YASSSSSSSSS QUEEEEEEENNSSSS! I love when I hit the jackpot with Mexican eats. Oaxaca is sooo yummy! I stopped by for lunch last week with two of my friends. The location is small (which is why i docked a star from their overall rating) but man oh man, this food was official. I had the chicken quesadilla. It was like heaven in my mouth. So tasty, so fresh, so..everythang. Would totally recommend for lunch! Their guac is also equally tasty as everything else.
Definitely in the mood for some cheap Mexican eats after grabbing some beers on a Friday night so stopped by this taqueria over some of my old standbys. Small place with some bar seating, but they do BYOB, which is nice while I waited for food (had a 6-pack in hand).
For takeout: Carnitas Enchilada, Pollo Guisado Torta, and the Three-Taco Combo (Chorizo, Al Pastor, and Ceviche) – $27 total. Had the enchilada first: a decent starter, though couldn't taste much of the pork shoulder. Tacos were next: the soft tortillas they used were very stale, so I ate the filling with a fork instead. I also felt the chorizo was too sweet (had to add a lot of hot sauce). Torta was last: large sandwich, didn't like the bun all too much but needed to get the disappointing taco taste out of my mouth.
Maybe I came during a time where the ingredients weren't quite fresh – just didn't enjoy my meal. With the other high quality options in the area I probably won't try this place again.
I haven't had much luck finding good mexican food in NYC. I grew up in a mexican-heavy part of the country, so I'm just not that impressed by NYC mexican most of the time. This place is pretty good though.
It's really a 3.5 star place, but I'm rounding up to 4 because the value is good and because of the relative lack of good mexican in the city. The tacos are the star of the show here. You could order something else, but why would you? The tacos are not overly complicated, just good, simple, flavorful food.
I walked past this place and I thought it looked really cool – an authentic Oaxacan taco join with a small bar where you can belly up.
When I came in I realized: 1) the counter was just a place to sit while you order takeout (it's mostly a takeout joint), and 2) there's noting really Oaxacan about it, it's just a name to denote that it serves tacos.
Having said all of that … I ended up sitting at the bar and chatting with the takeout guys, and the tacos were very good. The New York Times review said that the Carnitas and the Shrimp tacos were something superlative, and I will say I was quite pleased.
I live a block away from this gem and never knew about it. I regret all the times I went to Chipotle (which is diagonally across the street from this place)… This place has really good burritos. Haven't tried anything else from here yet but the carnitas burrito is where it's at…
