had a family lunch here on presidents day so it was a little quieter and less busy but i'm sure it's a favorite for work lunches during the week.
the service was very attentive but not stuffy which was perfect. We ended up getting the shrimp scampi and the foie gras toast. the shrimp tasted very fresh and was in a very delicious sauce. the foie gras toast had thinly sliced apples underneath so it was a nice balance of flavor.
i got the chicken for one. the chicken was grilled perfectly! i'm always a little hesitant to get chicken since it might be dry. but the chicken was cooked perfectly with all the wonderful juices retained. i was also surprised by the portion size and was actually a little nervous that i might have gotten the chicken for two since i was so stuffed by the end. the chicken also comes with mash potatoes and a salad!
the lamb was cooked well and had a tasty sauce to complement it. the lobster roll was packed with lobster and the roll was toasted and buttery goodness. it comes with duck fat fries which are AMAZING. i now know why it's so popular. So crunchy and it does have a particular taste that comes from the duck fat.
for dessert we got the Apple & Huckleberry Galette, Calvados Ice Cream to share. honestly i didn't know what it was but was pleasantly surprised. it was good and definitely has alcohol reduced in the sauce and went well with the small scoop of ice-cream.
My husband and I were staying at the Conrad Hotel to celebrate our daughter's 21st birthday and prior our arrival I did research on where we should get some good eats! The North End Grill received rave reviews and it is literally next door to the hotel. I made a reservation on Open Table and put in the comments section it was a special occasion. Corey, the manager called me the day of our reservation and told me they would like to ensure our experience was a memorable one so they would have a special cocktail prepared for my daughter. Huh? Whoa! True to form, we arrived and felt like a celebrity. We sat at a beautiful table, right in the middle of the main dining room and were immediately greeted by Corey and our server, Freeman, AND cocktail immediately placed for our daughter! So 5 stars for the VIP treatment, but let's get to the FOOD!
GO for the Porterhouse- at $114 it fed all three of us- cooked to perfection. It was more than enough for 3 big eaters. We opted for "Medium" and it fit everyone's tastes as ends were more done for me while middle was more pink for the husband. Plus- it comes with duck fat fries! They were crispy, fragrant served with aoli! Reminded me of Belgium!
Sides- Cheesy potatoes and sautéed spinach. I repeat, CHEESY, potatoes – and they were served in a humongous bowl. We wanted to lick the bowl clean!
Dessert- go for a pairing – a scrumptious dessert plus a wine, tawny or port is the perfect ending!
OK Wrapping up, this place was the BOMB! My daughter said "best meal she ever had in her entire life!"
Thank you North End Grill, Corey, Freeman and compliments to the kitchen and staff.

Danny Meyer is best known for his growing Shake Shack empire, but there are other restaurants in the city that have drawn countless diners and won accolades for a long time like The Modern at the Museum of Modern Art or the Gramercy Tavern. Among the portfolio of Mr. Meyer's restaurants, North End Grill has long eluded me, largely because of its location all the way down in Battery Park City. I've been hearing, though, that the kitchen under chef Eric Korsh (whose now shuttered restaurant Calliope in East Village that I adored) has been putting together some very good, French-leaning dishes. I've finally made a trip to Battery Park City on a recent night, and had a lot of like with dishes coming from the kitchen.
A meal at North End Grill should begin with one of the charcuterie options. My dining companion and I tried both country pate with house mustard and trotter torchon with parsley salad, both nicely prepared dishes that would make for a good start to the meal before getting to larger options. Duck egg on top of parmesan and English peas was a beautifully plated dish that was another winner; combined with black truffle on top, it had very elegant balance of flavor that I loved a lot. The main dishes didn't disappoint either. Pan roasted hake with was expertly cooked and worked quite well with the wood fired chilies and scallions that accompanied it. The massive Berkshire tomahawk pork chop, accompanied by grilled muscat grapes, potato aligot and green salad, was a thing of beauty, a massive heap of tender pork meat that, despite our best efforts, wasn't thinning down. It was one of the better pork chops I've had in recent years, with the smoky meat that wasn't overly salty in seasoning to my liking to empower the texture of the meat. For dessert, my dining companion pushed for sticky toffee pudding, candied pecans and ginger ice cream, which turned out to be a fine selection, which crunchy pecans working quite well with toffee pudding and ginger ice cream together for delightful end to the meal.
