First time here was 3 months ago in mid-December. I have probably been back 4 times a month since then. Guess I am qualified to write a review now.
What brings me back are the sweet potato waffle fries during Happy Hour. $6. The Happy Hour also includes $2 domestics and $4 imports/cocktails.
Domestic does not mean from America…it means Budlight, Coors Light, Miller Light, etc.
Gimme a Useful vote 😉
Recently we switched it up and got the Nachos and Chili and that too was amazing…and I don't even like cheese.
Sometimes though, the waffle fry amount is very low, while other times they give you an ample amount.
That is aggravating.
The bartenders are cool, sociable. They crack jokes, etc.
In the back is a pool table and room for beer pong.
Crowd is very mixed…older, younger, biker, hip hop, Hoboken yuppies, etc…every stereotype is in here, not just one!
The music they play ALWAYS makes you want to sing by the way….so be careful.
Blast in a glass! Friendly people and inexpensive drinks, what more can you ask for?
As an alternative to eating at the airport, I took to Yelp for inspiration in finding a "local" joint where I can kill some time before my flight home. Although the area seems sketchy, I urge you to go here, if for nothing more, than the conversation and the history.
It was about 3pm on a rainy Tuesday when I wandered in. Usually, an empty place would be a warning sign to run in the other direction, but something inside me was convinced to trust my gut (and my fellow Yelpers) into sticking around. And man, I'm so glad I did!
Pat is fkn hilarious, not to mention the epitome of what a bartender should be. He was quick-witted, knowledgeable about current events, humble, informative, and just an all-around nice guy. As I sat down, he told me the daily specials, and I settled on the skirt steak meal. My oh my, totally not what I expected…the steak was tender and juicy, and generously portioned!
I loved the fact that this is a "cop bar" with all the different badges adorning the bar area. With all the shit going on in the news, it's so refreshing to see an establishment that celebrates the courage and bravery of our men and women in blue.
Because of the nostalgia, the proximity to EWR, AND most importantly Pat, I can't wait to come back during my next stay in NJ!
OK! Now I will say this once and once only – If you are in the Elizabeth NJ area and in the mood for a BURGER not a burger – but a BURGER yes with CAPS – Then this is your place.
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas………… Burgers are sooooooooooo good – Any you have various options of Burgers that you can have…. Not only that – you have all kinds of beers available – I don't drink beers – but I am just saying – LOL!
The best thing that I forgot to mention – it is AFFORDABLE – you can have a great big juicy burger for under $10 and it comes with fries or a side salad – I mean what more do we want in life – LOL! LOL! LOL! LOL! LOL! LOL!
Let me not forget the Nugents sauce – Oh yeah baby – get the nugent sauce with your burger………..
I'm into the dive bar thing and this place is good for drinks, definitely is old and has nostalgia, and is frequented by the locals and cops. The bartender was nice, but we arrived just before 6 pm, and there was a shift change (in the kitchen and bar) after our order was taken, so we got our stuffed jalepenos (great) and salad (not as great), and then they forgot about our burger and fish & chips for almost an hour (even though we politely reminded them), while others came, ate, and left. Once the burger and fish & chips arrived… the burger was just ok, and the fish and chips was below par. The fries were undercooked. They "comped" us with an extra round of JD fireballs, but it didn't make up for the long wait and average food. I would DEFINITELY go back for drinks and bar appetizers (but not the fries). I can see this place being better on a different visit, but the circumstances of the first visit made it average overall.
Nugent's is a real gem and we will definitely be back when in the area! Wasn't so sure when we parked nearby and started walking up – it looked a little dicey and I almost wanted to turn around, but looks were deceiving! What a great relaxing locals bar! This is a very, very friendly welcoming place. Service by Pat behind the bar was perfect. A good number of awesome beers on tap, lots more in bottles and a full bar. OK, so you're thinking – should I really order food in a place like this? The answer is YES!! Great menu with a lot of variety. We started with fried calamari – seriously, perhaps the best I've ever had. My wife had the Reuben and I went with the Plain Jane burger with onion rings. Both were seriously among the best we've ever had! Now for the best part – 4 beers, fried calamari, Reuben and burger – $40. No kidding, $40.
