  1. The dishes were either a hit or miss, no in between; however, their service is very lacking and inattentive. We received our drinks approximately 15 minutes after we asked for them. We sat at two separate tables and they brought the food out at inconsistent times (meaning one table would be eating, while the other just watched because they didn't bring out the food at the same time). This should not have happened, seeing as we ordered the same dishes for each table; we ordered two of everything. Therefore, the kitchen should have made them two at a time.

I went with a group of 16 other people and the food arrived in a timely manner. We ordered Roti Canai as an appetizer and it was perfectly crisp and warm. The curry chicken dipping sauce was nicely balanced and the spice level was just right. As entrees, we ordered the fried pearl noodles, hokkien char mee, pad Thai, hainanese chicken, Chinese watercress with preserved bean curd, shrimps with lady fingers Malaysian style, jumbo prawns in special sauce, and sarang burong.

The fried pearl noodles were cooked al dente and the sauce complimented it very well. The seafood in it was not overcooked. It was my favorite dish of the meal. The hokkien char mee could have used a little more salt, but overall, it was delicious. The Pad Thai is different than any other I've had. There was way too much heat and the sauce just tasted like ketchup. Pad Thai is supposed to tossed in a tamarind-based sauce. I highly doubt tamarind was present in the Pad Thai. Additionally, there were only a few shrimp in it (less than any other I've had). The hainanese chicken was somewhat dry and was served on top of soy sauce. Since the chicken is steamed, it needs to be rested before being cut to maintain all the juices. However, they didn't let the chicken rest long enough before slicing it, so the excess water from the chicken watered down the soy sauce, leaving the chicken dry and the sauce flavorless. So we used the leftover curry sauce that came with the Roti as a dipping vessel to moisten the chicken.

The Chinese watercress with preserved bean curd was mediocre. It had a weird salt component to it and needed to be elevated in flavor. The shrimps with lady fingers Malaysian style is just a fancy name for okra with shrimp. The okra was overcooked and lacked a crunch. The jumbo prawns with special sauce was simply a waste of money. The "special sauce" left much to be desired. The sarang burong was pretty good. The dish itself was served in a fried taro, which was still crunchy. The shrimp and chicken with veggies was tasty. However, the cashew nuts didn't really add to the dish.

Overall, the service needs to be stepped up tenfold.

  2. Came here for a takeout order around 6pm on a Sunday
-man at the counter was helpful with ordering
-total fulfillment time was ~10 minutes
    -restaurant looked relatively clean
-ordered the (i) curry beef stew: beef was very tender and spicy level was 6 out of 10, with 10 being spiciest, (ii) sarang burong: fried taro was very good, (iii) chow kueh teow noodles: this was only okay
-note: thought the size of dishes was on the smaller side

  3. Honestly, even with the reviews stating the rude behavior and lack of service, this place is always packed. We came for a family birthday dinner on a Wednesday night. We had reservations but when we arrived it was mostly empty. By the time the whole party arrived, the place was almost full. The prices were decent, but the dishes were small and I wouldn't suggest family style because of that. However, if each person ordered their own dish it would have been sufficient. We decided to go family style which was a mistake. But at the end we were fairly content with the meal. The service, on the other hand, was horrible. It took forever to flag down waitresses. Although to be fair, they were spread too thin. It is the management's fault; they should hire more staff. I wouldn't return willingly unless I am really craving some Malaysian food or if my family insists on going.

  4. cash only

the food is always good.  the service is ok.  i always feel so rushed when i come here though.  they're always busy so i get they want to get you out and get in new customers but that's not my fav.  i put up with it cause i do like the food.  just about everything on the menu is bomb so you cant go wrong with whatever you order

  5. This restaurant has some excellent dishes and others not so excellent. My favorite is Beef Rendang.  The sauce is rich and delicious. Also like like Roti Canai.   Any seafood dish tends to be very fishy.

  6. More of a 3.5 star experience.

Consistently a solid meal. I've been coming to the Nyonya/Penang restaurant group since I was little … way before this location opened up in Bensonhurst. Back in the day, we'd go to the one on 8th Ave frequently and were ecstatic when this location opened up walking distance from home. The lady who would manage the 8th Ave location is now permanently stationed here to ensure quality does not waver.

    Our typical spread:

    1. Appetizer: Baby Oyster Omelette (a welcome change from the typical Roti Canai you see everyone else ordering)
    2. Kang Kung Balacan- green veggies in a special malaysian paste/sauce. A must for the table to share if you're going for a true malaysian meal.
    3. Bak Kut Teh- pork herbal soup. I think I make this better at home but on a cold day when you're feeling under the weather- this will energize you. Hence, this is typically a breakfast soup in Malaysia but here in the US it doesn't seem to matter as much. Warning- its got a strong garlic flavor but good for the soul.
    4. Hainanese Chicken- classic dish, can't mess this one up. Its best to pair this with chicken broth rice instead of regular white rice.
    5. Asam Laksa- individual. Its a noodle soup with a heavy fishy aroma but if you can get past it, its a really savory dish and typically done well.
    6. Prawn Mee Soup- also more of an individual dish as well as a noodle soup- be sure to request it with EGG AND RICE NOODLE. YES BOTH. IN THE SAME BOWL. That's the classic Penang way of doing it. So do it right! lol it makes a big difference in terms of texture/taste of the dish.
    7. Beef Rendang- super oily. I'd pass on this but only because I prefer making this at home. Its definitely worth a try if you're new to Malaysian cuisine.
    8. Assam Ikan Bilis- we LOVE ikan bilis aka anchovies. If you like anchovies too then this would be your dish of choice (to share)… also consider ordering the Nasi Lemak if you're looking for a solo dish.
    9. DESSERT: PULUT HITAM!! coconut milk with sticky purple rice. My favvvvvv!
    10. Beverages: Malaysian iced coffee/iced tea is much stronger and aromatic. Im a fan.

The wait: typically long on weekends, especially holiday weekends. My family eats late so we prefer going around 8:30-9p for no wait and better service 🙂

  7. This place is just NOT a good place for Malaysian food. Service here definitely brings the place down BY FAR, and the food is always below average. Since this is the only Malay place in Bensonhurst, my family and I get tempted to come here for some motherland cooking but it always disappoints. In addition, they ALWAYS get my order wrong. I'm a vegetarian but have gotten dishes with meat bits… It's happened so many times I just gave up on this place. This restaurant either needs new management or just needs to GO.

  8. Not the best food here but I sometimes find myself coming back. Maybe it's because of how good the roti canai or hainan chicken with rice used to be, that I keep thinking it would be like that again. But nope, it's no longer… The roti canai is quite expensive for a small thin piece of dough and some curry sauce (if you're lucky you will get a piece of chicken or potato in there). Not the cleanest place either. Maybe people who has never been here before would like it since they wouldn't have a "before" to compare with the "now".