Getting a reservation at North End Grill doesn't seem too difficult, and the dining space wasn't quite full on a Friday night. I assume this is really because of the location of the restaurant that probably draws more crowds from the Wall Street community during lunch and more family groups living in the emerging Battery Park City neighborhood during weekends. There is a full bar with large wine selections from all over the world to choose from. As with all Danny Meyer restaurants, North End Grill has eliminated all tipping, and your bill reflects the service charge (hence the food looks generally more expensive). North End Grill's vibe is somewhat peculiar, at that border between casual neighborhood restaurant and fine dining establishment, with a diverse mix of crowds. Still, there is no question this restaurant is a gem among Danny Meyer's restaurants, and deserves more recognition.
My last night in New York started with a glass of champagne for $16 at North End Grill. I wasn't going to eat the fabulous looking bread, but when they offered me a plate of a delicate salmon rillette, I had to spread it on something:)
Crisp radishes with coarse salt and an anchovy sauce also arrived before my order of grilled sardines for $16, so fresh and artfully done that I wished I had more room to try another dish.
Sitting at the open kitchen counter was entertaining and service was impeccable. I only had a small taste here but I would go back for more without any hesitation!
Went for lunch on a weekday and thought that the food was overall good but biggest drawbacks is that they are very pricey and cater to corporate card holders for business lunches. The service was wonderful, friendly, and accommodating. It does lack ambiance but I assume people are there to discuss business rather than to really enjoy a lunch or dinner out. It suited it's purposes but I probably wouldn't go back on my own.
I ordered the grilled local trout with lentils and bacon. The trout was filet'd and grilled very well. The seasoning was on point. The lentils were dispersed on top with four chunks of bacon. I enjoyed the dish but it was on the very small and light side. I also ordered the blistered shishito peppers which were a nice accompaniment to lack of sides for the fish.
Overall, it's not my scene if I were to dine off from work.
"Expensive, upscale casual but excellently executed food" would best describe this lively restaurant.
I think service was on point but not super welcoming or as fast but maybe that's just being a lone diner on a busy night — just had higher expectations of a Danny Meyer restaurant.
Still they were nice and gave a toasted bread with some sort of fish spread which was not expected.
I'd skip the artichoke. It was nicely grilled but for ~$16 definitely not worth it. I think it was only half an artichoke or it was pretty small and the aioli wasn't anything special.
The octopus salad came out nice — definitely a different take on octopus than I ever saw. The octopus was very tender and the beans had a nice crunch coupled with the peanuts.
The squab was the star. It was perfectly cooked so it was very tender and not at all tough. The sauerkraut-like accompaniment was a nice complement too. Overall found the dish very flavorful.
Sitting right at the chef table bar overlooking the kitchen gives you a front row seat where you can see the amazing wood grill and the cooks at work.
I wouldn't mind going back but I wouldn't go out my way to come. It's not cheap or a terrific value but I'd say you are fairly getting what you pay for here.
I've been back to North End Grill multiple times for dinner and recently had brunch for the first time. Evening service is still impeccable and the food is high quality and tasty. I'm amazed at how reasonable the audio level is considering how crowded the dining room is. Brunch is a more low-key affair, although that's perhaps due to my lack of awareness that no booze is served before noon. The crispy potatoes are fab.
Ah, the Maine Lobster Roll, Duck Fat Fries. It was an enjoyable lunch in a place not too loud as to have a nice business lunch where we could hear each other talk. With my usual park and walk to the place where my business is that takes me to this area I have only noticed the Shake Shack and really did not think there was much else in the area.
When, however, I needed to find a meeting place outside of my first destination's offices I see there is a whole world of opportunity in this little area off the west side highway. The North End Grill was not only enjoyable food but also an enjoyable experience with great service, in a large and roomy location, with a good overall atmosphere.
Oh, and did I mention they are OpenTable friendly — that is a big bonus for making plans that stick to a tight schedule.
