cool.

I would definitely go back here on my next visit for a late night grilled cheese!

  4. I love Noormans and Jake is PERFECT.
The grilled cheese sandwiches are cool but there's an off menu option called "pickle plate"; it's a grilled cheese on sourdough without the cheese, extra pickles and no bread. I love those pickles.
They also serve alcohols….whiskey and hot toddy's. They do not have pina coladas or frozen margaritas. This is an adult establishment.

  5. Sweet God of the grilled cheeses, I have found you. This place is the heaven of sandwiches, specifically grilled cheeses. I had some kind of Nutella, ricotta, raspberry jam grilled cheese and it blew me away that I can barely describe it. The food is great and the menu has everything you are looking for on it. The service was incredible, despite the bar being packed wall to wall. Even though everyone was ordering, myself and my friend got our food and drinks fast and everything was delicious.

The bartenders know what they are doing and how to make a great drink. They're got a nice selection of beers and whiskey and can recommend a great drink to go with your specific sandwich, some combinations I would've never thought of. But please, do yourself a favor and get food when you go here and make it a grilled cheese. There are several to choose from, but you will be missing out if you don't order food. There is no other grilled cheese you are going to get that is better than here.

  6. Also known as the whiskey and grilled cheese bar.

Sure, this place has over 300 varieties of whiskey and a rustic environment (plus an outdoor patio for when the weather is warm). And yes, they make grilled cheeses so sophisticated they could have a stand in Smorgasbord and make quite a killing.

But I also appreciate how this place makes whiskey approachable. The menus are extensive but well written. And if you're not feeling like making such a such decision, a pickleback + whiskey shot or a whiskey and a select craft beer are always options.

  7. If you've read my reviews, you know
I don't give two f**** going out solo.
I'm my best company. If you can't enjoy your own company, you won't enjoy anybody else's.

This place fits that motto to a T. Came here after being across the street with a former co-worker. It was raining cats and dogs.

Looked at the yelp bookmarks and boom…next spot.

    This place is absolute money.

Cheese sandwiches for $6-7, and artisan at that? Amazing…

    Would absolutely-definitely come back here.

    I'm not giving a description.
You need to haul @$$ here and figure it out for yourself.

    Case closed.

  8. Cool bar in billyburg with an extended whiskey selection and an outdoor patio in the back.

NK is known for their "grilled cheese" selection, but I found it to be pretty shitty.  My friends and I ordered the Vernice, which was mostly bread with a swipe of chocolate on one side and raspberry jam on the other, and the Betsy, also mostly bread, missing the fruit preserves, and so much thyme that it tasted moldy.  If you're drunk and just need bread, do it – but if you're actually looking for a good grilled cheese, take a hard pass.

Patio is nice, but lots of smokers.
