This place is expensive for no reason. OK, yes they have alcoholic drinks but I'm referring to the food. Expensive Chinese food, not worth it. Flavor was OK not anything spectacular. I wont be returning…I'll be at the original Jardin de China on Junction or at Golden(something) on 82nd Street.
The last few times I went there were good experiences. This last time, not so much.
I ordered what I usually do – grilled steak with mixed fried rice and maduros. The portion was huge as always, but the chef forgot to season the food at all. The fried rice was super burnt.
Love the bread basket and wonton noodles as always though!
Their boneless fried chicken is to die for. It's crispy on the outside and seasoned on the inside, just the way my inner Southern girl likes it (even though this is not a Southern restaurant, of course). I got it with fries (which were mediocre) and yellow rice (good). You can also choose to get it with a salad and fried plantains. I also loved their warm and yummy bread basket and their fried wonton noodles with duck sauce. YUM!
I never thought I'd say this, but their portions are TOO large. It was hard for me to eat even half the plate I got. Unless you're in hangover mode or are ridiculously good at wolfing stuff down, I'd recommend sharing a dish with someone else.
As for the service, they were quick and attentive. They accommodated our huge group (about 10-15 people) for a birthday celebration with no problem. The place is quite nice and cozy, perfect for family dinners.
Also, the Asian waiters speak Spanish, say what? Now that's true fusion.
Good Cuban food in Astoria.
Chicharon de pollo and fried porkchops is a must to order.
The portions are big. I asked for garlic and Tabasco sauce to mix with vinegar as my sauce.
The plata is are good as well. I like sweet plantains.
Mmmm… cuban chinese food!
My husband and I have dined here a number of times. He likes the squid fried rice and their steak. They have the best chilean sea bass I have ever had!! So good!
The waiters are friendly and give good service.
It is a little bit more pricey for Chinese food, but their food is really tasty.
The oxtail wasn't as flavorful as I remembered. The squid ink rice was a bit bland. The hits were the grilled shrimp, the black bean oysters. The lobster didn't taste quite fresh. And the barkeep needs to know mojitos need crushed mint, not chopped. I liked the sweet plantains. They changed the flan which was topped with an orangy syrup. I skipped tasting this because of the food coloring although others said the flan was yummy. I wouldn't write this restaurant off since I've had great food in the past.
My go to when in the hood … amazing! And the lunch specials are a win. Been coming before the neighborhood got gentrified, and they renovated and their prices went up. Will still keep supporting.
Prices have definitely gone up in the recent years. Hubby, our toddler and I stopped by on a Saturday afternoon and had lunch. I normally just order chow fun from my local Chinese delivery spot so I had a couple questions about what veggies were mixed in…somewhere a lack of communication occurred and the waiter thought I wanted an extra side order of vegetables…I didn't, but couldn't even imagine trying to explain that to him when a simple question turned into an extra order so we ended up just paying for it and taking it home. The chow fun was really yummy, and hubbys lemon chicken breast platter was tasty – but at over $17 a plate we will think twice about stopping by again.
