I'm glad I came here because 1) not only do I not eat meat, but 2) I am allergic to shellfish. For some time my friends in the neighborhood had thi splace on their list of new restaurants to try, so after some rescheduling, we agreed to come here on a Monday evening after work.
When we collectively decided to not don plastic gloves for the evening, I was pretty glad because of reason number 2 listed above. I ordered the fried oyster basket (which came with cajun fries), steamed veggies, and we shared some calamari.
Fried oysters were pretty decent for a good price, the cajun fries satisfied my craving for cajun fries, and the steamed veggies were sufficient and yummy enough to make me feel as if I got enough out of that part of the food pyramid.
The vibe of Oceanic Boil is very friendly and mixed: there were families, dates, and groups of friends (like us), and service was also just as friendly. Very happy that this place is in the neighborhood!
I've been holding out a few weeks to try this place, sadly, it was a bit of a let down. But I don't want to be a downer so early in the review so let's go into the positive aspects of the place — I love the decor and the attention to detail they placed into this restaurant. Staff was very friendly and attentive. However, the snow crab leg ($15 for 1lb) was a bit of a let down. Portions are smaller than the usual boil places and maybe it was just this order I got, but the snow crab legs where brownish-grey tint on top. I was thinking it was the sauce and heat break down to give it that color but the person (chef) I was eating with suggested the snow crab leg has been in the fridge longer than it's shelf life. I really wanted this place to my go-to summer spot in the neighborhood! *sad panda face*
Summary: (-) Not so fresh snow crab leg (+) Attentive and friendly staff. I'll stop by again to try their dungeness crab, shrimp, and the green tea flan. Hopefully it'll be better the 2nd time around. I'll do an update review on my 2nd visit.
Bingo! Score! Slam dunk! Pow!! In the neighborhood, great price, no wait, great staff, great selection, flavor is perfect! Messy yes but they provide plastic gloves and aprons. So roll up your sleeves, dress casual, pull tour hair back, have an empty stomach and enjoy every single bite!!! What should you have? Well the other person who joined me, they selected oldbay rub and I selected butter & garlic. So you can go with any level of flavor. Someone in the yelp reviewd mentioned no taste… I don't know how?! I have had great Lobstee in Long Island, Boston, Maryland and this was up there. JacksonHeights just acquired a great seafood spot. Stop on bye! Enjoyyyy
I was super excited that something like this opened up in the neighborhood but it is so disappointing. If this place doesn't change their food they will not last. The food is tasteless. It is missing salt in everything! Also there is no spice at all. How can this place be cajun/creole? First off cajun food doesn't even use old bay. Even the fries weren't good. I won't be going back here until they change the food.
As for the service they were good an attentive but it could have been because there was only 1 other table other then mine. The decor is cute but too dark inside.
Friends and I showed up on a Friday night at around 8pm. There was no wait (YAY!).
I ordered their lobster with shrimp and a dozen clams. They were nice enough to let me mix the lobster with clams and take the pound of shrimp to go. The Oceanic boil sauce was flavorful. It says spicy but really it's a small kick to enhance flavors.
Dessert! Say yes to the flans!!! Smooth and creamy. Yum@
The staff was attentive and made sure we had enough napkins and new gloves. I really liked their play list… like indie edm or whatever the new kids are listening to these days.
New local business that just opened 5 days ago right across from our residence! Been waiting for this place to open for a while now, so glad it did.
The ratings are for the customer service and interaction we received today from the owners and staff. Starting with the staff, very welcoming, friendly and attentive. The owners also came over to check on us and see how we were enjoying things. Being that I'm from LA, I told him my experience about the Boiling Crab and the Boil in NY, making some suggestions and recommendations to him about their menu items, sauce etc. I loved that he was super open to suggestions and recommendations and actually listening to what I had to say. Definitely helps knowing they value their customers opinions.
Coming to the food…we had the fried calamari for appetizer which was great! Just recommend making it slightly bigger in portion and perhaps charging more to go accordingly. My husband and I then shared the Dungeness Crab and 1lb of Shrimp with the house special sauce. The sauce was interesting and definitely different from the boil or boiling crab…but we enjoyed it! I feel the shrimp portion was slight less compared to other places so highly recommend more shrimp for the price. As for the Dungeness Crab, I'd probably recommend the snow crab legs over it just due to preference.
Overall, I definitely recommend trying this place out and supporting the business due to reasons listed above. I hope my recommendations are considered to give this place higher ratings the second time around!
I am a big fan of Cajun/Creole style boiled seafood. After hearing the new Oceanic Boil opening in Queens area, we decided to check it out on a Friday evening.
Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted by their friendly staff and seated immediately. Surprisingly, the restaurant was 3/4 empty on 6:30PM Friday evening. The menu is simple and straight forward. First, you order the types of seafood (Shrimp, Clam, Crab, and etc), then the seasoning (Garlic butter, lemon pepper, old bay spicy or the whole shabang spicy).
We ordered the following:
Catfish basket with Cajun fries. The fried catfish was really good. It was well-seasoned and perfectly cooked. The texture of the fish was still tender and juicy.
12 pieces of Boiled Clams with the whole shabang spicy seasoning. The clams were huge with shells between 2 to 2 1/2 inch diameter; they were thick, fresh and juicy.
1 lb of Shrimp with the whole shabang spicy seasoning. The shrimp were medium size with heads on. Unfortunately, some were not that fresh. The texture were mushy and chalky with the shell stuck on the body and hard to peel.
Also, I find the whole shabang spicy seasoning sauce was a bit lacking. I would have loved a bolder flavor of the Cajun seasoning mix with lots of garlic chunks. By the way, their spicy was not really spicy.
Overall, my experience here was neither positive nor negative. There's definitely room for improvement.
